.
Sally Denning’s sister, Nancy Jenkins, died May
22nd
.
Iris Andrews died on May 24th
in Florida.
We continue to keep these families in our prayers:
Bible Studies to Break for Summer…plans
underway for fall
Companions in Christ and our Sunday evening
Bible Study will take a break over the summer
months and will resume in September.
Annual Congregational Meeting
The congregational meeting to elect a new slate of
officers will be held on Sunday, June 5th
at 9:30
a.m. in the fellowship hall. Newly elected officers
will begin their terms on July 1st. Also at this
meeting, we will learn about plans for the church
playground. You will want to be present to hear the
report of our Playground Task Force. Join us.
Elders Meeting
Mark your calendars for next Elder’s meeting on
June 12th
at 9:30 a.m. At this meeting we will plan
our schedule, orient newly elected Elders, thank out
going Elders and take care of a few other items.
Please plan to be there. We will meet in the
Sanctuary. If for some reason you cannot be
present, please let Dawn or Jason Kehrberg know.
We will be putting together the elder schedule for
the 2016-17 year and need your input.
146th
Anniversary Celebration
In our worship services on Sunday, May 22nd
we
lifted up the 146th
Anniversary of our congregation.
During the 8:30
service we had a
special
presentation
making Virgil
Untied Deacon
Emeritus. Virgil
has served many,
many terms as
Deacon, has
provided leadership for the Diaconate and is always
present and willing to serve in whatever way he can.
Thank you Virgil!
At both of our services that day we had the privilege
of sharing with Callie Buchanan. Callie is a 7th
grader at Zanesville Middle School and as a school
assignment wrote an essay for The Laws of Life
essay contest sponsored by the Ohio Better
Business Bureau. Callie’s essay was selected as
winner locally and then it went on to be part of a
regional competition where out of 1500 essays; hers
was chosen as the Second Place Overall Winner. In
her essay, she wrote about going with the youth
group to serve at Christ’s Table and what she
learned from that experience. She shared her essay
as part of the message during both services.
We continue to trust God’s guidance as we move in
ministry and mission into our 147th
year of service
in Jesus’ name.
Reminder from the Finance Committee Each year we develop our church budget based on
the giving estimates we receive on Consecration
Sunday. Many of you travel and find yourself away
from home during the summer months. We still
depend upon your financial support which
undergirds our ministry and mission here at FCC.
Thank you for your continued support.
The Z-Disciple JUNE 2016
Warning: Church Choirs Appear on the
Endangered Species List!
According to an article on the Religious News
Service web site (9/2014), church choirs are in
serious decline. In 1998, 78% of mainline
congregations heard a choir sing during the worship
service each week while only 50% had a regular
choir every week in 2012. This decline is expected
to continue mainly due to lack of resources; both
choir members and funds to purchase music and pay
choir directors and accompanists.
Despite these statistics, First Christian has enjoyed a
strong commitment to choir music in our worship.
We are blessed with anywhere from 15 to 18
singers each week willing to prepare an anthem and
share it on Sunday to the glory of God.
We are always looking for new members to join the
choir. We have “low impact” rehearsals each
Wednesday night from 7:00 until 8:00 pm in the
church sanctuary. Our choir prides itself in being
able to perform anthems in four part harmony with
occasional volunteer soloists. The choir season runs
approximately from Memorial Day through Labor
Day with summers off. If you are able to read music
and enjoy singing, please consider this an invitation
to join us this Fall when we regroup for another
season.
Benefits to becoming a choir member:
We provide you with music in a shiny black
folder.
You have a reserved seat each week close to
the front.
You have available an unlimited supply of
breath mints.
You will not be required to wear a heavy
robe made of leftover insulated drapery
material.
There is a strong chance you will have fun
with others who love to sing to the glory of
God.
See Tim Remster for details.
Worship Schedule for June, July & August Join us this summer as we gather for worship on
Sundays at 8:30 & 10:30 a.m.
and on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. in our chapel.
Summer Sunday School will take place for all ages
at 9:30 a.m.
(in addition, a special Adult study will be held in
August)
Thank You Choir!
The Chancel Choir will take a
respite for the summer months.
We thank the choir members for
their faithful service in lifting the
congregation in praise and
worship each week. Thanks also
to Susan Davis and Tim Remster for their tireless
leadership and enthusiasm. We will be blessed by
gifts of special music from our members and friends
that will inspire our worship during the summer
months (you won’t want to miss this). Thanks also
to those who serve in our chime choir. We are
blessed by the gifts that our musicians share!

