A Welcome Message / Neges i Groseawu Chi
I am delighted to be able to introduce our transition booklet and am looking forward to working closely with all of our new pupils and their families in order to ensure that the move from primary to secondary education is as smooth as possible. This booklet has been carefully put together in order to provide you with as much information and advice as possible and there are opportunities for you to reflect and undertake tasks as you move through it. We hope that it will provide a glimpse into your future and a taste of life at Stanwell. At Stanwell we aim to live our mission statement of ‘Learning to Excel’ every day. We believe this is about developing excellent learning habits and skills that you can take into the next stage of your lives. We expect you to work hard and commit fully to your academic work and we have the highest expectations of your attitude, behaviour and uniform. We outline some of these in this booklet. We similarly believe that excellence is a habit and that your development is about growing and flourishing as a ‘whole’ person, not just academically. There are fantastic opportunities at Stanwell to participate in a wide range of extra‐curricular activities that will be part of your learning journey with us and help develop your character and wider skills. Our booklet also tells you about some of these. We are hugely proud of our young people and they are very proud to be part of the school’s success. I have no doubt that you too will make an outstanding contribution to our school community when you join us. I hope you enjoy this booklet and all of the transition activities that you’ll be working on. For now, take care and keep safe. I look forward to welcoming you to Stanwell soon. Mr Brown Headteacher

About Us / Amdanon Ni
Year Tutors / Penaethiaid Blwyddyn Each year group at Stanwell School has two Heads of Year or Year Tutors. Your Year Tutors are Mr. Baldwin and Miss Sterlini. Year Tutors, along with form tutors, teachers and learning support assistants, are there to support you, as well as monitor progress and behaviour. Your Year Tutors will be based in the Key Stage 3 Office (see map of the school). You can speak to your Year Tutor if you have any problems or concerns.
Form Tutors / Athrawon Dosbarth The year group will be divided into forms. There are ten forms in total in each year group and the forms are represented by a letter TEAMWORK XL. So if you are put in W. Your form would be 7W. Each form has a form teacher who you will see at least once a week for a lesson. You will find out who your form teacher is before the end of the summer term. On your first day, you will meet with your form teacher and they will give you your timetable and planner. You can speak to your form teacher if you have any problems or concerns.

Finding Your Way Around / Yn Dod o Hyd I’ch Ffordd o Gwmpas Yr Ysgol
Stanwell School is a large school and sometimes new pupils worry about getting lost. It might take a few weeks before you feel completely confident about finding your way around but that’s understandable. There is a logical layout to the school numbers with all rooms on the ground floor labelled with a G then a number on the door. All the rooms on the first floor are labelled with an F and then a number on the door. There is a plan of the school on the next two pages. If you do get lost, don’t worry. You can ask a teacher or another pupil to point you in the right direction. If you are looking for G24 and you are standing in front of G20 you know you are close! They key thing is to first check you are on the right floor (Ground or First) and then to follow the room numbers which go in order. Since the corridors can get busy during lesson changes, we ask all pupils to stick to their left as this helps keep everyone moving. The stairs are also labelled up only or down only to help prevent congestion. The Maths corridor also has a one way system. These are all clearly labelled as you walk around the school. It is important to follow these rules to make sure everyone can get to their classes in a timely manner. At the start of the school day, all stairs can be used to go up. At the end of the day, all stairs can be used to go down. The two key things to remember are i) if you get lost, don’t worry, you can ask for help from staff or other pupils ii) stick to the left in the corridors.
Use the maps on pages 12 and 13 to answer the following questions:
1. On which floor will you find the Maths department? ____________________ 2. If you were in F30, which department would you be in? __________________ 3. On which floor will you find the school library? ________________________ 4. The Key Stage 3 office is next to which department? ___________________ 5. If you have Geography, which room numbers are you looking for?

Making Friends / Yn Gwneud Ffrindiau
Starting secondary school is a great opportunity to meet lots of new people and make great friends. It is natural if you are feeling a little nervous, but remember everyone else is likely to be feeling the same way. Within a few weeks, you will get to know the people in your
classes even if you aren’t always with people you already know. Some of you might come from primaries with a large number of other pupils you already know, some of you may be starting at Stanwell without knowing anyone. There will be lots of opportunities to make friends as you are with different people in different subjects. Even if you know a lot of people already, you can still make new friends. You can never have enough and there is always room for more! The most important thing is to be open to meeting new people. Smile, be kind, be inclusive toward others and, above all, be yourself. This will help everyone settle and get to know each other.
Whilst you will meet lots of people in your classes, a great way of making new friends is to join a club or get involved in an after school activity. This is an opportunity to get to know people you might not see in the normal school day. It can also help you to feel part of the school community and possibly get to know pupils from other year groups.
Think about some questions you might ask to get to know others in Year 7. One has been done for you. Can you think of four others?
Do you play any sports?

