By eBike to the most beautiful spots in the shadow of the Watzmann. Interesting incidents from the history of a centu-ries-long dispute over salt. It is this very special mixture of culture and nature that has attracted people to Berchtesga-den for a long time and that has led us to rediscover this unique area for our eBikes. The impressive alpine scenery also remains in view when the rural hills of the Rupertiwinkel and Chiemgau literally „round off“ this journey: Monasteries such as Höglwörth, Seeon and Frauenchiemsee are on the way as well as picturesque little towns with a proud past, including Bad Reichenhall, Traunstein and Wasserburg. Ludwig Ganghofer would be delighted...

In the centrally located Hotel „Edelweiss“, the best house in Berchtesgaden, rooms are available from 14 o‘clock. At 17 o‘clock meeting in the hotel lobby for a detailed tour of the place. At 7 p.m. dinner in the much praised restaurant of the house.

1st day, Sunday: BGD – Kugelmühle – Schellenberg – Scheffau – Oberau – Königssee – BGD (40 km)After a hearty breakfast and the adjustment of the bikes, we will set off on an extensive round tour, during which our eBikes will provide one or the other view. At the exit of the Almbachklamm gorge is one of the once numerous „ball mills“, where since 1683 marbles have been cut from Untersberg marble, which in those days were shipped all over the world. From the Bavarian-Austrian

border town of Marktschellenberg, which used to be correspon-dingly strongly fortifi ed, the route takes you with an electric tail-wind via Scheffau (midday refreshment) and Obersalzberg up to Scharitzkehlstraße, which was built in the 1930s and fortunately never quite fi nished. With the imposing mountain massif of the Hoher Göll at your back, your gaze sweeps far across the Berch-tesgaden basin before a long descent leads past picturesque mountain farms to the shores of the Königssee. The usual bustle of the „Seelände“ can be quickly avoided via the dam of the his-toric railway line, which has been converted into a cycle path. For dinner today, the accompanying bus takes you to the moun-

tain inn „Vorderbrand“ at an altitude of 1070 m, where the land-lords Hildegard and Rüdiger Runge offer the best regional cuisine against a breathtaking backdrop.

2nd day, Monday: BGD – Bischofswiesen – Schwarzeck – Hintersee – Schönau – BGD (42 km)Today‘s round tour starts with a mountain stage to Schwarzeck via Bischofswiesen, where our eBikes can prove their efficiency. At the highest point of the route, you will touch the tiny ski area, which was created at the end of the 1960s by the former indus-trialist Willy Schlieker and is now a sympathetic reminder of the times. In front of the overwhelming panorama of the Watzmann, Hochkalter and Reiteralm, the route descends again to Hintersee, the destination of many artists in the 19th century.

From the entrance to the national park, a road closed to public traffic leads in a steady, easy uphill section into the Klausbach valley. With a view of the steep rock faces of the Reiteralm, also known as the „Ramsau Dolomites“ because of their imposing ap-pearance, you will learn interesting facts about this landscape, which was already placed under special protection in 1921 as the „Königssee Nature Reserve“. Today, the „Auzinger“ inn, well-known to friends of genuine folk music, serves as a lunch stop. Not only the roast pork from the 150-year-old wood-fired oven is an indicator of authentic Bavarian cuisine among locals. On the way back you pass the Ramsauer Kircherl, which is world-famous as a photo motif, before you continue on winding paths through Schönau and back to Berchtesgaden. Dinner at the restaurant of the „Edelweiss“.

3rd day, Tuesday: BGD – Bad Reichenhall – Höglwörth – Waging (62 km)With the silhouette of the „Sleeping Witch“ in front of your eyes, it is time to say goodbye to the Berchtesgadener Talkessel. Be-hind the remains of the border fortifications at Pass Hallthurm, the view widens to the Saalach Valley. The historical significance of the „white gold“ for this region is also reflected in the many place names that bear the salt in their names, either in the La-tin root „sal“ or the probably Celtic „hall“. The many castle ruins that surround the „salt-rich“ Reichenhall, which was named the „Royal Bavarian State Spa“ as early as 1899 because of its brine springs, should also be interpreted in this context. Behind the last mountain range of the Hohenstaufen, the gentle hills of the Ru-

pertiwinkel dominate the panorama. The name goes back to Saint Rupertus, the patron saint of the province of Salzburg. It was only in 1810 that this area was granted to the Kingdom of Bavaria. The former Augustinian monastery on a peninsula on the idyllic Höglwörther See is soon reached. Soon you will reach the former

