Editor’s welcomeWe made a wish, and it came true…Trend is officially two!

Each and every one of us who’ve beeninvolved since the inception of thisexciting project covets it like a baby.

MD Gill Buyers had the vision, and therest of the team – from design, to sales, events, distribution, finance/administration, print, photography, styleand editorial - have been privileged tohelp make it happen. (Have we had tomanage the tantrums that custodians ofa two-year-old are led to expect? Now,that would be telling…!)

Since our launch in October 2007, wehave boosted our pages from 56 to 76 –

and our circulation from 5,000 to anamazing 17,000.

From day one, it’s been tremendous fun. We’re all now proud to be moving intoyear three, and to be taking ourcherished readers, advertisers andsupporters with us.

Our 2nd birthday fireworks displaycomes in the form of some of our mostsparkling competitions ever – win fourdays in New York, an overnight stay in aPerthshire retreat, luscious lingerie, chicJuicy Couture watches, a day at the NickNairn Cookery School, and a consultationwith a TV garden designer.

In keeping with the birthday theme, our

food and wine critic samples what’smuch more palatable than squashedtomato and stew (from page 26), whilereporter Alison endeavours to look 10years younger on page 10.

Thanks for reading. See you inDecember/January.

Best wishes,Niki TennantEditor

Trend’s reporter Alison Daniels and Fashion Photographer

I would...?’ here are their answers:

“...make the world a better place. I’d selflessly go to meetings and slappeople on the back of the head whenever they spout meaninglessbusiness jargon. When my hand got too sore, I'd move on to stagingparanormal events and religious miracles round the city for my ownamusement. BEAUTY FEATURE

10

I have an appallingly low maintenance approach to the wayI look. If I’m honest, I don’t even own a comb, and my beautyroutine most days consists of sunscreen. My face is a bit like apotato that’s been left in a shed all winter in a high gravityenvironment. On the rare occasions I wear makeup, you’dthink it had been applied in a power cut duringan earthquake.

So I put myself in Beauty Uncovered’s friendly and expert hands.

After a consultation, the girls designed a custom programmeto rejuvenate my skin. They suggested a combination ofDiamond Tome micro dermabrasion, Omilux light sessionsand CACI non surgical facelift treatments.

Diamond Tome uses tiny diamond chips to slough off deadskin cells and reveal fresh skin. Omnilux uses light of differentwavelengths to promote the production of collagen andelastin, plumping the skin and the CACI treatments use faradiccurrents to stimulate the facial muscles to turn back the clock. Each day, I used a range of Priori products with high levels ofanti-oxidants.

The salon also offers a widerange of facials, peels, massages, Ioniethermie inchloss, aromatherapy, waxing, tinting, spray-tanning, manicures, pedicures and Ellipse lasertreatments to ensure you lookyour best from top to toe.

After a month, my skin is springierand more resilient, the overall tone isimproved. It feels smoother and glowswith health. It’s also pinker and warmerand my jawline is firmer. My eyes lookbetter since individual lash extensionswere painstakingly applied.

So did it work?Well, that’s for you to judge. I’m forty four. If that looks like agood number to you, then here’s another you’ll like even better.Phone 01224 869882 for an appointment and tell them I sent you.

However sometimes nature needs a littlehelp. Temple Aesthetics uses effectiveand proven treatments to restorevolume, soften deep wrinkles and lines, and rejuvenate skin. Blemishes, unevenskin pigmentation, fine wrinkles and linescan all be treated without injections.

Dr Sam Robson, a qualified GP, offers afree consultation where she can assessyour skin. Following discussion withcolleague Astrid, a beauty therapist with25 years experience, they will advisewhich treatment will help achieve thebest results.

Smooth Opera torsIt is common knowledge that healthy skin results from drinking plentyof water, avoiding excess sun, not smoking and a healthy diet.

“Tired skin can be refreshed, with the damaged outer layers removed. Underlying new skin will be stimulated and a youthfulappearance and texture revealed with smaller pores and brighter, softer, smoother skin exposed,” explained Sam.

