2010 OverviewA year marking the end o the rst decade o the new millennium. A year where we shall see whetherthe rst two years o the USAs 44th President has indeed bought Change and to what extent the rest o

the world has ollowed. A year in which the echoes o the nancial slump can still be heard. A year still

dominated by talk o the environment.

Design has always been an indicator o the condition o the world and acts as documentation o what is

around us, with colour standing as a representation o collective emotion and cultural identity. Rather than

being dominated by the shackles o nancial and environmental restraint, the colours o 2010 are driven

by a new ound reedom, a airer distribution o wealth and a realistic approach to the dangers posed to our

environment. There is a reedom too in the way we are beginning to work as a collective society rather than

a disparate group o individuals. Resources are being shared, cooperative outlets are emerging as a genuine

point o opposition against multinational companies and there is a renewed sense o pulling together toachieve realistic goals.

Emerging, newly-moneyed nations bring with them a resh set o consumer demands. The hydrogen cell is

close to becoming a genuine alternative source o power. Technology is becoming more amiliar and seems

almost old-ashioned. Our buying decisions are not driven by impulses and are instead planned and viewed

as investments while we turn to the personal touch to enrich our lives with elements o playul luxury and

    pedigree.

TraceLuxury takes on a more personal edge with Trace, the story which

embraces the journey to the end result. The search or the perect purchase

is one where knowledge and planning are rewarded with admiring glances

rom those in-the-know. One-os in unusual material combinations, designer pieces mixed with cult second-hand nds and imported heritage

opitimise the Trace audience. There is a growing number o consumers

or whom the pedigree o an item is perhaps more important than the item

itsel. Obviously, applied now, one cannot expect to source such items

easily but hints o narrative and heritage can be created. Regenerated

classics, or lost design blueprints can be used to give the consumer a piece

with character and identity. A rich palette with a aded patina, dulled by

the passage o time and classical colours anchored to key movements in

designs history. This story is about the story.

A rich palette o once bright zingy colours, now carrying the warm patinao time. A dextrous palette which produces usable and enduring colour

combinations or spaces, urniture, abrics or boutique hospitality spaces.

Muted monochromes, sunkissed pastels or an edge o nuance can be

extracted rom the Trace story to suggest elements o legacy.

RuseA cunning trend. Ruse leads its audience down a theatrical path ull

o twists and turns like a master auteur. Symbolic imagery twisted by

unreachable visions o the uture, Ruse is moody and emotive. Its also a

cheeky approach to design and styling with a take on design and stylingthat is staged and orchestrated like a muder mystery. Nothing is what it

seems but this is a deliberate illusion with a mix o symbolic imagery rom

past ages. A rich palette driven by burgundy and evocative greens, Ruse

has applications across the design spectrum rom dynamic powerul ashion

silhouettes to contract interiors in the hospitality sector or striking product

design. Adding mystery and levels o subtext to the creative process and its

results gives clients and customers something to really sink their teeth into

a strong colour story driven by a design subtext.

A sophisticated trend palette with a tactile edge taking in high-gloss,

velvets, dulled mattes and the super smooth. Greyed pinks and creamyneutrals open up the rich high-end green, purples, cobalt and burgundy.

High-end applications typiy the uses o the Ruse colour trend.

ZephyrA light, airy trend to enhance and uplit the viewer, Zephyr brings balance

and tranquillity to design. The story is heavily inspired by the Japanese

way o living and acts as a still reuge or busy and stressul modern lives.

Delicate blues and sot pinks balance a base o darker tones, giving thedesigner a fexible palette with which to enrich interior spaces, abrics or

suraces. Zephyr represents the collective desire or calm and peace. It

also serves to show what a suggestion o colour can do when used in large

expanses bringing a gentle impact in its application. When addressing the

spatial application o the trend look towards a single point o delicate ocus

or a gentle movement on a giant canvas. A timeless palette with many uses.

An interesting balance o opposing colours operating at very dierent ends

o a very small scale. Light whisps o colour on one level, airy in their

ambition but tempered by lazy blues and light purples hovering over a

summer horizon. Applications like in cosmetic lines, enclaves o retreat andrelaxation in both contract, hospitality or residential uses and innovation-

    led industrial design and technology.

PokeLike a contagious viral media campaign, Poke is a dynamic trend with

enough potential to create a standstill. Poke nds its energy rom the sense

o rebellion among the younger generations who are empowered by a desire

to get what they want. However, its not a consumerist desire, moveover apractical application o desire and needs. I a product, concept, place, vision

does not yet exist why wait or someone else to make it when you can do

it yoursel. A base o powerul blue-greys and hints o gold provide a stark

contrast or strong accents which can be applied in large or small quantities

as detailing or swathes o colour. Used architecturally Poke brings in the

advances o light technology to lit the base colours. Products or ashion are

brought to lie by strong chromatic colourways giving the user statement

pieces that will not ail to deliver an impact.

Cubed greys orm a solid platorm or the collision o oranges, near-neons,

yellow or toxic green which can be used together as accents or applied insingle tones. Poke lends itsel to dualistic architectural spaces, shopping

malls which double as bars during the evening, statement oce spaces with

structural partitioning, light acting as geometric ocal points.

BouquetIts been said many times but there is nothing to match the colours o

nature. It has also been said that a bunch o careully picked and selected

fowers cannot be beaten in terms o gesture and meaning. Bouquet is a

palette ull o surprise and excitement; the colours o nature in its purestorm. The story is an upliting one, packed ull o positive connotations

and ideal or contemporary design with its realistic popping accents

giving a designer scope to use colour without alienating the mass market.

Think o Bouquet as a move away rom the eco-riendly saturation we

have now, where eco products are essentially driven by prot. The more

realistic approach is that everything should carry positive eco-credentials

as standard and that the real progression lies in the practical application o

design or a better uture. New materials, concepts, technology will enhance

our lives with more practical solutions than addy eco-landll. Its time or

design to come to the ore.Robust natural colours are taken out o natures context to appear almost

synthetic, the power o polychromatic fowers are grounded with a

selection o rich vegetal tones, woods and mineral tones. Inter-disciplinary

applications lie across ashion, beauty, product design, residential interior,

    hospitality and retail accents.

Colour Trend Focus is the latest workshop to emerge rom the Scandinavian Colour School, the dedicated

colour school based in Stockholm and aliated to the Scandinavian Colour Institute. Inviting participants

rom across the design ramework, rom ashion to product design and highly experienced coloursists,

the colour trend panel met to discuss trends or 2010 under the guidance o renowned colour and trend

orecaster, Latika Khosla and Berit Bergstrom.

The aim being to produce an accurate and applicable selection o colour trend stories grounded in what is

and will be easible in the application o colour in design. These ndings are documented or use within the

design industry and are backed up by ull NCS colour reerences or quick application o these trends.

Seeing as using a colour trend should be ecient rather than ambiguous it makes perect sense that the

colour stories are documented using NCS, the worlds most accurate colour system or design.