Augustinian canons‘ monastery on a peninsula on idyllic Högl-wörth Lake. Today‘s stage continues via Teisendorf to Waging am See. Already around 500 AD, Baiuvarian tribes had recognized the beauty of the region around Lake Waging and settled here. The „Landhaus Tanner“ awaits the cyclists with a successful mixture of modernity and tradition. Dinner in the excellent restaurant of the house - prepared by the patron of the house and convinced slow food advocate Franz Tanner.

4th day, Wednesday: Waging – Pittenhart (40 km)From Waging, the route first leads through gently rolling hills and then along the Traun River to Stein, which boasts a special attrac-tion: The large caves formed in a vertical rock face about forty meters high were already used by the Celts as a place of refuge. In the Middle Ages, it was then expanded into the largest cave castle in Germany and further fortified to protect the salt trade through the Traun Valley and the river crossing.A picture-book route continues in the afternoon to Seeon Mo-nastery, founded by Benedictines as early as 994 and home to

a widely praised writing school. Today the building complex is owned by the district of Upper Bavaria and functions as a cultural and educational center. From there, we continue a little further to Pittenhart, where the successfully restored „Alte Zollstation“ serves as a noble hostel. Dinner in the respective hotel restaurant, both are of excellent quality.

6th day, Friday: Pittenhart – Wasserburg – Amerang – Pittenhart (56 km)The last day of cycling begins with a hilly stage without any signifi-cant traffic through a very rural landscape. After reaching the Inn, the route heads downstream, past the riverside forest designated as a „bird sanctuary“, into the water castle, which is well worth seeing. The small town is one of the most historical places in Old Bavaria, older than Munich, a good 50 kilometres to the west, always fought over by the owners of the Bavarian part duchies and equal in rights to the large residence towns. Its protected location on a peninsula surrounded by the River Inn made the city, fortified with walls and towers and dominated by the castle of the Hallgrafen, later the Wittelsbacher, almost impregnable.

On the stage back to Pittenhart, the Amerang Farmhouse Muse-um, set amidst gardens and orchards, offers interesting insights into the regional history, tradition and historical changes in socie-ty from early modern times to the present. For the final dinner you will find yourself back in the „Altes Zoll-haus“.

7th day, Saturday: DepartureAfter an eventful week full of impressions, our escort bus will take you to Rosenheim station. From there there are best connections within Germany and to Austria. If the car is still parked in Berch-tesgaden, you will be back on site in about 1.5 hours with a one-time change in Freilassing.

5th day, Thursday: Pittenhart – Urschalling – Prien – Herrenchiemsee – Frauenchiemsee – Gstad – Pittenhart (43 km)With the Eggstätter Seen, one of the most important „ice decay landscapes“ of the Bavarian Alpine foothills is on this morning‘s stage. A part of this lake district forms the oldest nature reserve in Bavaria. The route continues to Urschalling on a hill above Lake Chiemsee, an „Upper Bavarian jewel“ in terms of landscape and culture. The hamlet is grouped around the small Romanesque church of Sankt Jakobus, which is known above all for its extensi-vely preserved and original late Gothic painting. For example, the Holy Spirit was depicted as a woman in the Trinity fresco.

After a snack, you can take a boat from Prien to the island of Herrenchiemsee. In 1873, King Ludwig II of Bavaria acquired Her-reninsel as the site for his „New Herrenchiemsee Palace“, which can now be visited in detail. As a copy of Versailles, this castle was to become a „temple of glory“ for King Louis XIV of France, whom the Bavarian monarch adored without limits.Another short ship passage brings the cyclists to the Fraueninsel. Its character is completely different from that of the Herreninsel. It is much smaller, densely populated and manageable. Not a few painters and poets have been inspired in their creativity by the blooming and fragrant flower and herb gardens.Back on the mainland, the cycle route leads back to Pittenhart.