Punctuality and Behaviour / Prydlondeb ac Ymddygiad
Having high expectations and high standards of behaviour helps ensure Stanwell School is a place where everyone can thrive. We want pupils to come to school ready to learn and respectful of the learning environment for all. Punctuality is crucial. All pupils must be punctual at the start of the school day and must arrive to lessons on time. The school day officially begins at 8:30am. When the bell rings, you will line up in the courtyard according to the classroom of your first lesson. The classroom numbers are marked on the walls around the courtyard and your teacher for your first lesson will collect you and walk you to your classroom. If you are late to school, you will have to go to reception where you will get a late report and you will be marked as late on the register. This late report must be given to your classroom teacher and you will be expected to make up the time by reporting to the Year Tutor at break. We expect all Stanwell pupils to be respectful of the school environment at all times to ensure it is safe and tidy for everyone. There must be no eating or drinking on the courtyard, fields or tennis courts at any time and please put all rubbish in bins around the school or take it home with you. Respect is extremely important. At Stanwell we believe you should treat others as you wish to be treated and accept people for who they are. We place a high value on being kind and having good manners such as saying please and thank you, and holding the doors open for others when needed. This makes for a happy environment for everyone.

The School Planner / Y Dyddiadur Gwaith Cartref
On your first day at Stanwell, you will be given a school planner by your form teacher. You will need to bring it to school with you every day. The planner is to help you keep organised with homework and it will have a copy of your timetable so you know which lessons to go to. If a teacher sets homework, you will need to write this in your planner; including the subject, the instructions and the date when the work is due. It is important you write homework in your planner straight away so you don’t forget about it. Then you can tick it when you have completed it.
Your parent/carer will need to sign your school planner each week to say you have completed your homework on time. It will also be checked regularly by your form teacher. Teachers may write comments in your planner for your parents, so it is important that you make sure you show them at least every week. You can also use your planner to write important reminders to help you stay organised.

