Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen(simply known asTransformers 2), is a 2009 Americanscience fictionaction filmdirected byMichael Bayand executive produced bySteven Spielberg. It is a sequel to 2007'sTransformersand the second installment in thelive-actionTransformersseriestaking place two years afterTransformers. The plot revolves around Sam Witwicky, who is caught in the war between two factions of alien robots, theAutobotsand theDecepticons. Sam is having strange visions of Cybertronian symbols, and being hunted by the Decepticons under the orders of an ancient Decepticon named TheFallen, who seeks to get revenge on Earth by finding and activating a machine that would provide the Decepticons with anenergonsource, destroying the sun and all life on Earth in the process.With deadlines jeopardized by possible strikes by theDirectors Guild of Americaand theScreen Actors Guild, Bay managed to finish the production on time with the help ofprevisualizationand ascriptmentby his writersRoberto Orci,Alex Kurtzman, and series newcomerEhren Kruger. Shooting took place from May to November2008, with locations inEgypt,Jordan,Pennsylvania,New Jersey, andCalifornia, as well asair basesinNew MexicoandArizona.Revenge of the Fallenwas released on June 24, 2009, and was a hugebox officesuccess, setting records upon release. The film grossed a total of $402.1 million in North America and $434.2 million in other territories, for a total of $836.3 million worldwide. It was the second highest grossing film of 2009 in North America (behindAvatar),18th domestically, the42nd highest-grossing film of all timeand fourth highest of the year worldwide (behindAvatar,Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, andIce Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs). With over 11 million home media sales in 2009, it was also thetop-selling film of the year in the United States.The film received mostly negative reviews by critics, mostly because of the frequentstereotypeson the movie directing. It got mixed reviews from audiences. The film won three awards and became the highest-grossing film to winWorst Pictureat the30th Golden Raspberry Awardsceremony. A third film,Transformers: Dark of the Moon, was released on June 29, 2011. A fourth film,Transformers: Age of Extinction, was released on June 27, 2014. A fifth film as of now titledTransformers 5is scheduled for a 2017 release. This was the last film in the series to starMegan Fox, and was also the last film in the series to be distributed byDreamWorks Pictures, leavingParamount Picturesto become the distributor of its future films.S
