CHALLENGE

We asked six children how they travelled to school each day: Sophie – walked

Ben – rode his bike

Kayleigh – travelled in her car

Mabelle – rode her scooter

Dominic – walked

Amelia – travelled by car

Zack – took the bus

Put the information given above into the table and work out

the calories burnt, carbon dioxide emissions and cost for each

child per day, assuming they all travel the 1.6 miles to

school.

1. Which is the healthiest way to travel?

2. What is total cost each day for these six children?

3. What are the total emissions (CO2) each day?

4. What does it cost per week (5 days) for all six children?

5. What are the total emissions (CO2) over a week (5 days)?

6. There are 12 weeks in a term. Can you work out the cost

over the whole term?

7. Can you work out the emissions over the whole term?

Spellings Try to complete one every day if you can.

Practise makes perfect - Practise the Year 3/4 statutory spellings (see list

attached) using two of these activities:

1. Use rainbow writing for each of your spellings.

2. Use your spellings accurately within a sentence.

3. Draw an image to go with the word – making the word memorable and

linking the word with the meaning.

4. Make the word out of different materials – you could use playdough,

pasta, Lego … the choice is yours!

5. Use a thesaurus to find words that have a similar meaning (synonym).

6. Paint your words on the patio! Using water, can you paint some of your key words on your patio or on the path?

7. Dotty spellings – write your word in coloured dots as below.

You could try writing your spellings as dotty words and

then apply them to a sentence about transport.

I travelled on The Jacobite train and it was awesome!

Prefix or suffix? Add a prefix or suffix or both to each root word to make a new word.

Don’t get tricked because some root words don’t have a prefix or suffix!

Prefix Root word Suffix EXAMPLE: unbelievable, disbelieve believe unbelievable, believed, believing,

believes

interest

island

knowledge

learn

length

CHALLENGE

Play - Mallet's Mallet - It is a word association game where you must not pause, hesitate, or

repeat a word. Tell your adult one of your spellings and they must say a word which is

associated with it. Then it is your turn to say a word, which is associated with the one your

adult just said. Keep going until someone gets stuck or repeats.

For example- interest – curiosity – wonder – question – doubt – uncertainty

Weekly writing tasks. Aim to do one a day.

1 Write a Conversation – Frank and Jason are Wanted, but they are still carrying out daring robberies.

This time it seems is the great train robbery, however, will their greed be the end of them?

Follow this link to watch the video https://vimeo.com/68344409

Now write a conversation between the two bothers at the moment they discover the gem. Remember to

punctuate the start and end of speech with “ “ , a capital letter for the first word and punctuate the

end of speech with , ! or ?. Then, tell the reader who is talking. Also, remember to start a new line with

each new speaker.

2 Persuasive Writing – Design your own vehicle and then write an advert to encourage people to buy it.

3 Historical Report – Research the history of a mode of transport and write a short report about it.

4 Write a balanced Argument – Families should be allowed to use their car only 3 times per week.

Can you write a balanced argument about this? Write 3 reasons why this would be a good idea and 3

reasons why it makes things difficult. In your argument consider the impact it would have on the family

and the environment.

5 Write a Poem – Visit the website below and read the poem – Many ways to Travel by Tony Mitton.

Diary Write your own diary entry and try to include the success criteria.

During the C-19 lockdown, my dad has been shielding, for he is over 70 years. I have seen

him, at a distance, when dropping off food for him. Sadly, Shilo and Lara have not seen

him for weeks. After the Government’s announcement that people, who live on their own, may

choose one household to visit as often as they like, he has been able to visit us at home. It

has been marvellous! Dad arrived on his bike, which he has been using to exercise during the

lockdown.

“Papa’s here!” Lara cried as she ran up and hugged him then Shilo followed suit. Lockdown

has certainly made us appreciate our friends and family even more than we did before. One

of our local pubs has been selling take away roast dinners every Sunday, so we treated

ourselves to one. It was delicious and we felt glad to be supporting a small, local business.

Since then we have seen my dad most days, but we are still being incredibly careful not to

spread germs. It’s so good to see the shops reopening and things slowly getting back to

normal. All my friends and family are trying to support the small businesses where possible

so that they don’t close. We have also been enjoying sandwiches from ‘Burns the Bread’,

which is a small, independent bakery in Glastonbury.

Here are some ideas of the things you might like to write about –

• Start by writing a general comment of how your week was

• Write about someone you have been allowed to see

• Write about what you did together

• Write about any plans you may have

Success Criteria:

Punctuation: try to include speech marks “Papa!” cried Lara.

Compound conjunctions: (FANBOYS) for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so

Expanded noun phrases with preposition; under, behind, before, between, next to

Time connectives; then, after, when, before, while, during

To include ‘drop clause’ (relative clauses); ,who ,which ,where

Causal Conjunctions: because, unless, so that, otherwise, therefore, however

Hello Everyone! I hope that you have had another great week, and that you have managed to find

time to write your diary. My diary entry this week is about my reunion with my dad.

Topic Learning project – to choose different tasks to complete each day throughout the week.

The project this week aims to provide opportunities for you to learn more about transport. Learning may

focus on modes of transport, transport in the past, the science behind transport, road safety and how to

be safe around water.

1 Great Inventors- Visit this website and learn

all about Henry Ford (founder of the Ford

Motor Company). At the bottom the page there

is a recording you can listen to and a quiz you

can take.

https://www.ducksters.com/biography/henry_ford.php

2 Draw a sketch- Use pencil to sketch a

drawing of the 1908 Ford Model T

by Ford Motor Company. This picture can be

found on the website below.

https://www.ducksters.com/biography/henry_ford.php

3 Fact File- Visit the website below and learn about

the Wright Brothers (who invented the first

aeroplane). Watch the video and make notes. You will

need to pause the video at times so that you have

time to write down the information. After that,

create your own fact file all about the brothers and

their accomplishments. Remember to include headings, sub-headings, pictures

and labelled diagrams. https://safeyoutube.net/w/aT16

4 Float your Boat - Using a variety of materials, make boats out

of junk e.g. wood, plastic, paper, polystyrene etc. Make a

prediction about whether or not they will float and then test

them to see which floats the longest. Can you figure out why

this boat floated for the longest?

5 Safety Poster – Visit both these websites, pick your favourite and create a

safety poster to inform others about how they can keep themselves safe either

around the roads or water.

the-road (road safety)

BOREDOM BUSTERS BOREDOM BUSTER LIST – why not try your hand at one of these:

Make 2 or 3 different styles of paper aeroplanes. See which one travels the furthest. Why?

Design your own dream car or cart! Think about the different colours and features it could

have.

Design your own personal number plate.

Create your own anagrams! Mix up the letters of some words and see if any of your family

members can solve them!

Play games while you are in the car like ‘I Spy’ or ‘Counting Cars Colours’.

Imagine you are going on a long journey; pick 5 things you would take with you. Draw

them!

Pick one place in the world you would like to travel to. Plan the route from your house to the

destination! Think about each step of the journey (bus tickets, train tickets and flights etc).

Make a treasure map for something you have hidden in the garden. Can your family members

find it?

Play traffic lights! Green is run, amber is walk and red is stop!

Create a collage of different types of transport. You could draw, colour, or paint a variety of

vehicles or make a large collage of one vehicle. Use bold colours to really make their vehicles

stand out! The collage could be made using cut up squares from magazines and leaflets.
