BOSTON SPECIALTY HOSPITALProfessor Christian DaggFall 2012

The main purpose of this project was to make a well functioning hospitalthat took into account the surrounding context in order to blend into the city.Thegeometry of the building itself is a rectangular courtyard scheme in order toprovide clear circulation on all floors and to improve efficiency. The geometryof the building allowed for the maximization of the site, allowing for thirty patientcare units per floor along the perimeter, without an enormous courtyard.

The character of Boston was utilized by using brick, setting back the topstory, and articulating the base in order to better integrate the building into thesite. In addition, by breaking down the scale of the building, similar to thebrownstone homes of Boston, certain pieces of the building pops out in referenceto the bay windows. Through this approach, the hospital is able tobecome part of the city rather than standing alone.

STUDY ABROAD- ROME, ITALYProfessor Scott FinnSpring 2012

I was given the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in Rome, which ended up being a life altering experience. There were two main projects that I focused on while being there. The first being a study of the Roman Fo-rum as shown in the watercolor painting on the right, and sketches that follow.

The second project was an in-depth study of the Via Sacra, or the processional road that begins at St. Peter’s Basilica and ends at St. John the Lateran. This road was used by the Pope on monumental occasions for hundreds of years. After the anal-ysis we then were to propose an alteration to our specific site along the Via Sacra. The site that I was given was the area around the Lateran. My proposal was to de-crease the amount of car traffic that is around the Lateran and give that space over to the Roman people. The focus was to make an addition to the Lateran to make it a more public space while not being so modern as to offend the Roman people.

BESSEMER COUNTY COURTHOUSEProfessor Doug BurlesonFall 2011

This project was a group project with two other partners and was a very enjoyable ex-perience, learning how to work well as a team. The cultural courthouse for Bessemer, Alabama is focused towards contemporary, post-modern design while maintaining classical courthouse ideals. The direction for our project started at the basis that the “courthouse” needs to read as a courthouse to the general public. From here we looked towards the architectural courthouse functions of icon, civic, and place.

As a courthouse we wanted to be an icon of the city. But it was important in our design that it did not destroy the present day context. To accomplish this we utilized symmetry and a distinctive ordered bay system that was success-ful in contributing to the urban context already present on location. Looking at the site revealed an urban area to the north and a park to the south. Therefore we decided to place emphasis on the south facade, which allows for long views from the interior circulation and great approach angles from the exterior. We then turned to Bessemer’s history for material selection, which includes a combi-nation of limestone, and steel which gives tribute to the city’s industrial past.

WETUMPKA IMPACT CRATER CENTERProfessor Justin MillerSpring 2011

This project was given to Auburn by the city of Wetumpka, to have us design a new museum to draw attention to the fact that this part of Alabama was struck by a mete-or when part of Alabama was still under water hundreds of thousands of years ago.

The museum was intended to create an experience for the public to inter-act with the landscape of the ridge, bringing the crater to the building. As the people move through the sequence of the center, views of Montgom-ery and the wetlands are created by glimpses between the walls throughout.

These are a few examples of watercolor paintings that were assigned in the class I was able to take. The first is of a street view in New Orleans, the second is of the lakehouse project that I designed, and the third is a painting of the Gulf Coast. This class was a great opportunity to learn a different medium to represent architectural drawings.

CHEF LAKE HOUSEProfessor Robert SproullFall 2010

This house was designed along Lake Martin in Alabama. The client was a chef, which was the governing factor for all decisions, the main one being the placement of the kitchen in the center of the home overlooking the lake. The facade was designed as a moving louver system that would act as a screen that could be moved all along the ex-terior of the building to adjust to the sun and different weather conditions at all times.

The home also had an interior courtyard that had a green wall system, al-lowing the chef to be able to grow his own produce and herbs to sup-ply him with fresh products all year round. The separation between the public and private functions of the house was to allow the public ar-eas to be the focus since those are the areas with a view to the water.