Techniques include microdermabrasion, chemical peels and dermaroller, the favouredtreatment of celebrities before a red carpet event.

We’re offering one very lucky reader the chance to turn back the clock courtesy of SAKS, Aberdeen’s premier hair and beauty destination.

The new CACI Ultra Anti-Aging Facial uses a combination of micro-currents, ultrasound, high-frequency vibration and diode photo stimulation to take years off your appearance. Essentially, the skin is refreshed, re-educated and rejuvenated using one of a choice of seventy different programmes, meaning each client gets a treatment regime designed to meet their individual skin’s needs.

The CACI Ultra Anti-Aging Facial starts off with a relaxing cleansing and toning of the skin, followed by a gentle strawberry-scented fruit acid peel. Then the muscles of theface, cheeks, chin, forehead and eyes are treated to almost imperceptible stimulation and a rejuvenating serum. A special attachment is used to boost collagen production, improving the appearance of deeper wrinkles. Then the skin is treated with red light to promote healing and a blue light which helps improve the texture of pores, reduce oiliness and improve the skin. A special vibrating plate helps boost circulation and boosts sallow skin. This is followed by an intense moisture boost.

CACI isn’t just for the girls either. An increasing number of men find that the CACI Ultra system leaves them with firmer, more toned facial skin.

SAKS are offering one lucky Trend reader a course of ten CACI Ultra Anti Aging Facial treatments worth £550. To enter please answer this question: Where are the two Saks Salons located in Aberdeen?Email your answer with Saks in the subject box include your name, address, andtelephone numbers and tell us where you picked up your copy of Trend.

RESTAURANT REVIEWS

27

I’m always drawn to the harbour side atStonehaven, (it reminds me of time spentliving on Guernsey), and I’ve been anoccasional visitor to the Marine Hotel for aslong as I’ve been in Aberdeen. This was myfirst visit since the refurbishment and I barelyrecognised the upstairs restaurant. Mutedtones and dark wood set the scene, andthere are glorious views over the harbour. We watched hopeful seagulls surround afishing boat. A flotilla of ducks swam backand forth whilst children splashed about inthe sea.

As well as the wine list, there is animpressive menu of both Scottish andinternational beers by the bottle and ondraught. From the pump, I chose aHoegaarden wheat beer. I’m happy toexperiment with my beer and food matching, and this is the place to do it as The Marine

Hotel was voted the CAMRA Scottish Pub ofthe year 2008/2009.

All my good lunch time intentions of asalad or soup and sandwich went out ofthe window.

The imaginative menu changes withthe seasons.

I began with a filo basket filled with smokedchicken and feta, and with a deliciouslyrobust sundried tomato pesto, whilst mypartner indulged in the Marines’ take on oneof his favourites, a creamy hot smokedsalmon skink served in its own bread bowl. The specials board enticed us for the mainevent. For me, what has now become amodern classic -scallops with black pudding.Perfectly seared and sweet, they werefragrant with basil oil and came with

mashed potatoes. Across the table, moistsea bass fillets were complimented by acreamy, curried mussel sauce andjasmine rice.

Our youngest son had opted for the soupand wrap, and promised to share his warmbanana pancakes with ice cream andbutterscotch sauce - wonderfully indulgentthey were too.

A combination of cracking location, goodfood, interesting beers and speedy, friendlyservice mean that a return visit is onthe cards.

Lunch Review: The Marine Hotel, Stonehaven

Dinner Review:The Bhan Thai, AberdeenYou can’t beat a good session ofaromatherapy, but on this occasion I wasn’tbeing massaged with essential oils, I wasrevelling in the enticing aromas waftingaround the restaurant.

