TRANSFORMEDHumeRidge Church of Christ Magazine

Welcome to the new edition of Transformed Magazine! During the autumn months there is plenty happening at HumeRidge, much of which you can read about in these pages.

In April we have the international founder of Christians Against Poverty (CAP) with us to launch Toowoomba’s CAP Centre. CAP is a Christian ministry releasing people from debt and poverty through free debt management, training and ongoing support.

We are also anticipating the official launch of Mosaic Ministries this autumn. Mosaic is already operating successfully out of HumeRidge, providing a caring psychology based service for the community, but brand new office and meeting rooms will be officially opened on site soon!

In May we are delighted to partner with the Watoto Children’s Choir and have two Concerts of Hope at HumeRidge. We have been delighted at the music and energy of these choirs and have been touched by the stories of each young life. This weekend will provide a wonderful multi-cultural experience for all who come!

These are just a few of our many ministries and events aimed at Transforming Lives. Sometimes our gatherings transform us spiritually to live more like Jesus. Other times our efforts take us into the community or around the world to transform the destinies of people in need and give hope for the future. And other times we seek to transform families by developing better relationship, healthy marriages, or positive parenting. Through all of this we are single-minded in our mission and purpose of TRANSFORMING LIVES.

During April, Sunday morning messages at HumeRidge will look at the theme of transforming the culture of today’s society whilst we’re at work. The following is adapted from a number of Timothy Keller’s articles. I trust this presentation provides a useful introduction into our upcoming series.

Keller writes, “I am often asked: ‘Should Christians be involved in shaping culture?’ My answer is that we can’t not be involved in shaping culture ... One of the most strategic places we influence our culture is in the workplace. “Yet when Christians work in the world, they will either assimilate into the culture supporting the status quo or they will

2 I

be agents of change. In most vocational fields, believers face work-worlds in which ruthless, competitive behaviour is the norm.

There are two opposing mistakes that a Christian can make in addressing the challenges of their vocational field. On the one hand Christians can seal off their faith from their work, labouring according to the same values and practices that everyone else uses. Or Christians may loudly and clumsily declare their Christian faith to their co-workers, often without showing any grace and wisdom in the way they relate to people on the job. In the workplace most Christians display either a privatized faith or a militant, belligerent faith.

So what does devotion to Jesus Christ look like in competitive, often cutthroat and insecure-workplace environments?

Christians should be a people who integrate their faith with their work. God put work into the Garden of Eden, so work must be an enormous good, something that fits and fulfils part of our design.

Secondly Christians need to avoid the extremes of privatising faith or declaring it belligerently. Sealing faith off from workplace labour leads to adopting the same values and practices as everyone else. But loud, clumsy expressions of faith to co-workers,

without grace and wisdom isolate and create suspicion.

And then, Christians need to learn and practice excellence in work. It is a crucial means to gain credibility for our faith. If our work is shoddy, our verbal witness only leads listeners to despise our beliefs.

Finally Christians need to know the deep security of their identity in Christ. Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, who was originally a physician, said “there are many whom I have had the privilege of meeting whose tombstones might well bear the grim epitaph... ‘born a man, died a doctor.’” It is one thing to believe you are justified by Christ’s righteousness, not your own achievements...and it is another thing to let the doctrine truly shape your affections, the way your heart works.

The relationship of Christians to culture is the singular current crisis point for the church. Perhaps then, there is no better place to begin to address this than in the 9-5 window of the workplace.

Will HeNDeRSON (DiReCTOR)

Hi my name is Will Henderson, I serve Mosaic Ministries in the areas of Pastoral Care and Strategic Planning (B. Bus Advanced Marketing). As an Ordained Minister (Bach Theology) and Pastor (Diploma of Ministries) I have often sat with, prayed for, served and cared for many people suffering from mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar and anxiety, but nothing prepared me for the pain of falling into major depression myself. Thankfully, not only has God helped me on His journey of recovery, but I can see that He has and is using my weaknesses to help love and heal others who also suffer from the scars of mental illness. Although I have an ongoing journey ahead, I am excited and humbled by the privilege of serving my Lord Jesus and the people of HumeRidge Church and the greater Toowoomba area through Mosaic Ministries in the days and years ahead.

DR SANDRA BAKeR (DiReCTOR)

My name is Sandra Baker. I am a registered psychologist (BSc (with distinction), BSc (first class honours, PhD) who has had the privilege of sitting with, and serving people with mental illness for the last 8 years. I have facilitated approximately 1500 therapy groups at a local hospital for mental illness sufferers, and have been in private practice since 2007. I am so honoured and humbled that God placed me with people who are broken-hearted, and with those who suffer from life threatening illnesses and their distressed families, with trauma survivors, families in trouble, and youth who have lost their way. I have also worked with various church leaders cross-denominationally, from SE QLD, who are often overworked, stressed & burdened for the well being of their respective congregations. Mosaic Ministries has been a dream I believe from God for more than 10 years. To humbly be able reach out into our community with the love that Jesus has shown me leaves me speechless! To Jesus our beloved saviour and King be all the honour and glory for being able to serve our community through Mosaic Ministries and for providing such a great team!

BeCK CAMeRON

My name is Beck Cameron, I am in Administration and PA roles in Mosaic Ministries. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Midwifery and I am married to a Youth Pastor and Chaplain at a local Toowoomba school. I have seen Mosaic Ministries grow from the conception of an idea to an incredibly blessed Ministry, reaching the broken and seeing them healed and set free in Jesus Christ. I am so excited to watch and be a part of the amazing things yet to come, to meet new people and to see our city restored.

