Building a Positive School Climate

The Learning Policy Institute has created a research brief, Making ESSA’s Equity

Promise Real: State Strategies to Close the Opportunity Gap Building a Positive

School Climate. This brief shows which states are making efforts to build positive

school climates in their ESSA plans and describes how some states intend to

measure and use information from this indicator to create more equitable and

inclusive learning environments for all students. Read about Nevada's plan to

build a positive school climate in Nevada schools.

Keeping Parents Informed - Evidenced Based Practices in Education

Academic Progress Monitoring

Progress monitoring is an evidenced based practice used to assess a child's

academic progress and evaluate the effectiveness of instruction. National Center

on Intensive Intervention has evaluated programs and published a Academic

Progress Monitoring Chart so parents can see the tools that are used according to

the child's grade to assess levels in Reading, Math or Spelling and Written

Expression. Ask your child's teacher about the type of Progress Monitoring tools

that provide information and help make individualized decisions on the delivery of

instruction.

Military-Connected Children NewsCompensatory Education and Relocating FamiliesOn October 23, 2019, OSEP published a letter to “Anonymous” about the

provision of compensatory education, as part of a complaint resolution, after a

family relocates to a new state. This informal guidance can be useful to highly

mobile military families.

Mental Health and Native American Youth

In early November, Nevada PEP participated in the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes and

Owyhee Community Health Facility 2019 Health Fair. This health fair was

particularly important because Native American youth experience physical health,

mental health, and substance abuse challenges at much higher rates than non-

Native American youth. To help address this, the Indian Health Service funds 12

Youth Regional Treatment Centers (YRTCs) around the country to provide Native

American youth with culturally competent services. The YRTC located in Nevada is

called Nevada Skies Youth Wellness Center, about 30 miles east of Reno.

Although Nevada Skies is only for male youth in need of residential treatment,

there are many other federal and community resources available for Native

American Youth with mental health concerns. Visit the SAMHSA website to learn

more.

Statewide Family Network Update

Many of the families that we support through the Statewide Family Network are

looking for ways to stay connected this time of year. The holiday season can be

especially challenging for youth with mental health concerns. Some youth

experience holiday blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Luckily, Nevada

has many family-friendly community events that will not break your budget. In

Reno, families can go to the Winter Light Festival and Menorah Lighting. In Las

Vegas, families can see the Downtown Summerlin Holiday Parade and Family

Entertainment. Finally, Elko families can enjoy the live concerts, parade, and

dancing at the Annual Snowflake Festival. All of these activities are a great way

for your youth to engage with your community while you spend time together.

Let’s Plan

If your child with a disability is going to turn 14 soon, now might be a good time to

start thinking about a transition plan. The transition plan is based on the student’s

needs, his/her strengths, preferences, and interests and is written by your child's

IEP team.Students are encouraged to attend the IEP to help develop their

transition plan. Written for parents of youth with disabilities, this handout, “Parent

Tips for Transition Planning”, has a Question and Answer section for parents to

help plan for their child’s future. Read this informative guide filled with valuable

information.

With Autism

Clinical trials are research studies that look at new ways to prevent, detect, or

treat diseases and conditions . The goal of clinical trials is to determine if a new

test or treatment works and is safe. Although individual participants may benefit

from being part of a clinical trial, participants should be aware that the primary

purpose of a clinical trial is to gain new scientific knowledge so that others may be

better helped in the future.