The Thai experience began with friendlywaiting staff dressed in elegant Thai dressesand a Singha Thai beer in hand. We facedsome difficult decisions but didn’t opt for oneof the five set menus. However, we didsubmit to the Bhan Thai starter platter(£7.95 per person). 2009 is the year of Scotland’s Homecoming, and one ofthe best things to come out of our fair country isDrambuie. The history of this drink spans back over 250years and pretty much everyone’s drinks cabinet has abottle, although it is mostly at the back gathering dust! The perception it has as a pensioners’ drink, that can onlybe enjoyed over ice, could not be more wrong; thiswhisky-based liqueur with heather honey hasgreat mixability.

Enjoy it with ginger beer, soda and lime, or try this reallysimple variation on a classic daiquiri that you can make at home: 50ml Drambuie, Juice of a whole lime & 2teaspoons of clear honey

Shake ingredients together with ice and then strain thecontents into a martini glass. If you want somethinglonger and a little more refreshing, strain it into a tall glasswith ice, and add ginger ale. This drink shows how easy itis to make great drinks at home;the key is to use a few qualityingredients to bring outthe best in the product.

With the 1980s trend of baggingcarpets in favour of the wooden floor, anyone with a nuance of interiordesign flair was shopping for rugs.

Jean Moncrieff – a Gray’s School of Artgraduate in textile design andweaving - was among them. Yet, thedrab designs and inferior quality rugsshe found in North-east stores fellshort of her expectations and failedto inspire.

“I thought I could do much betterthan that and started to do someresearch,” remembers Jean, whoseneedlepoint designs were then sellingin prestigious shopping destinations, such as Harrods and Liberty of London.

She was fascinated to discover thatthe craft of weaving was brought toNepal by exiled Tibetans in the late1950s/early 1960s.

Jean made a trip to Kathmandu tovisit a number of accredited weaverswho work with high quality woolfrom sheep reared in the Tibetanmountains. She selected the mostskilled to produce high wool-count

rugs to her individual, inspired designs.

All colours are dyed exclusively, whichmakes each one of Jean’s rugs a one-off. Styles range from traditional tominimalist, and she can work to aclient’s own design or create abespoke pattern to complement theappeal of a room.

Working from her home in Aboyne,Jean’s designs adorn the floors andwalls of palaces, hotels, galleries andprivate homes around the world.

She and her suppliers are members ofthe Rugmark quality foundation, through which a percentage of hersales are returned to Nepal for thebenefit of workers in the rug andcarpet trade.

The jewellery business has always been a labourof love for soul mates, Jacqui and Duncan Grant.

The husband and wife team met whilestudying 3D design, specialising injewellery, at Aberdeen’s Gray’s School ofArt in 1989.

“The only available seat in thedepartment was next to Duncan – andthe rest, they say, is history,” said Jacqui.

Their personal and professional liveshave been in tandem ever since. The pairworked together on the RennieMackintosh collection at Carrick in the‘90s, before moving to Sandy Menzies, where Duncan was workshop managerand Jacqui had the role of seniordesigner/retail manager.

They launched contemporary Scottishjewellery specialist, Lava Jewellery, in2006 – an enterprise that became a full-time venture for the couple at the end oflast year.

Their distinctive and exclusivecollections are strongly influenced bythe Scottish landscape and thememories they evoke for Jacqui andDuncan. ‘Coastline’ immortalises amoonlit, beach front walk shared atLossiemouth, while the Burns collectionhonours the bard in the year of thehomecoming. That’s not all that’spersonal about Lava. Jacqui frequentlymeets clients for a coffee to chat over

ideas for bespoke designs, which arethen modelled in wax to give the owneran accurate picture of how the piecewill look.

“It’s a different style of dealing withpeople,” explained Jacqui, whosebusiness also specialises in remodellingwork, or the setting of stones whichhave been acquired by Aberdeen’s oilindustry professionals on theirworldwide travels.

For example, it weighs less than a LotusEvora, 2750 lbs to be exact, and has a V12Mercedes engine with over 600 bhp. Atthe touch of the throttle, because there isno weight in the car, there is no delaybefore the power arrives. The Zondaaccelerates like a Formula One car andwith its bubble canopy, shovel nose androcket-like tail pipes, it turns heads likenone other. Who cares what its 0 – 60 is,or its top speed – both are out ofthis world.

