Treatment for Lonely Boy

LONELY BOYWe have chosen ‘Lonely Boy’ as our song for our music video and promotional package. It is a rock/pop made by The Black Keys. We firstly noticed the great beat that the song had, which had a lot of editorial potential. We wanted to make a fun and interesting video, contrasting our dramatic previous work, which this song gave us a platform to work with such as a fast energetic tempo. There are minimal lyrics, however a repeated chorus which stood as a clear motif. We want to use this motif to promote the artist, with the verses standing as opportunity for quirky conceptual film.

THE BLACK KEYSThe Black Keys are an American rock duo formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums). The duo began as an independent act, recording music in basements and self-producing their records, before they eventually emerged as one of the most popular garage rock artists in 2010. The band's raw blues rock sound draws heavily from Auerbach's blues influences, including Junior Kimbrough, Howlin' Wolf, and Robert Johnson. The Black Keys are known for their popular quirky music videos, as they compliment yet oppose their sound.

Our ideaThe main focus of our idea is the energy in the video. For the 2 verses we want to take inspiration for riptide and film exactly what the lyrics suggest literally. However for the chorus, we want to create a massive dance performance. The way we will link it is through similar colours and themes between the two concepts. We want to style the dance scenes to be expressive and natural as if you’re letting yourself go. We will take inspiration from both ‘Happy’ and ‘Uptown Funk’.

We want to include 5 set characters:1 – Artists2 – Gran3 – Boy4 – Aerobics/Runner5 – Tattooed girl

RIPTIDEThe main reason we are taking inspiration for Riptide is the humour within filming literally exactly what the lyrics suggest. It’s also a fast paced song due to the amount of cuts which is what we want to replicate. We want to use this idea for the verses of the song to promote humour. We realise that this will require a lot of props and choreography, however this is what will make an energtic/fun video. However, in riptide there are a lot of negative lyrics and visuals, as she is being taken away, with a deep narrative. We want to oppose this by keeping the video simplistic.

UPTOWN FUNKIn uptown funk we want to recreate the energy and the shot types. There are a lot of 80’s styled extreme low angle shots, which bring humour and a clear style. Equally, the attention to detail in costume and prop matches the time period and style of the song. Another great feature is the character presentation and the connection between the characters is obvious which is important as we need our actors to be believable. We also need them to be able to encourage people to get of their seats and dance. Finally the most important factor of combining the two elements together is the colours and styles of the performance and conceptual clips. It needs to match and blend in well.

HAPPYHappy is a very upbeat video which includes dance and choreography. Between each dancer there is always a match cut, which makes the video run very smoothly. We love that when every match cut occurs, there is a different dancer that comes up. The artist, Pharell Williams is a main character in the music video as is constantly appearing. This is good to promote the artists which is something we need to do.

LOCATIONLike in the Happy video we want to include lot’s of different locations however with a lot of match cuts so they blend it well together. The brick wall for the artist, the park for the areobics/runner, brick lane for the goth girl and Sainsburys for the Gran.

COSTUME OF ARTISTThe artist’s costume will represent their personality and style of music. It needs to be

something that will deem them as confident and an interesting character. We have chosen a few different outfits that he could wear.

OTHER CHARACTERS

The other characters that will feature in the video should all wear costume that fits under their character stereotype. This will bring humour in our video as the characters will fit with their stereotypes.
