Step 1: What do seedlings need to live and grow? Seedlings need the right amounts of sunlight, water and nutrients to live and grow into healthy trees. Different types of trees have different requirements, so seedlings will need planting sites that meet all of their requirements. For example, pine trees need full sun, a moderate amount of water and a certain combination of nutrients to grow into healthy trees. If you plant them in the shade, or they do not get enough water or the right nutrients, they will not do as well and maybe even die. Step 2: Transporting and storing your seedlings Always handle seedlings gently and by the root-ball, not the stem, and never throw, drop or shake them. At the nursery, check your seedlings to make sure the root-balls are wet. Seedlings should be packed into plastic bags and placed in sturdy containers during transport to prevent them from falling over and breaking. Once you get home, store your seedlings in a place sheltered from direct sun and wind, and protected from wandering animals and children. Check seedlings frequently to make sure the root-balls stay moist and that they remain upright. Step 3: Selecting and preparing your planting spots. Everything growing on your planting site will be competing with your new seedlings for sunlight, water and nutrients. To reduce competition, remove all vegetation from a 1/2-meter area surrounding each planting spot. On flat sites and/or sites free of obstructions, seedlings are planted in the center of scalped areas. Small, earthen basins constructed around scalped areas protect new seedlings from wind and collect and hold water that drains directly into the root systems. On uneven or steep sites, seedlings are planted in areas behind natural obstructions such as stumps, rocks or fallen logs, where they are protected from wind and extreme temperatures.
