TREND ANALYSIS OF PADDY CULTIVATION IN KERALA

Agricultural crops in the state are broadly divided into two classes- Food and

Non-Food crops. The ratio of food crop area to non-food crop area in the state in 1968-69

was 64:36. But in 1995-96 the ratio was 47:53.and in 2004-05 it was 44: 56. The main

food crop in Kerala is rice. The area under Paddy during 1967-68 was 48% of the total

food crop area. But in 1995-96 it was15% and in 2004-05 it was 10%. The area under

paddy in different seasons in the state during the years 1995-96 and 2004-05 is narrated

below.

During the span of ten years (i.e. from1995-96 to 2004-05), the state witnessed a

decrease of 44%, 34%, and 40% in paddy field area in Autumn, winter, Summer seasons

respectively. In general there is an overall decrease of 38.5% paddy grown area .The

districts which record major decrease of paddy field area in Autumn season are

Pathanamthitta (70%), Thiruvananthapuram (69%), Kozhikode (68%),

Malappuram(65%). The paddy grown area showed the least decrease (20%) in Palakkad

district, which is the largest paddy growing district of the state. The districts which

showed drastic decrease of winter paddy are Thiruvananthapuram (69%), Kollam (59%),

Pathanamthitta (53%) and Malappuram (50%). As in Autumn, Palakkad district showed

minimum fall in area of paddy in winter (11%). Eranakulam and Palakkad districts had

recorded considerable decrease in summer paddy area. The decrease in paddy area is 62%

in Ernankulam and 89% in Palakkad.

As said earlier, Palakkad district occupied the first place in Autumn paddy area in

the state during the years 1995-96 (36%) and 2004-05 (53%).The percentage distribution

of Autumn paddy area in few other districts in the state is Eranakulam (11%), Thrissur

(11%) & Kozhikode (1%) during the year 1995-96. In 2004-05 it was 10% in

Eranakulam, 9% in Thrissur and very negligible % in Kozhikode. There is no Autumn

paddy cultivation in Wayanad district.

Out of the total area of paddy field in winter season in the state during the

period 1995-96, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernankulam, Alappuzha and Malappuram districts

recorded 27%, 13%,10%, 9% and 9% respectively. After ten years the winter paddy area

was changed by 38% in Palakkad, 12% inThrissur,8%in Ernankulam, 9% in Alappuzha

and 7% in Malappuram districts.

High Yielding and Local Variety

It is found that in Autumn season of 1995-96, the area under HYV paddy

was 38% and Local Variety was 62%. But during the year 2004-05 its ratio was 93:7.

Similarly in Winter season it changed from 23% to 78% and in Summer it changed from

69% to 99%. In autumn season of 1995-96, the area coverage of HYV paddy in

Kozhikode, Palakkad and Malappuram was 34%, 12% and 32% respectively. It is seen

that the coverage of HIV’s during 2004-05 (Winter season) in Kottayam and Alappuzha

is 98% & 96% respectively while in Kozhikode it is only 16%.

Awareness programmes to enlighten the farmers to use high yielding varieties

of seeds have to be arranged for the cultivators so as to make paddy cultivation a

profitable and remunerative activity. Due to the lack of awareness about modern high

yielding seeds and other inputs of cultivation, a good percentage of farmers still resort to

conventional cultivation practices. This results in low productivity, production and there

by low income. This to a certain extent detracts the farmers from paddy cultivation

Irrigation

During the year 1995-96 the ratio of irrigated and un-irrigated paddy area was

50:50. The ratio of irrigated Paddy area to un-irrigated paddy area in the state during

2004-05 is 63:37. District-wise details are given. In Autumn season during the year

2004-05, irrigated area was very high in Alappuzha(92%) and Kottayam(90%) districts

. But it was very negligible in Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode,

Kannur, Kasaragode and Kollam districts. In winter season of the year 100% irrigation

was recorded in Thrissur, Eranakulam, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta. But irrigated

winter paddy area during the year in Kozhikode district was only 30%.

Production

The total rice production during the year 2004-05 was estimated as 6.67 lakh

tonnes as against 13.39 lakh tonnes during 1981-82. This shows a decreasing trend in the

production of rice over the years. Thus within 23 years, there is a decrease of nearly 6.72

lakh tonnes rice i.e. a decrease of more than 50%. From the table, it is seen that Palakkad

is the chief rice producing district and accounts for 39% of the total rice poroduction in

the state. Thrissur and Alapuzha are the other major rice producing districts of the state.

In the case of rice production (Autumn), Palakkad district has increased its contribution

from 41% to 52% in 2004-05 when compared to the year 1995-96 But the share of

production(Autumn) trend of other districts is negative(Except Alappuzha &

Kasaragode).In 2004-05 winter season Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha and Kollam

district showed a 50% decline in rice production and Kottayam district marked the least

decrease, only 4%.In 2004-05, winter season Palakkad district contributed 40% of total

production and followed by Thrissur (12%) and Alappuzha (10%). In summer rice

production, Alappuzha occupies first position i.e.32% while Palakkad produced only 1%

of the total production in the state. Out of the three seasons, winter paddy, production is

comparatively high in the state.

Productivity

The yield per hectare was highest in Alappuzha (4386kg) followed by Kottayam

(4369Kg) in Autumn season. In Winter season the productivity of paddy in the state

ranged between 2078Kg (Kozhikode) and 3890Kg (Idukki) per hectare. But the state

average was 3430Kg/Hct. The yield rate per hectare was less than the state average in

districts Kollam, Eranakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragode. Rice

productivity in Alappuzha district during winter season (1995-96) was 4527 Kg/hect

while the productivity during the same season in 2004-05 is 3581Kg/hect The

productivity of paddy in the state during the last 10 years, increased from 2807Kg/Hct to

3494Kg/Hct, 3104Kg/Hct to 3430Kg/Hcts in Autumn and winter seasons respectively

and it decreased from 3835g/Hct to 3823Kg/Hct in Summer season.

The state produces only around 6.67lakh tones of rice i.e. One fifth (1/5) of its

annual requirement of estimated 30 lakh tonnes. Kerala depends on other states for its rice

requirement. The paddy fields are being reclaimed for non-agricultural purposes and

which reduces the rice production in the state. The state Govt. and other local self Govts

aim to sustain paddy cultivation and to push up the average productivity to more than 5

tonnes per hectare. Additional infrastructure and better management of land and water

resources on the basis of systems approach have to be encouraged. The tendency of

conversion of paddy fields to non-paddy or non–agricultural purposes has to be

discouraged by adopting various measures. State Govt. or local self Govts have to

identify areas where paddy cultivation can be carried out profitably and to proclaim these

areas for exclusive paddy production areas and to encourage the farmers by giving

necessary helps so that paddy production can be increased to a very good extent . These

paddy sown areas should include Pokkali lands, Kari, Kayal and Karapadam land of

Kuttanad and Kole lands in Thrissur and other suitable areas for paddy production in the

districts. Programmes aim to reduce cost of cultivation, increase production; productivity

and marketing facilities for making paddy cultivation profitable have to be chalked out

sincerely by all concerned. . Reclamation of paddy field should be totally banned and the

ban order has to be stringently executed.
