Jane: My trailer is, well, you know how people have a nearly new car? I have a nearly new trailer. My bedroom is my trailer. If I was a plant I’d be a rose. If I was an animal I’d be a butterfly. If I was an object I’d be a prom dress. If I was a colour I’d be blue.

4 - Travelling Voices

Helen: I live in a big blue and white trailer with a small kitchen and a big TV. If I was a plant I would be a stinging nettle. If I was an animal I would be a tortoise because they have a long lifetime. If I was an object I’d be a light because I go on and off and if I go into a dark room I can make it light. If I was a colour I’d be purple because it’s the colour of light and a tortoise mixed together.

Bridget: I live on a site in a trailer with big curtains, brown settees, lino on the floor. If I was a plant I’d be a rose. If I was an animal I’d be a dolphin. If I were an object I’d be a window because it lets in lots of light, you can open and close it and you can see through but also draw curtains across it. If I was a colour I’d be pink.

Alice: I live in a white trailer. It’s white and green inside. If I was a plant I’d be a pink rose. If I was an animal I’d be a cat. If I was an object I’d be a pair of shoes. If I was a colour I’d be pink.

Maryann: I live in a trailer that’s silver outside and cream and gold inside. If I was a plant I’d be a daffodil. If I was an animal I’d be a pink butterfly. If I was an object I’d be a pink Range Rover with cream leather seats. If I was a colour I’d be baby pink.

Laura Jane: I live in a very old and pink trailer. If I was a plant I’d be a yellow rose. If I was an animal I’d be a pink butterfly. If I was an object I’d be a pair of Ed Hardy jeans. If I was a colour I’d be pink.

Darren: I live in a big long ugly pink thing. If I was a plant I’d be a daffodil. If I was an animal I’d be a carp. If I was an object I’d be a knuckle duster. If I was a colour I’d be pink.

Rhodeann: I live in a trailer that’s silver outside and cream and gold inside. If I was a plant I’d be a pink rose. If I was an animal I’d be a dog cos I’ve got a bark like a dog. If I was an object I’d be a pink Volkswagen Golf with cream seats. If I was a colour I’d be baby blue.

Bridget: Me and my best friend are on a party ship. We dance till we drop. At the party is Justin Bieber, he was going to sing but there’s a screaming baby and as he was trying to sing there was a man that pushed everyone out.

Helen: Walking on the sand feels like sponge. Walking along the sand bare foot, sand goes between your toes. It’s so nice and different and when you put your feet in the water and the sand is all sticky and ugly but nice and good and when the sand is really hot it burns your feet.

Rhodeann: Me and my cousin Laura are on the beach with a bikini and we are taking it easy and we are going swimming later and we are drinking blue WKD and I’m listening to Beyonce on my phone and we’re eating strawberries and tonight we’re going to a party on a ship and I’m going to wear a pair of pink leather trousers and a pink belly top and a pair of pink shoes and we are trying to find some showers and get ready for a good night.

Maryann: Me and Alice are walking along the beach eating an ice cream with the sound of the birds whistling. We are going to chill on the beach and have a sunbathe. Alice is rubbing cream on my back. We’re chilling to Akon, drinking cocktails and it tastes like strawberry. We’re gonna go for a fish and chip supper tonight.

Darren: One sunny day I was fishing at the Barrier Reef and I had a big bite. It was a shark. As I was reeling it in I heard a noise in the background. It was the Barrier Reef keeper. He shouted “No fishing!” and I said “Okay, wait till I get this shark” and he shouted “What? A shark? Please get it away from my Barrier Reef!”

Alice: Me and Maryann is walking along the beach eating Vanilla ice cream with the sound of birds whistling. We’re going to chill on the beach and have a sunbathe. Maryann is putting cream on my back and listening to Akon and drinking cocktails that taste like strawberries. It’s pink with umbrellas and a straw hanging over the side. We’re going for a fish and chip supper tonight.

Jane: The ship is on the water. I can see people dancing, kissing, flirting, laughing, drinking. I want to be on the ship. I am stuck on the beach.

Laura Jane: Me and my cousin Rhodeann are sunbathing on the beach and we are talking about climbing the mountains later and we are listening to 50 Cent on my phone and we are eating oranges off the trees and tonight we are going to a party on a ship and I am going to wear a pink dress and pink shoes and we are going to find some showers.