What I find interesting is the backgroundof the designer, Horacio Pagani. Heoriginates from Argentina, the son of a

baker, and he probably would havecarried on the family business had he notstarted to avidly read Auto magazines. He established his own small shop in1977 and started to design and build cartrailers and their suspensions. He wasthen asked to rebody a race car, as in hisspare time he liked to work with fibreglass. Later he went on to design andbuild a racing car from scratch. This tookhim a year and, true to his name, the carcame in at 88 lbs lighter than all theothers in the same category.

Fast forward to today: the Zonda’s interiorhas amazing attention to detail, e.g. every

stitch in the soft trim is precisely placedand tensioned. Although the Zondadrives like a racing car, getting in and outof the Zonda is relatively easy. Pagani iswell aware that people of all shapes andsizes will wish to drive this car.

Let’s face it, without Horacio there is noZonda and if I tell you he works on everytechnical aspect of his car – he is chiefstylist, chief engineer, chief executiveand also head of public relations - hedoes truly put his heart and soul intothe Zonda.

MOTORING

It is almost impossible to describe the Zonda- you really have to see it in the flesh, as thistruly is a Supercar in every way.

Dear Trend,

I picked up my first copy of you for the first time while in Vanity buying a dress formy Vegas wedding in November. I am totally hooked and can’t wait for the nextone; you have lots of great features, competitions and most importantly it lets meknow whats happening in Aberdeen. I enjoy eating out and reading restaurantreviews. As I am vegetarian it can be frustrating going to a restaurant with limitedchoices for vegetarians. It would be very helpful when reading reviews if it wasmetioned if they catered for vegetarians. I wonder if this is something you wouldconsider when reviewing them in your magazine? Thank you.

The winding road along the southbanks of Loch Tay leads to the door ofthe Ardeonaig Hotel and Restaurant. There has been an inn at Ardeonaigsince 1649.

South African chef/owner PeteGottgens has combined the best oflocal produce with the influences of hishomeland to provide a uniqueexperience.

The wine list is totally South African withsome of the wines imported directlyfrom small producers whom Peteknows personally. Sommelier JamesPayne is on hand to guide you withyour choice.

It was hard to pull ourselves away fromour stylishly decorated junior suite inthe garden cottage, but dinner called. While we opted to dine in therestaurant, there is also the option of the more casual cellar where you cansavor the food, surrounded by wine.

We chose the gourmet menu, and eachcourse was complemented with achosen wine. Each dish was beautifullyprepared and presented: Uig smokedsalmon, Orkney scallops, lobster, hare (afirst for me, delicately gamey and verytender), slow-cooked Ardeonaiglamb and a platter of small desserts. After a delicious breakfast in the study, itwas time to say goodbye to theArdeonaig - our new retreat.

Haste ye back Tranquility inthe highlands

This is Nairn, just a two hour drive northof Aberdeen, not, as you may have beenthinking, a haven in the Med.

Nairn nestles perfectly on the MorayFirth and, as we sauntered along theshore to the Golf View Hotel for adelicious early supper and a glass ofwine, my partner and I made plans forthe weekend. The town is a short drive from many Highland attractions, two championship golf courses and thewooded beauty of Culbin Forest, sothere was plenty to choose from.

We plumped for the FindhornFoundation on Saturday and toured itsinteresting eco-village and holisticeducation centre before sipping a chaitea at the cafe. Then we drove intoFindhorn village and ate fish and chipsat the Kimberly Inn, which overlooks the bay, and watched the setting sun.

On Sunday I fulfilled a long held dreamwhen we visited Loch Ness and I wasn’tdisappointed - it truly is a beautifullandscape. We drove along the morerugged south side of the Loch to Fort

Augusta, where we sat in the sunshineand watched boats navigate the locksthrough to the Caledonian Canal, thenback up along the north side toUrquhart Castle. The day endedwonderfully as we watched dolphinsleap and dance through the water atFortrose on the Back Isle.

