Harrison Industries continues to lead the ecological charge, achieving well beyond carbon

neutrality in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. According to the latest Climate Registry and Avoided Emissions Reporting, Harrison Industries “has fully offset its direct GHG emissions 18 times – well beyond net zero.”

Notably, Harrison now has 60 clean-air vehicles in its truck fleet - 30 each of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks, including 12 new CNG trucks. And the company has vowed to buy only CNG vehicles going forward.

So impressed was The Climate Registry with Harrison’s numbers that it recently named the company Member of the Month. Each month, one Registry member is recognized for commitment to emissions reporting and leadership in taking action on climate change; Harrison is the first-ever waste hauler to be distinguished with this Member of the Month commendation.

The world of recycling has changed dramatically and thrown us, locally

and globally, into a profound period of adjustment.

Most significantly, China has gone from receiving nearly all of our recycled goods for decades to tightening restrictions to the point of receiving almost none, effective this year.

“China is done,” said Danny Marks, CEO of Berg Mill Supply Co., the materials broker for Gold Coast Recycling in Ventura. “We had a good 25-30-year run with China and that’s no longer the case. By the end of 2020, 95 percent of what used to go to China will be banned.”

Berg Mill, a highly respected Los Angeles-based firm founded in 1962, did see this coming and was able to work with Gold Coast to develop international markets outside of China “for many years to come,” Marks said. “Not many others can say the same.” However, those markets are not paying well, if at all.

There’s also an eye on the domestic recycling industry, said George Harrison, general manager of Gold Coast. “The thinking is that the U.S. markets are going to have to come back,” Harrison said. “We do sell (recycled material) overseas, to Vietnam, Malaysia, South Korea … but the U.S. really needs to step it up. I’m pretty confident we will. The technology is out there. Somebody’s just got to spend the money.”

High Ranking

“Our low emissions numbers are remarkable but not unexpected,” said Harrison’s Nan Drake. “We have a well-tracked history of avoided emissions and following all of the protocol. We see this as our greatest responsibility and our greatest success as a trash/recycle company.”

Drake added, “We at Harrison are very proud of our annual high ranking on The Climate Registry,

recently oversaw a major equipment upgrade at Gold Coast. After a four-month-long installation/transition process, the new sorting and baling system is in place, and there’s already been a dramatic improvement in efficiencies.

“The machinery is doing great,” George Harrison said. “We can run the new system much faster and cleaner. As a result, our monthly average diversion is significantly better than before and the cleaner material is far more acceptable for the marketplace.”

With an eye to a brighter future, Gold Coast encourages its customers to maintain their excellent recycling habits, and the company continues to work with Edgar & Associates, a Sacramento-based environmental engineering and lobbying firm, to make sure the recycling industry’s voice is being heard.

Of course, everything in this scenario costs money; the inevitable budget increases also are forefront on the minds of recyclers everywhere. “It’s a tough time,” George Harrison said, “but we’ll get through it.”

Recycling Q&A for Businesses

In California, state laws

require all commercial and multifamily units to recycle. Here are frequently asked questions and answers about our state recycling regulations:

Is recycling mandatory? Yes, California Assembly Bill 341 requires all businesses and apartment complexes to recycle.

Why? Recycling is required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to clean the waste stream; to reduce materials going to landfills; and to clean out our waterways, from creeks to oceans.

What’s the goal? The state has set a goal of diverting 75% of the waste stream from the landfill to recycling centers.

What CAN be recycled? All hard plastics , boxes (e.g. cereal, cracker, shoe), aluminum and metal cans, glass containers, newspapers, magazines, cardboard, drink cartons, and paper including junk mail.

What CAN’T be recycled? No plastic bags, shrink wrap, film plastic, Styrofoam or hazardous waste, including pesticides and cleaners.

which monitors greenhouse gas emissions, and we’re thrilled by the Member of the Month honor.”

Harrison joined The Climate Registry in 2008 – just after the registry was formed – and it’s met its goal of remaining far ahead of the clean-air curve every year.

The Climate Registry is a nonprofit organization designed and created in 2007 to manage and reduce businesses’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Recycle Your Green Waste

Reminder: Businesses Must Recycle Organic Waste

California businesses take note: If you generate at least 4 cubic yards of solid waste per week, you

must comply with a state law requiring businesses to cut their food and other organic waste by 50% of 2014 levels, by 2020.

If you’re an eligible business owner and a customer of Harrison, be sure you’re taking part in the company’s organic waste pickup program, in compliance with AB 1826. If not, call 805-647-1414, ext. 4125.

What goes into the organics bin? Eggs, dairy products, grains, pasta, fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry and fish. (No bones or shells.)

Where do the food scraps go? Harrison trucks collect the food scraps from the participants and transport the scraps to Agromin, which employs a Covered Aerated Static Pile System to mix them with yard waste to create enriched compost.

Free Program Helps Businesses Go Green & SaveCamarillo businesses can

save money and energy by taking part in a free program available through Southern California Edison and SoCal Gas, city officials announced.

The Direct Install program involves the utilities contracting with energy specialists who will go out and evaluate facilities free of charge. These specialists can identify more efficient alternatives for work equipment. Items eligible for replacement include LED lighting, refrigeration, water tank and plumbing insulation, low-flow water valves and aerators, commercial-fitting insulation, and laminar-flow restrictors for medical facilities.

To get started, Edison commercial customers can call 800-746-4777 or go to www.SCE.com; for SoCal Gas, call 800-508-2348 or visit www.SoCalGas.com. Assistance is also available through the VC Regional Energy Alliance (VCREA) at 805-654-3874 or [email protected].