Breaks & Lunch / Egwyl a Chinio
Breakfast club is available from 8am to 8:30am. At the end of breakfast club, the bell will ring and pupils line up in the courtyard ready to go to their first lesson for registration.
The bell will ring for morning break for Year 7 at 11:05am then you can go to the canteen and have something to eat and drink, go to the toilet and you can catch up with your friends. The bell will ring again at 11:20am for you to return to your lesson. Year 7 have their own break time so other classes are being taught at that time. Pupils are therefore not allowed to be in the corridors without permission and we expect pupils to be quiet and walk sensibly to and from the canteen so as not to disturb other lessons going on.
The bell will ring for lunch at 1:05pm. This is an opportunity for you to eat lunch, go to the toilet and spend time with your friends. Year 7 have their own lunch time so please be respectful of the fact that other lessons are
going on when you are walking to and from the canteen. Lunch finishes at 1:30pm.
We expect all pupils to be sensible and behave appropriately during breaks and lunches. It is your responsibility to keep the canteen clean and tidy so you will be expected to return your trays and put all rubbish and recycling in the bins provided. As a school we are working hard to help our environment and reduce waste. Please recycle where possible.
There are lots of food choices available at Stanwell. The catering team work hard to provide a range of food to suit a variety of tastes and all allergy information is clearly indicated. Hot food is available in the dinner hall with the menu changing daily. Also jacket potatoes, wraps and a salad bar are options available every day. In the sandwich bar there are a variety of sandwiches, paninis and toasties as well as fruit, yoghurts and cold drinks. The Stanwell Pod offers tea and hot chocolate daily.
*Image reflects 2019 prices
20
Of course, you can also bring a packed lunch if you wish to do so.
Water machines are freely available in the canteen and at various water stations around the school (outside the Year Tutors’ office, in the IT corridor, the MFL corridor, the History corridor and the Sixth Form area). You are strongly encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle so you can fill it as needed. We are an eco-school and discourage single use plastic water bottles.
Fobs / Ffobiau
At the beginning of Year 7 you will each be given a fob for you to use throughout your time at Stanwell. It must only be used by you and must not be loaned to anyone else. The fob is used for buying food and drinks, printing or photocopying and also for borrowing books from the library so it is important to keep your fob safe and to bring it to school daily.
Stanwell has a cashless system for buying food and drinks from the dining hall. You will need to put money on your fob to buy food or drinks at breaks and lunches. You can put money on your fob by using parent pay. This can be done online from home or by putting a cheque in an envelope with your name, form and the amount clearly written on the envelope and then posting it in the post box in reception. This must be done first thing in the morning (before lining up in the courtyard) if you need that money on your fob to use that day. You can also put money on your fob using the fob machine in the dinner hall. It takes £2, £1 or 50p coins or notes.
If you forget your fob, you must not use someone else’s. You would need to go to the reception and tell them you have forgotten your fob and they will help you. If you lose your fob, you should notify reception so they can prevent someone else from using it and sort out a new fob for you. If you find a fob, you must hand it in as soon as possible to the Year Tutors so they can ensure it is given back to its owner.
21
Book in a Bag / Llyfr yn y Bag
At Stanwell we are keen to promote and encourage reading. We recognise the value of reading as a means of learning and the fact that extensive reading and exposure to a wide range of texts make a huge contribution to students’ educational achievement. We also place a high value on reading for pleasure. Books can empower and inspire young people and we want to foster a love of reading in all our pupils. At Stanwell we have a wonderful librarian, Mrs Lewis, who is an avid reader herself and she works very hard to ensure a wide range of books are available to suit a variety of tastes. She makes excellent recommendations and listens and responds to what books our pupils are interested in. When you join Stanwell, you will be able to use your fob to borrow books from the library for free, either in paperback or digital forms. Our library offers a range of fiction and non-fiction texts and we truly believe that there is something there for everyone. The teachers at Stanwell love to read too. You will often find book recommendations on our classroom doors. It might be a book we had for Christmas, a book we are reading for World Book Day or a book we have read during the summer holidays. Sometimes these books might be linked to our subjects, but often they are books we have simply enjoyed and wish to share. At Stanwell, all pupils from Year 7 to Year 9 are expected to carry a ‘book in a bag’. This can be a book you bring from home or one you have borrowed from the school library. We want you to have a reading book with you at all times to give you every opportunity to read for pleasure. It may be that you finish your work early in class, or maybe you fancy switching off during lunchtime by immersing yourself in a fictional world, but we want all pupils to have a book ready to embrace any reading opportunities which may present themselves. It can be fiction or non-fiction, a magazine like BBC History Magazine or National Geographic, or it could be a graphic novel.
22
Homework and Homework Club / Gwaith Cartref a Chlwb Gwaith Cartref
You will be given homework by your teachers and you will be expected to record this in your planner including the date it is due (see page 18). If you are stuck, or don’t understand something about the work, you should go and speak to your teacher to ask for help in plenty of time before you need to hand in your work. It is a good idea to try and complete homework on the same day you are given it as the work is fresh in your mind and there is plenty of time to seek help from the teacher if you are unsure what to do.
There are homework clubs where you can go after school Monday to Thursday each week. At these homework clubs you will have access to computers and printers, a good space to work without the distraction of television and mobile phones, and there is support available if you need help. An independent homework club is held in the IT suite to give you access to computers, then another homework club is held in the Learning Hub (near G23) with support available from LSAs and volunteer sixth formers. Both clubs run from 3pm to 4pm and help you to establish a good routine for completing your homework.
Completing homework regularly helps to ensure it does not build up or become overwhelming. It can be tempting to do the homework tasks we like or to prioritise the subjects we enjoy the most, but putting certain tasks off until the last minute can be stressful and can result in deadlines being missed. If you have multiple pieces of homework due to be handed in, you should prioritise the work based on the date it is due to be handed in and you should focus on the most urgent first.
Imagine it is Monday 21st September 2020. Look at the list of homework tasks below, in which order should they be completed?
History – Complete application form to be King of England. Due 25/9/20 Maths – Finish decimals questions 12-20. Due 23/9/20 Art – Take photographs of 3 man-made and 3 natural patterns. Due 28/9/20 English – Read chapter 2 of Wonder. 24/9/20.

Help & Support / Help a Chefnogaeth
If you have any worries or concerns in school there are plenty of people who can help. You can talk to your class teachers, your form teacher or year tutors. All of whom will want to help if they can. There are also other individuals who can offer support:
Miss Jenkins is the Assistant Head of Well-Being and PSE at Stanwell. She works closely with the Year Tutors, Mrs Hodgkinson (the Attendance Officer), Mrs Driscoll (Pupil Liaison Officer) and outside agencies to support the needs of Stanwell pupils.
Mr John is the ALNCo at Stanwell. His role is to identify and put in place support for pupils who may need some additional help in school. He works with teachers to ensure support is in place to help all pupils achieve their potential. Mr John is part of a brilliant team including Mrs Beck (the ALN Admin Coordinator), Mrs Saleem (IDP Coordinator) and, of course, our Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) who support pupils in lessons, and also outside the classroom through delivering interventions and support around the school. Mr John’s office is near the Learning Hub on the ground floor.
Just remember there is a lot of help and support at school if you need it.
Hopefully this booklet and the welcome video have answered the questions you wrote down at the start of the booklet, but if you still want to ask a question you can email us at [email protected]
