Why we are thinking abouttravel

Travel and transport are changing fast.Soon there will be lots of new ways forpeople and goods to move around.

People are changing.

There are more older people. Youngerpeople choose to travel differently.

Businesses are also changing and usingnew ideas to help them move goods fromplace to place.

Page 11: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

8

Everyone wants good, safe transport thatdoes not pollute the air around roads andrailway lines.

This means we need to think differentlyabout the services people will need in thefuture.

Technology means travel is quicker andeasier for some people – but how do wemake sure other people do not miss out?

We think the biggest changes will be inour cities.

Page 12: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

9

We also need to think about how changeswill affect people and businesses all overBritain. We need rules and laws to keeppeople safe and make sure the changeswork for everyone.

This is your chance to tell us what thesechanges mean for you and help us planfor the future.

Part 1. Our plan for travelin cities

What is changing

The way people work, shop and dobusiness affects what happens withtransport:

older people drive more but feweryounger people drive

more people use the train andunderground

more people are working from home

Page 14: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

11

● there are more vans on the roads.

These things will probably not changemuch:

main roads and buildings in cities willmostly stay the same

how we plan cities will affect howmuch people need to travel

most journeys in cities will be short

how many people travel in each carand the fuel people use will affecttraffic jams and pollution.

Page 15: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

12

What might happen in the future

technology and new ways of workingare starting to completely change theway people and goods move around.

The changes include:

cleaner transport with more cars andvans that do not pollute the air

more automatic transport like carsthat can drive themselves

vehicles that connect to the internetcould control traffic lights and helpdrivers keep moving

Page 16: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

13

new ways of moving around likeelectric bikes or drones to carry parcels

more people using technology to linkwith other people to share bikes, carsor taxis

more people using smartphonesto plan, book and pay for transport

more people thinking about transportas a service that can get them wherethey need to be, instead of owningtheir own car.

14

We must make sure people trust thesethings to work properly.

The law must still protect people if theway they travel changes.

Our questions about these changes

1. Are there any other types oftechnology that will affect travelin cities?

2. What changes do we need to make toroads, streets and railways to help ususe technology?

Page 18: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

15

3. How do you think these changes willaffect cities?

4. What problems might these changescause that the government shouldwatch out for?

What we plan to do

We think these changes will help morepeople be involved in their communitiesand give everyone better transport.

We will listen to what people tell us.

Page 19: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

16

But these are some things we think weneed to do:

make sure transport works foreveryone, especially older people orpeople with disabilities. Our InclusiveTransport plan is about this

make it easy for people to walk orcycle short journeys or as part ofa longer journey. Our Cycling andWalking plan says how we will do this

find out what people need and helpthem understand how technology canhelp them get around

help people get ready for the changes. Some people’s jobs might change andmore people with disabilities can getjobs. Our Industrial plan says how wewill help people improve their skills

Page 20: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

17

● work with local councils to help themplan for transport in the future.

Our questions about what we needto do

5. We want transport to work foreveryone. What can the governmentdo to make sure that happens?

6. How can the government make suretransport in cities supports people andcommunities?

7. How can the government help peopleunderstand new technology andtransport services?

Page 21: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

18

8. How do you think these changes willaffect jobs? How can the governmentsupport people and businesses whoare affected by the changes?

9. What else should the government doto help people, businesses and citiesget ready for the changes?

19

Part 2. Travel in the future –the Grand Challenge

In this part we are asking about transportall over the country, not just in cities.

The Grand Challenge will help us be one ofthe best countries in the world for newideas in transport.

We need to think about ‘missions’ – bigplans to aim for that will help us come upwith new and exciting ideas.

These will include things like:

● making cars that do not pollute the air

Page 23: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

20

making streets safer

making it easier for everyone to usetransport

cleaner ways to move goods andparcels around the country

cities that are nicer to live in.

Our questions about ‘missions’

10. Which of these ‘missions’ would helppeople come up with new ideas?

Page 24: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

21

11. How should the government spend itsmoney to help companies come upwith new ideas for transport?

As transport changes we must make sureour laws do not stop people using newideas like drones or cars without drivers.

One of the first things we will do is look atall our laws to see what needs to change.

Our questions about laws

12. Which laws need to change to help ususe new technology but also keeppeople safe?

Page 25: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

22

13. How can we make it easier for peoplewith new ideas for transport to workwith the people who make the rules?

We need good information to help us plantransport. We must get better at sharingand using information.

Our questions about sharinginformation

14. What else can the government do tomake it easier to share informationsafely?

Anything else?

15. Is there anything else you want to sayabout the future of transport?

Page 26: Travelling in Britain in the future - tell us what you think · the best countries in the world for new ideas in transport. ... Travelling around easily. Pollute. Put something poisonous

23
