Transport & Communication

Transport Infrastructure is the backbone of a nations economy. Kerala had over the

years developed a good infrastructure. The important cities and other places of interest are well

connected by road (National and State highways) and rail network Different power and irrigation

projects and plantations in the high ranges have facilitated the development of road network in

the Western Ghats of Kerala. Almost all the urban centers in the State are nodal points in road

network. The State is naturally gifted with a series of backwaters parallel to the coast. These

backwaters interconnected by artificial canals provide a unique waterway system. In addition to

this, post and telecommunications is well developed in the state. Now the main challenge is the

upkeep and up gradation.

Of the various modes of transport, Road Transport is vital to economic

development, trade and social up gradation. The National Highway network is of length

1523.954kms. This is only 2.3% of total National Highway of the country. There are 8 National

Highways in the state-NH 47, NH 17, NH 49, NH 47A, NH 208, NH 212, NH 213 and NH 220. .

Kerala has a total road length of 173592 KM. during 2007-08. P.W.D roads constitute about 16%

of the total road network in the State but carries nearly 80% of the road traffic within the State.

KSRTC is the largest single Public sector undertaking, which carries out transport

operations in the state. Road transport acts as the feeder service to the rail, air and Inland water

transport. The vehicle density of the state is very high compared to many other states in India.

The road freight services are wholly owned and operated by the private sector. The Motor vehicle

registration in the State is showing a steady increase in the past few years. The number of Motor

vehicle having valid registration as on 31.3.2008 is 4442387. Wayanad has the lowest number of

vehicles followed by Idukki the highest vehicle population was recorded in Ernakulam district

followed Thiruvananthapuram district.

The tremendous increase in the volume of road traffic in recent years has caused

increase of road accidents. Government of Kerala and police are taken several initiatives to

enforce road discipline and rules and programmes to address the alarming issues of increasing

road accidents by coordinating all stakeholders. In Kerala, almost 60% of the vehicles are two

wheelers, which amounts to nearly 42% of the road accidents reported in the state.
