Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis which affects the spine. It causes inflammation and fusion in the vertebrae, which are the bones that make the spine. In some people, it can involve other joints as well. This disease develops at a very young age and mostly affects the youngsters in the form of back pain. It commonly occurs in men as compared to women. The cause of this disease can be either genetic or environmental and can be diagnosed by medical history or physical examination.

Radiological and blood test is also involved. The main gene associated to Ankylosing Spondylitis is called HLA-B27, the presence of which can be detected in the blood of the patient.

The symptoms of the disease include a chronic pain and stiffness in the lower back. Individuals often experience these symptoms early in the morning.

It also causes inflammation in the ligaments and tendons that attach to bones and may cause pain and stiffness in the area behind or beneath the heel, such as the Achilles tendon at the back of the ankle.

And if not treated Ankylosing spondylitis can also affect the heart, lungs, eyes, and at times kidney as well.