Annalise: I can see people dancing on the ship. They are laughing, drinking, fighting. I close my eyes and I am on the ship.

Annalise: I used to live in an Avondale trailer on a site, but I live in a house nearby now. My bedroom is cluttered with pictures of my family. If I was a plant I’d be a red rose. If I was an animal I’d be a tiger. If I was an object I’d be a picture of a spider. If I were a colour I’d be red.

Theresa: I was born on the 17August 1994 near London. I livein Lincoln in a house. I used tolive in a Hobby. My bedroom iscream with pictures of Martin, tidy, double bed, wardrobe, agrown up bedroom. I woulddescribe myself as tall, helpful, pretty, kind, hard-working.If I was a plant or flower,I would be a Rose (red). If I was an animal, Iwould be a rabbit. If I was anobject, I would be a photo. If Iwas a colour, I would be blue.

Theresa: ‘Walking along the sand in bare feet it goes between your toes and it feels so nice and different. The sun hits your face with the hot heat and while you walk along the sand your feet feel so free and the sand being so hot under your feet you know there is no other place to be free and happy instead of walking along the road in a pair of shoes. Without the shoes it’s so special.’

We work with Travellers; young Travellers and adult Travellers. We offer advice, support, educational opportunities; skills that help them get through life, sometimes simply through the day.

Six months ago ten young Travellers signed up to a programme of learning unlike anything they had ever done before. They committed themselves to attending regular combined arts activities for at least three months; activities that would see them participate in creative writing workshops, Raqs Sharqi, Fashion Design and attending live arts events. In doing so they embarked on a Bronze Arts Award, a nationally accredited qualification. This book is one part of what they have achieved. Darren, the only boy in the group, and Helen worked on not only the editing of this publication but the liaising with designers and printers; they helped shape the design of the publication, and at the same time the proof-reading. Everyone has achieved so much. We have all been on quite a journey.

Rhodeann and Laura Jane: Me and my cousin went to New York for a holiday. We were very happy. When we got out of the airport it was raining so we got our umbrella out. Rhodeann was wearing an orange raincoat. It is only 1’o’clock in the afternoon, we need some food. We get a yellow cab into the city.

Alice and Maryann: My name is Alice. Me and Maryann and Darren went to New York on a holiday to chill on the beach. We were getting ready to go to a club when we saw Akon and he gave us a rose and it was yellow. We were drinking Vodka and Coke with ice in it. The music was very loud and the club was packed and we were dancing. We woke up the next day, it was very sunny, we went to a cafe and had chips and nuggets. Then we went shopping and bought some new shoes and a yellow handbag. Then we went into a shop and gave a kid £2 for a can of Red Bull. We saw a baby eating ice cream. She had it all the way around her mouth.

Bridget and Theresa: Bridget and Theresa were travelling to Edinburgh drinking a can of Red Bull. It was very sunny. It was Bridget’s birthday. She got a rabbit for her birthday, Theresa got her a bag. On the way we met our old teacher and also saw a man eating an Easter Egg. He had a gold book in his hand. We were wearing new hats.Theresa was missing home but then the most amazing thing happened – we saw a shooting star.

Theresa: My earliest memory of food is pasta. Mum’s best dish is Sunday dinner – roast potatoes, chicken, peas, carrots, Yorkshire pudding, gravy. I don’t know of any recipes that have been passed down my family. My favourite food is sweetcorn because it’s very tasty. It’s yellow and round and smells sweet. I hate Brussels sprouts, they’re horrible, they smell like old feet and they look like little balls of grass. I have never had but would like to try lobster. I would never eat insects, rabbit or frog.

Bridget: I don’t remember my first memory of food. My mum’s best dish is spaghetti because I like the taste of the sauce. It’s my favourite food, it’s red and smells like tomatoes. I hate soup, it’s runny and doesn’t taste good. I would never eat lobster, snails or shark.

Jane: My earliest memory of food is boiled bacon, potatoes, cabbage and carrots. My favourite food is corned beef because it’s really nice. It tastes good, smells handsome and looks very good. I hate pasta.

Alice: My earliest memory of food is boiled bacon and potatoes. I love corned beef, it tastes nice and looks good. I hate pasta because I don’t like touching it, I don’t like the way it feels. I would never eat snails or eggs.

