“Oh the weather outside is
frightful!” But it is getting better.
Hopefully the deep freeze is
behind us, wouldn’t that be nice.
Here is hoping that everyone had
a wonderful Christmas and Santa
brought you just what you
wanted.
Now is the time for new beginnings. I am
starting the year with a new home. Just let me
get settled and I will have you over .
And it’s time for those resolutions, what
promises have you made to yourself?? Lose
weight or exercise more (that is the usual one),
learn something new or how about volunteer?
You can always host some fun activity for your
Traverski friends. You know we will show up!
I would like to thank those wonderful people
who put out the extra effort to run the trips, host
a football game at their home or put together a
meet and ski for us to attend. It is not always
fun trying to please everyone (if that is even
possible) but kudos to those who try. Please
be sure to show your appreciation to those who
go the extra mile to make it fun for all of us.
Happy New Year to you all and bring on the
snow fun!
Keep smiling!

Giants Ridge Report
The Midwest Sport/
Ski Council once
again opened the
snow season with an
epic road trip to
Northern Minnesota.
A dozen or more Traverskis led the charge with
an 11 am departure from Rochester on Friday,
December 9. Libations featured a special run
of Traverski Badass Brew, and it was most
excellent. Thanks to brew master Brian,
marketing director Steve and quality control
manager Al. The ride also featured a
Caribbean theme and the word got around to
other clubs as some who boarded in
Minneapolis joined in the parrot theme.
Snow conditions were good upon arrival and
near excellent by Sunday with a couple inches
of fresh powder covering the groomed slopes.
The wine tasting, turtle races, human slalom
and other events were popular with a record
number of turtle race participants. Of note is
the new upscale restaurant /pub with
widescreen TVs next to the lodge. What would
have been an otherwise nondescript game
between a couple of Dakotas football teams
became the highlight of Saturday’s lunch.
Trish Reilly got a
wakeup call when she
unknowingly won the
poker run. In reality it
was more of a poker
walk as it was held
indoors prior to the
Saturday night banquet.
The game was Badugi, a
lowball twist where a
pair or two of one suit
essentially eliminates
one from competition.
For those who thought
they had good poker hands, eau contraire, the
meek shall inherit the earth. Congrats to Trish
for drawing the suckiest cards and walking
away with first prize.
Friday night featured a very good band that
played all original music. The keyboardist was
a bit overdressed and seemed a notch above
the rest as gig musicians go. He reminded me
of Rick Nielsen, the mastermind of Cheap
Trick, and likely the force majeure behind the
act. Of course we didn’t recognize the tunes
but all agreed it was most danceable.
A DJ cranked it up on Saturday night. It was
another good time and almost as if on cue, he
teed up “Little Willy” for a parting tribute to early
‘70s glam rock.
Survey results tallied after the trip indicate a
fairly strong preference to return to Giants
Ridge in the same timeframe next year. The
MSC trip organizers did a great job running a
near trouble-free weekend and we’ll look
forward to doing it again.

Skiing into the New Year... Spirit Mountain Day Trip!! Sitzmark (www.sitzmzrkmn.org), is once again inviting Traverski and other MSC members on a day trip to Spirit Mountain (www.spiritmt.com) in Duluth on Saturday, January 7, 2017 for just $59! Nonmembers may attend for $69. (This is just $10 more than the box office price adult weekend lift tickets which are $49!) This unbeatable price for a day of skiing includes the lift ticket, deluxe coach bus ride, a hearty breakfast and extra snacks (such as bread, meat, hard-boiled eggs, cheese, Nutella, bananas, orange juice, granola bars, fruit snacks, and more). Rentals and lessons are available for an extra fee (skis or boards; pay there... let me know when you sign up if you want lessons so they can have instructors available). In the past few years, we've had 60+ skiers each time (including many new people) and everyone wanted to go back again! We are also offering 10 lift ticket vouchers at $33 for people driving up on their own, which Sally Hed can mail to you in advance, or you can meet us at the mountain. These vouchers are good for any day this 2016/2017 season (redeem them at the ticket window or group office). You must be an MSC member to buy the voucher as it’s a special deal Sitzmark club got and they are not available for sale to the general public. Plan to wear your tie dyed Traverski bandana so we can find each other on the slopes! I'll have them available on the bus for purchase for $5 the day of the event. We will be boarding the bus at 7 am at the Honeywell parking lot (2600 Ridgway Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55413; park on the SW side of the complex by 35W). Get cozy as the bus will be full (50 people). We'll leave at 7:30 am sharp and serve breakfast once we get rolling; we plan to arrive at Spirit Mt around 10am.
Upon arrival, just gather your equipment and head to the Fireside Room (next to the Moosehead Lodge) to get your lift ticket, settle in, change clothes, and relax throughout the day (we reserved the room all day but cannot guarantee complete security). Pick up rentals and arrange lessons at the group office. For the return trip, the bus will board Spirit Mountain at 5 pm for a 5:30pm departure. We plan to be back to Honeywell around 8pm. This day trip will sell out fast, so sign up ASAP. To guarantee your seat, you must pay online: www.sitzmarkmn.org/skiing.html. We can discuss arranging carpooling from Rochester for the Traverski group and friends if we have significant numbers attending. I'm planning to stay up at Sally Hed's home the night before to prepare for the event.
