The Race to Find a CureMore than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and tens of thousands are expected to lose their lives to the disease.

While these numbers may seem overwhelming, there is something we can actively do to help find a cure: Participate in walks/runs across the country and abroad that benefit breast cancer research.

We’ll provide you with a step-by-step guide to signing up and participating in a race to honor or support a loved one with breast cancer.

Find a Race

Page 4: Travel for a Cause

Setting out on a sports vacation – such as a trip to another country for a walk/run race –is a little different than your average vacation. In addition to booking flights and overnightaccommodations, you also have to think about the adjustment period you’ll undergo toget acclimated to a new climate and elevation – especially since you’ll be exertingyourself physically during the trip.

Also, having invested much time and money into participating in a race, it’s important tohave a plan in place in case the race were to get canceled due to unforeseencircumstances, or you are no longer able to participate due to an injury.

If you purchase RoamRight’s Active plan travel insurance package, your sports vacationwill have the protection you want. If your trip is cancelled or interrupted due to a coveredreason, you are protected for the costs of unused non-refundable deposits and paymentsthat were arranged separately from the vacation.

Many walks/runs that benefit cancer allow you to participate in teams. This is agreat way to get family and friends involved and create a team to honor orsupport your loved one who has been diagnosed with cancer. So tell your auntto dust off that ’80s sweat band she used to wear. It’s time to get moving.

After you’ve organized your team, make your old English teacher proud bychoosing a creative team name. If possible, try to incorporate the nameof your loved one into it such as:

• Donna’s Fantastic Four (… or Five … or Six)• Donna Would Want You To Run Faster• Donna Says “Eat My Dust”

Be a Team Player

Now that you have your team name, it’s time to get crafty. Head to your nearestcraft store to buy the following:

• T-shirts (avoid black, as it absorbs heat, and make sure to read each race’s T-shirt rules, as some reserve the color pink for survivors only)

• Iron-on alphabet letters, with enough letters to spell out your team name on each participant’s shirt

• If you really want to go over-the-top, order screened T-shirts with the goofiest photo you can find of your loved one.

Many race teams also like to get really creative with what they wear to the race.Think pink wigs, pink tutus or pink leggings. Anything goes, but keep in mind, whatever you wear, you will be wearing for the entire duration of your race.Make sure it’s not something that will weigh you down, or rub uncomfortablyagainst your skin.

Dress the Part

• While many of these walks/runs aren’t competitive, some cover a greater distance than others. If you’ve signed up for a race that covers a distance you haven’t ran or walked before, consider signing up for a training program that will build your endurance to the level it needs to be at in order to successfully complete the race.

• Encourage other team members to join a training program with you, so that everyone is prepared for what to expect on the day of the race.

Train for the Race

Page 8: Travel for a Cause

Race days are filled with excitement and, concurrently, manydistractions. Here are some ways to be prepared:

• Map out directions to the race beforehand, and if you’re unfamiliar with the area, you may even want to make the trip ahead of time to get an idea of how long it will take to get there.

• If you’re driving to the race, keep in mind there may be unexpected traffic or delays in finding a parking space. Leave early to compensate.

• Eat right the night before the race, such as a bowl of healthy whole wheat pasta, light on the sauce.

• Set out everything you need for the race-day the night before so you’re not scrambling to get ready on race day.

Plan Ahead

Whether you’re traveling overseas or down the street for the race, make sure you bring these items with you on the day of the race:

Bib number Identification Race chip (used for timed races only and is typically provided by the

organization hosting the event) An anti-chafe balm to protect your skin during long-distance races Water to drink and dispose of pre-race (most races will provide this

during and after the race as well)

Race Day Checklist

Now that you’ve finished the race, it’s time to re-hydrate and celebrateall that you’ve accomplished at the race’s after-party. Take a group photo that you can later print, frame and give to the person you’re there to celebrate. This is a great memento to remind your loved one that, although she may havebeen the one diagnosed with breast cancer, she is not walking alone on herroad to recovery.