Blessings bestowed
When author Gary Smalley asked 100 people to
share how they knew they’d received their parents’
blessing, they offered these memories of fatherly
love:
• My father put his arm around me at church and let
me lay my head on his shoulder.
• When I wrecked my parents’ car, my father’s first
reaction was to hug me and let me cry instead of
yelling at me.
• My father went with me to the store when I had to
return a purchase I regretted.
• My father let me practice pitching to him for a
long time after work.
• My father cried during my wedding because he
was going to miss me being at home.
Board Highlights—May 12, 2016
Meeting opened by Moderator Bill Factor,

needed in the way of space. Bill Factor will

leadership as Board Moderator for the last
two years.

Vacation Bible School
Families mark your calendars for June 13-17 when your children are invited to

experience how God used Joseph to save a nation. We will travel back into
Bible times and see, hear, touch and taste what it was like to live in Egypt.
We will explore the Marketplace Shops, visit Joseph, play fun games, dance
to lively dance songs and sample tasty tidbits as we discover more about
Joseph’s journey. Be sure to invite your friends now and let them know that
every family that registers by June 10th will receive a free CD of the VBS
music! Registration forms are in this newsletter and also available in the literature rack outside the church
office.
Vacation Bible School....You Can Still Help! Although VBS is just right around the corner, it is not too late for you to lend a hand! Here are a few ways you
can still be a part of this important ministry:
Our Tent Hosts and Tribe Leaders could use an assistant to help. You would not have to lead activities,
but offer an extra set of hands and a smiling face. Contact Kim Paul, 221-1305 if you would like to be
an assistant.
Help the decorating committee set up decorations on June 12th.
Sign up to make a donation. There is a donation board outside the Chapel. Take a look and see what
treasure you can share! We will be in special need of canopy tents, greenery, rugs, vases, and pots for
decorating our Marketplace.
Meeting for VBS Volunteers There will be a meeting for all VBS volunteers on Thursday, June 2nd at 6:30. At this meeting all
volunteers will have an opportunity to pick out a costume for the week, receive Leader Manuals, finalize details,
and have questions answered. Please let Kim Paul know if you will not be able to attend this important
meeting. Any VBS volunteer that has not had Child Protection Plan training should come at 6 pm.

Feeling at Home May 24, 2016
by Kristin Wolf, Global Mission Intern with Global Ministries, a program supported by Week of Compassion
Working for Global Ministries has been one of the most exhilarating and rewarding experiences of my life. I
have been working in Chiang Mai, Thailand as a Global Missions Intern, a program funded by Week of
Compassion. I would first like to thank you! Yes, you! Because of people like you and churches like yours who
support Week of Compassion and Global Ministries, missionaries, interns, and volunteers are sent to live and
work abroad growing in discipleship and sharing our love of Christ all over the world.
I work at the Institute of Religion, Culture & Peace at Payap University. My work involves marketing and event
coordination for the IRCP. The IRCP's primary goals are to foster increased mutual appreciation and
cooperation among the world's different religious communities, thus contributing to greater inter-religious and
intra-religious understanding among all people everywhere, and to undertake and develop new ways to carry out
peacemaking and peacebuilding efforts in Thailand, the ASEAN region, and throughout the world.
The Institute employs various opportunities to reach these goals. There are regular Peace Studies seminars and
lectures that offer roadmaps on the journey of understanding. There are cultural training courses lasting as short
as 1-2 weeks, semester study programs, and in partnership with the International College at Payap, a PhD in
Peace Studies.
Recently, we celebrated the Thai New Year known as Song Kran. The sprinkling of water at the start of the
New Year is a blessing and ritual of good fortune. The water is supposed to be used to cleanse images of
Buddha, making it holy, and then that water is poured out onto others. It has now turned into somewhat of a
national water fight, while still holding great significance to Thai people. Song Kran had people gathered out in
the streets with giant tubs filled with water, swimming pools, squirt guns, and buckets. There were filling
stations for everyone to fill their soakers with water. Some people put ice into their tubs, which was jarring
initially, but a huge blessing in the 109 degree heat. Babies, teens, adults, and elders participate and celebrate
this holiday honoring their faith, family, friends, and the elements. I loved seeing the joy on the faces of the
Thai people who were delighted to share their tradition with a foreigner.
As my friends and I broke down for lunch, we watched a father with his three children stand by the side of the
road. The kids filled their buckets with water out of a huge cooler and drenched anyone who dared pass them.
The oldest son caught me taking their photo and threw up a giant peace sign and a huge smile.
This foreigner is starting to feel at home.