WHAT DID YOUR MAMMY COOK?Annalise: Annalise went to Alaska in winter. In Alaska it’s winter all the time. It is very cold. Annalise lived there in an igloo. She met some Eskimos and ate fish with them the whole day.

I hate Brussels sprouts, they’re horrible, they smell like old feet and they look like little balls of grass.

Chipmunk/Skepta/Tinie Tempah/Tenny Ten (aka 10Shott) @ The Plug, Sheffield, 02.03.10

Jane:

On the day of the concert I felt very, very happy. I wore a white top and white shoes. We went with Sam. The Plug was sold out, the music was loud, the club was packed and it was really good. The rest of the audience were dancing. I stood at the front. I liked Chipmunk the best. If the concert was a colour it would be blue and red.

Helen :

Paul got us from Lincoln and we got lost going to Sheffield. David was on the phone, telling us where to go. I had an orange dress on, Theresa had white and Bridget had green. Theresa’s mammy was phoning her all the time!

We’d never been to Sheffield before... not on our own... It was loud, the club was small and dark... We took photo’s and videoed the concert. Tinie Tempah was good, but Chipmunk was better.

I remember blue and the long drive home. It was a nice night.

50 Cent, Manchester Arena, 25.03.10

Laura Jane, Maryann, Rhodeann:

When we woke up we felt on top of the world, very excited. We all wore different things; Maryann wore shorts, leggings and a belly top, Rhodeann wore shorts too but a different top. We went with the girls on a mini bus to Manchester. Before we went in, Laura Jane was talking to 50 Cent’s driver. He was a steroid freak! When we went inside there was about 2000 people there. It wasn’t as loud as the Chipmunk concert. The rest of the audience were dressed up but they looked like clowns, jumping up and down they were, like monkeys! We sat in the middle, we could see 50 Cent, but not his face. We danced, but Darren was a bit shy to get up and dance. The best bit was when 50 Cent came out, cos we’d been waiting a long time. The best songs he did were Window Shopper and Baby By Me. He did a 2 hour set. He was better than Chipmunk by a long chance. It was like a man (50 Cent) and a boy (Chipmunk). If the concert was a colour it would be Blue (Laura Jane), Pink because it made me feel good (Maryann), Blue because I like the lighting (Rhodeann). We got home about 1.30am. Rhodeann was buzzin’, she wouldn’t shut up about the concert!

The rest of the audience were dressed up but they looked like clowns, jumping up and down they were, like monkeys!

Helen :

He’s not really my idol but Chipmunk is really good and I like his songs. Can we go see him? Chipmunk’s a good singer, but I really like the girl singer in his music. His songs tell you stories, sad stories. He’s from London, his real name is Jamaal. He’s won lots of awards. I’d like to sing in his songs.

Page 8: Travelling Voices

My name is Darren Biddle. I was born 14 June 1995 in Gainsborough. I live on Summergangs Lane with my family. There’s a site there. We’re all Romany Gypsies there. My mother’s name is Dawn. She is a proud Romany Gypsy. She knows a lot about Romany things. Universities have travelled to interview her. I told Chris and asked him if he wanted to talk to my mum. Chris said I should interview my mum.

On Monday 3 May I worked on writing questions to ask my mum. The next day I asked the school if I could have a room to interview her. On Friday 7 May 2010 at 10.30 I interviewed my Mum. David recorded it twice.

The week after I sat down with David and we watched and wrote the interview. Here it is.

Darren: When and where were you born?

Dawn: I was born in south Yorkshire in 1968.

Darren:Where were you brought up?

Dawn: Well, I was brought up with me mum and dad…and me granny in Yorkshire and then Lincolnshire and then Yorkshire again... vice versa… back and forth…and when the fruit started we’d go to Ipswich, Norfolk… we’d pick the fruit with your granny and grandad…

Darren: Tell me about your childhood/upbringing.

Dawn: I was brought up with me brother Darren and me sister Jane and me granny and grandad... and me uncles and me aunts… we were all brought up together…travelling… moving…doing the fruit.

Darren: Did your grandparents speak Romany during daily life?

Dawn: Me dad did…and me grandad.

Darren: Did they bring your parents up speaking Romany?

Dawn: Me dad spoke Romany when I was little but me mum never did, she was deaf and dumb.

Darren: Were you brought up speaking Romany?