Nairn proved to be a perfect base forour weekend and, after browsingthrough quaint gift shops and enjoyinga morning coffee at Henry’s, I knew thatit wouldn’t be long before I return.

Close your eyes and picture clear blue waters driftingin across a beautiful, sandy beach. See families strollingalong the boulevard laughing and enjoying thewarmth of the mid-day sun and imagine every stress, strain and worry ease away on a gentle breeze.

Anyone who has taken an interest in thelocal music scene over the last number ofyears will know the name Stanley.

This could be because:A) They’ve got a vibraphone player.B) And they’re one of the best bands the cityhas seen - an enviably capable and inventiveband who seem to have an endless supply oftalent and originality. C) A little from column A, a little fromcolumn B.

Stanley are about to make waves in themusic industry as they near completion oftheir debut album, entitled ‘Animals WithAmazing Disguises’. The album has takenthem two years to get to this point, althoughthey’ve hardly been dragging their heels.

At the heart of the band is Steven Podlesny. Not just a gifted singer/songwriter, he’s also atalented recording engineer - somethingwhich is no small asset to the band and their future.

He explains, “We recorded ‘Animals..’ourselves. And we’re perfectionists. So wespent the last couple of years experimentingwith different recording techniques andrecording, experimenting, learning and re-recording over and over until we got it right.”

For an example of this, go towww.myspace.com/iamstanley where youcan listen to three tracks. The results arenothing short of stunning. All three are socleverly arranged, so accomplished, soaudacious that it’s hard to imagine they were

self-recorded in a rehearsal room near the harbour.

There are definitely hints of The DivineComedy in Stanley’s music –Podlesny’sintelligent lyrics, vocal range and tenor isreminiscent of Neil Hannon (..or Scott Walker)but their music has more of a creative edge, inviting further favourable comparisons withThe Bad Seeds, Radiohead and Frank Zappa.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a band of theircalibre, the rest of Stanley is comprised of animpressive array of talented musicians. Threemembers (co-founder and guitarist PaulDavidson, drummer Billy McBain andpiano/vibes player Geoff Jones) are musicteachers while bassist Ramsay Clark is arecognisable veteran of the Aberdeen scene.

With a winter release due, Animals WithAmazing Disguises is bound to attract seriousattention from the music industry. It’s reallythat good. Now go and find out for yourself

PROFILE

Reading between the lines with...

Stuart MacBrideAnyone who has ever seen Stuart MacBridespeak will be familiar with his wicked, selfdeprecating sense of humour. Trend askedthe bestselling author for an insight into hisearly years...

I was born in Dumbarton, but ran away tojoin the circus when I was nine years old, where I specialised in wrestling bears formoney, (going on to represent Great Britainat the Atlanta Olympics). In 1975 I won theNobel Prize for Peace for my revolutionarywork on Irn-Bru, before creating the world’sbiggest ball of bellybutton lint. In 1989 Ijoined the secret intelligence service, butwas later invalided out due to a back injurysustained while performing a reverse-overhead-pile driver on a grizzly bear. Now

confined to my pyjamas, I while away mytime writing crime novels set in Aberdeenand lying to journalists.

From whom or where did you drawthe inspiration for the character DS Logan McRae?Nowhere and everywhere – he’scompletely made up. I wanted him to be aneveryday kind of bloke, instead of the bigalcoholic hero-types that litter crime fiction.

If you were to be offered the chanceto become a fictional character for 48 hours, who would you be?Definitely Superman, then I could do all thatcool mucking about with time by makingthe world turn backwards, make diamonds

with my eyeballs, and seeing through stuff. The only trouble would be having to wearyour underpants on the wrong side of yourtrousers.

Which book would you choose asyour desert island read?It would have to be Hard Frost by R.D.Wingfield – DI Jack Frost is the kind ofcharacter I can go back to again, and again, and again.

What's been the highlight of yourliterary career?Getting flown out to New Zealand andAustralia earlier this year, where I got todrink lots of the local wine and eat lots ofthe local wildlife.
