Continuous improvementMonash is committed to Excellence in education and strives for the highest
possible quality in teaching and learning. To monitor how successful we are inproviding quality teaching and learning Monash regularly seeks feedbackfrom students, employers and staff. One of the key formal ways studentshave to provide feedback is through Unit Evaluation Surveys. It is Monash
policy for every unit offered to be evaluated each year. Students are stronglyencouraged to complete the surveys as they are an important avenue forstudents to have their say. The feedback is anonymous and provides theFaculty with evidence of aspects that students are satisfied and areas forimprovement.
Faculties have the option of administering the Unit Evaluation survey onlinethrough the my.monash portal or in class. Lecturers will inform students of the
method being used for this unit towards the end of the semester.
Previous Student Evaluations of this unit
If you wish to view how previous students rated this unit, please go tohttp://www.monash.edu.au/unit-evaluation-reports/
Over the past few years the Faculty of Engineering has made a number ofimprovements to its units as a result of unit evaluation feedback. Some of
these benefits include tutor/demonstrator training, improved objectives and
better feedback mechanisms.
Immediate feedback for us.
Feedback is welcome at any time throughout the semester. Please use email to send
it to the unit co-ordinator, or in person.
You may wish to use the open ended questions in the unit evaluation to provide
written feedback on your experience of this and whether it has been helpful to youduring this semester.

Teaching and Learning MethodTutorial allocation
There are 2-hours of practice classes scheduled each week, commencing in week 2.Students must enrol in one practice class only using Allocate Plus. Students notallocated to a particular practice class will not be accepted into that session without
the written consent of the unit co-ordinator. Once a particular session is full, no morestudents will be accepted, unless evidence is shown that timetabling means that isthe only session possible.Communication, participation and feedback
Monash aims to provide a learning environment in which students receive a range of
ongoing feedback throughout their studies. In this unit it will take the form of groupfeedback via practice classes, individual feedback, peer feedback, self-comparison,verbal and written feedback, discussions in class, as well as more formal feedbackrelated to assignment marks and grades. Students are encouraged to draw on a
variety of feedback to enhance their learning

University and Faculty policy onassessment
Due dates and extensionsThe due dates for the submission of assignments are given in the previous section. Please make every effort to submit work by the due dates. Students are advised toNOT assume that granting of an extension is a matter of course.
If you need an extension for any of the assignments, you must submit a
written request 48-hours before the due time and date, and attach supportiveevidence such as medical certificate.
The form should preferably be forwarded as an email attachment, sent tothe unit co-ordinator. The email should be sent from your university email
address with your name typed in lieu of signature.
Note that other lecturers cannot grant extensions. Lecturer-in-charge (unit co-ordinator) will indicate at the time of granting the extension whether any
penalty in marks will apply to the submitted work.
If an extension is granted, the approval must be attached to the assignment.
Late assignment
If you are late in applying for an extension or you dont have a good reason,
you should still submit the work, but 10% of the total marks available for thatassessment component will usually be deducted for each day late.
No assignment will be accepted once an assignment has been returned to the
class.
Deferred tests and examinations may be granted in cases of extenuatingpersonal circumstances such as serious personal illness or bereavement.
Remember, you are required to keep an up-to-date copy of all submitted
assignments to safeguard against the loss of work through accident or error.
Return datesStudents can expect assignments to be returned within two weeks of thesubmission date or after receipt, whichever is later.
Assessment for the unit as a whole is in accordance with the provisions of the

Plagiarism, cheating and collusion
The University regards most seriously any acts of dishonesty in assessment
such as plagiarism, collusion, resubmission of previously marked work indifferent units, examination misconduct and theft of other students work.
Plagiarism While some people incorrectly assume that plagiarism occursonly where someone copies verbatim, it really involves taking and using
another persons ideas or work and passing these off as ones own by failingto give appropriate acknowledgement; that is, not indicating by referencing
that the ideas expressed are not your own. Good scholarship is marked by anacknowledgement of the origin of ideas you use, develop or synthesise.
Collusion (or unauthorised collaboration) Means joint effort in preparingmaterial submitted for assessment, between students or others, except wherethis has been approved by the lecturer-in-charge of the unit.
Cheating Means seeking to obtain an unfair advantage in anexamination or in other written or practical work required to be submitted or
completed by a student for assessment. Hence, if the passing off was doneintentionally you have cheated, if it was not intentional, the offence you havecommitted is the academic misdemeanor of failing to reference a sourcecorrectly.
Acts of dishonesty in assessment could result in penalties, including failure inthe unit and possible exclusion from the University. For further details please
refer to the Universitys Discipline Statute (Statute 4.1).
University statements on plagiarism are contained in the University Discipline
Statute 4.1 at:http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/calendar/statutes/Statute04.html andaccompanying guidelines at:
http://www.adm.monash.edu.au/unisec/academicpolicies/policy/plagiarism.html and http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/srg/section2-22.html
Register of counselling about plagiarism
The university requires faculties to keep a simple and confidential register to
record counselling to students about plagiarism (e.g. warnings). The registeris accessible to Associate Deans Teaching (or nominees) and, whererequested, students concerned have access to their own details in theregister.
Non-discriminatory language
The Faculty of Engineering is committed to the use of non-discriminatory
language in all forms of communication. Discriminatory language is that whichrefers in abusive terms to gender, race, age, sexual orientation, citizenship ornationality, ethnic or language background, physical or mental ability, orpolitical or religious views, or which stereotypes groups in an adverse
manner. This is not meant to preclude or inhibit legitimate academic debateon any issue; however, the language used in such debate should be non-

discriminatory and sensitive to these matters. It is important to avoid the useof discriminatory language in your written work. The most common form ofdiscriminatory language in academic work tends to be in the area of genderinclusiveness. You are, therefore, requested to check your work for this and
to ensure it is non-discriminatory in all respects.
Students with disabilities
Students with disabilities that may disadvantage them in assessment shouldseek advice from Faculty of Engineering Student Service staff and/or their
Unit Coordinator before completing assessment tasks and examinations.
Deferred assessment and special consideration
Deferred assessment (not to be confused with an extension for submission ofan assignment) may be granted in cases of extenuating personalcircumstances such as serious personal illness or bereavement. Special
consideration in the awarding of grades is also possible in somecircumstances. Refer to the Faculty Assessment Policy and forms at:http://www.policy.monash.edu/policy-bank/academic/education/assessment/
