Introduction

• Most common in near-term and term infants• Sometimes called RDS type II• Retention of fetal lung fluid past birth plays a role in

the syndrome• Associated with C-section deliveries and precipitous

deliveries

Diagnosis

• Considered a diagnosis of exclusion• Usual signs of respiratory distress• Chest X-ray often similar to RDS except streaky

infilitrates & hyperinflation• Relatively benign condition, usually clears within 24-

48 hours with only minimal interventions

Treatment

• Prophylactic antibiotics• Warmed, humidified oxygen via oxyhood• Need for positive pressure ventilation is rare
