9:00 – 10:15 Bartlett Research Update Tom Smiley, Ph.D. A discussion of new research at the Bartlett Lab, including recent data on how trees grow in different soils under pavement, work with nickel deficiency, growth regulators, fruit inhibitors, and other treatments to improve tree health.

10:45 – 11:45 Creating Blight-Resistant American Chestnuts through Genetic Engineering

William A. Powell, Ph.D. Many tools have been brought to bear on

the American chestnut blight problem. Current research is focusing on enhancing blight resistance by adding genes to the chestnut genome using the tools of genetic engineering. These blight-resistant trees can be used to rescue the genetic diversity in the remnant, surviving population of American chestnut and be an additional tool for the restoration of this important keystone tree.

11:45 – 1:00 Lunch

1:00 – 1:45 D.C.’s New Tree Canopy Protection Law William Eck The nation’s capital has perhaps the strictest tree preservation policy in the country. Washington D.C. increases the value of trees by making them expensive or impossible to legally remove. Eck will discuss the law’s provisions, permitting requirements and implications. Could this policy be replicated elsewhere?

1:45 – 2:45 The New Pruning Standard Tom Smiley, Ph.D. In early 2017 the new ANSI pruning standard will be published and go into effect. Changes between the old and new standard will be discussed as well as the practical implications, including structural pruning.

2:45 – 3:00 Wrap-Up

WILLIAM ECK came to Bartlett Tree Experts 11 years ago, starting as a Plant Health Care Specialist. Now as an Arborist Representative and ISA Certified Arborist, he works with customers in Washington D.C., where he has developed a depth of knowledge of the trees, pests, diseases, soils, and people in the area. He earned his B.S. in Forest Science from Penn State University and went on to study Forest Ecology and earn an M.S. degree at West Virginia University.

DR. WILLIAM A. POWELL is a faculty member and Director of the American Chestnut Research & Restoration Project at the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry. For decades, he has been researching methods to develop a blight-resistant American chestnut. Dr. Powell received his B.S. in Biology at Salisbury University and his Ph.D. in Biology from Utah State University studying the chestnut blight fungus.

DR. TOM SMILEY is a Senior Arboricultural Researcher at the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory and an adjunct professor of Urban Forestry at Clemson University. Dr. Smiley is active in the arboriculture industry and has co-authored many of the ISA’s Best Management Practices. His research has led to improved methods of increasing sidewalk longevity near trees, protecting trees from lightning damage, improving tree root growth, and reducing tree risk.