Dawn: Yeah, your grandad brought me up speaking it. Yeah… Yeah… it’s important to me to pass on the Romany language and culture to me family, yeah, it is… I want my kids to learn it.

Darren: Are there many Romany speakers in Lincolnshire/East Midlands? If not, does it concern you that you might be the last line of being Romany in this area?

Dawn: Yeah, there are quite a few speaking Romany language around Lincolnshire… and in Leicester and, of course, Yorkshire.

Darren: What can you tell me about being Romany? How do you feel about being Romany?

Dawn: I’m proud to be an English Gypsy… a Romany.

Darren: What specific traditions are part of the Romany culture? For example, marriage, food, christenings, religious beliefs, celebrations etc.

Dawn: When... um… well, when somebody dies all your family… um.. your family turn up and you tend to have a big funeral… And food, well, you have boiled bacon and cabbage… and a meat pudding.

Darren: What is your understanding of the origins of Romany coming from India?

Dawn: I was led… your granny and grandad always told me that Romany’s came from India. That’s where we got our language.

Darren: Is there prejudice against Romany Gypsies? If so, why?

Dawn: Yeah… there is prejudice amongst Romany Gypsies… and why… I...well, I don’t know the answer to that... I don’t… is that OK?

Darren: Do Romany Gypsies have prejudice against other groups? If so, why?

Dawn: Yeah… yeah they are... it’s a vice versa thing. All travellers don’t get on… they don’t.

Darren: Are you aware of any relatives living in Europe today?

Dawn: Yeah... Me husband has…

Darren: What do you think are the main differences between the different Gypsy groups?

Dawn: There’s Scots and Welsh and of course, the Irish and the English Gypsies.

Darren: Do you have any photographs of your family that you might share with this project?

Dawn: Yeah I got quite few at home.

They were the best granny and grandad in the world.

I really, really miss them. God bless granny and grandad. I will hold you forever in my heart.

My grandad was a very good man and my granny was a very good woman.

She was deaf and dumb but it was no problem for her.

My granny went to a deaf and dumb school from the age of 4 and left school at the age of 16.

She fell in love with my grandad at 18. They had 3 kids, they lived a very happy life and then in 2004 my granny died.

We are a close family and I really do miss my granny.

A Dedication For My Granny And Grandad

JaneMy grandad had a wagon made for my granny, he got her the wagon but she died five months later.

My granny was a very well known woman.

My last Christmas with my grandad was in 2006. We had a very good Christmas with my grandad.

I used to tell my grandad every day it was my birthday and he would give me money.

My grandad died in 2007.

He died of a broken heart; he couldn’t live without his Maria.

They were the best granny and grandad in the world.

I really, really miss them. God bless granny and grandad. I will hold you forever in my heart.

The Twins Holy Communion by Theresa

It was a big day for the twins because it was their Holy Communion Day where they got to wear their new dresses that their Auntie made them. They were a dark grey with white frills at the top, white tights and hair bands that their mother gave them to own.

So they went to the church and when they got there their father wanted to take a picture of them inside but before the picture was taken they were talking to their friends Emma and Alice. They were the same age as Margaret and Sarah, 11. They were also in the same school as them and they’d been friends for two years. They all go to the bowling alley every week.

They were glad when the Holy Communion was over so they could all go home for a cup of cocoa.

Jamaica Jane by Jane

My name is Jane. I’m going on holiday to Jamaica. My cousin Nathan lives there, in a caravan on the beach.

The Heat rises off the road, wobbling like jelly.

Sitting on the beach, the sun sets like a red apple.

Akon was touring in Jamaica, I saw him working out on the beach. He seemed lonely, so he started singing “Mister Lonely”.

He had a voice like an angel.

18 - Travelling Voices

Theresa : At the end of the rainbow there is a leprechaun with a pot of gold. When you get up close and touch this pot of gold you are given magical powers.

Theresa/Bridget: I was walking down the street the other day when I saw a small wooden box by the side of the road. Suddenly, I heard a voice say “Help! Get me out of here!” The voice was coming from inside the box. I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to rush and get help from someone who would be able to help whoever was in the box. And I really wanted to find out who was in the box and why they were there.

I’m the underground king But I ain’t been crowned You wanna watch what you say about me Else you’ll be found, cos I’m all around Now I got blood in my eye, dog I can’t see Gonna put you down, man For messin’ wit’ me.