BRAD MORRiS

My Name is Brad Morris. I am the Community Care Pastor at New Hope Church Toowoomba. As part of my post graduate studies in Family Therapy and counselling I am working with Mosaic Ministries. It is a great privilege to work as part of this ministry, as it reaches out to those in need for the glory of God.

TANyA MACHiN

My name is Tanya Machin and I am a part time pastoral care worker for Mosaic ministries. I am currently enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy at uSQ and have experience in education, financial services and mental health. I am delighted to be part of the Mosaic team and appreciate the support from leadership and staff at HumeRidge we have already received. Mosaic is a place where people can discuss their struggles with not only their life but how that also impacts on their faith. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for this very blessed ministry.

TiM SMiTH (PASTOR FOR CONgRegATiONAl CARe)

In my role as Congregational Care Pastor it has been a huge encouragement to get alongside the Mosaic Ministry team and see the germination of a vision be birthed, take shape and be already bearing much fruit in the effectiveness of providing support, hope, counsel and prayer through one on one counselling and group therapy sessions. The Mosaic team are both skilled and passionate about the mandate God has given them and the opportunity to partner with us as a Church to see that vision manifest in healed and restored lives and marriages. I encourage us all as a church to pray for the ministry of Mosaic and those who are helped and healed by God through the team. Support them in encouragement, attendance at seminars opened to everyone and any practical or financial help you can give. I am excited by the potential and possibilities this growing ministry can have in our Church and through our Church into a community who desperately need the help and healing only God can bring.

INTRoduCINg JohN KIRKby

With a small donation and big faith, John Kirkby started Christians Against Poverty in 1996. He believed God was calling him to sacrifice his career in finance and use his knowledge of the industry to help the poor.

In his hometown of Bradford, John set off on the incredible journey of CAP. His faith adventure led him to people crippled by debt; parents who couldn’t feed their children, families facing eviction and desperate people living in fear and without hope. He used his expertise to negotiate with creditors, set up budgeting systems and offer a lifeline to those trapped in debt.

Since those small beginnings John and the CAP uK team have gone on to win a multitude of awards including: The Sunday Times - Best Leader and Wellbeing Awards in 2012, Credit Today Awards - Debt Counsellor of the Year Award in 2011 & The Sunday Times - Best Small Company to Work For 2010 & 2009.

the SIL base at ukarumpa grow from a small group of missionaries, who lived with us for six weeks while bamboo accommodation was being built for them. By 1972, when I left New Guinea, the SIL base has become a thriving community of missionaries. 41 years later the Lord has opened up an opportunity for Jan and I to work in the ukarumpa Medical Clinic.

As TRANSFORMED goes to print Jan and I are on our way for our mission venture in PNG. We are grateful for the prayers and support of our HumeRidge family and ask for your continued prayer throughout our trip. The ukarumpa Medical Clinic supports the missionary translators and the local villagers in the Aiyura valley. We look forward to visiting the Professor Schindler Primary School as well. This school was started by my grandfather Charles, in 1949, and, in honour, still bears his name.

The Summer Institutes of Linguistics (SIL) (www.sil.org) is an amazing Christian mission thrust of people the world over, partnering with Wycliffe Bible Translators (www.wycliffe.org) who aim to place a Bible in the hands of all peoples of the world in their own languages. Since Wycliffe’s founding in 1942, 2,500 of 6,860 languages on earth have been translated. With the use of computers, now an unwritten language can be turned to print far faster than was possible only 15 years ago. In Papua New Guinea, there are 836 languages, 340 are defined as “vigorous” and 140 are in “trouble” or “dying”.

From 1948, I was very fortunate to have grown up as a child in Aiyura, on the other side of the river to SIL New Guinea. My father Aubrey administered the government’s Aiyura Agricultural Experimental Station before PNG Independence. In 1956, from our house on the hill in the Eastern Highlands Province, I watched

Jesus’ last recorded words to his disciples before returning to the Father, were: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey

Members of the ‘World Changers’ group have been actively involved corporately and individually in seeking to obey this commission. The main thrust of the group is

to support existing missions or individuals who are engaged in spreading the gospel further out beyond its current boundaries, sometimes at the cost of their lives. You’ve already read about Peter and Jan’s trip to PNG.

Another member of World Changers who is seeking to reach a group of people within our own society who traditionally remain outside the reach of the gospel, is Dr Paul Baker. As a member of God’s Squad Christian motor cycle club for many years, Paul has been working with people on the fringes of our society who seldom come within earshot of God’s saving message of grace. This is his story.

God’s Squad was founded in Melbourne in 1972 by a man named (the now Rev. Dr) John Smith. John, on two separated, unrelated occasions, had been told in a word of prophecy, that he would be an evangelist to the “gentiles”. At the time, he had no idea what that prophecy meant. It was sometime later, he happened to stop at a set of traffic lights in his car and saw a group of bikers on the side of the road. He asked the question of God, “who is reaching these people”? The answer came back: You are!

I (Paul) have had the privilege and honour of joining God’s Squad at its formation in 1972 and

over the years, have seen many people come to the Lord, both inside the church and outside. Over the years, the gospel has been spread via campaigns in major cities and small country towns, schools, correctional institutions, in big rallies and in outlaw biker’s club houses, one on one. Members of God’s Squad have been involved in prison ministry, youth work, schools ministry and even a number of pastors with their own fellowships.

In a couple of months one of our members will be officiating the marriage of a member from a local outlaw motorcycle club. The work of God’s Squad continues today and we have seen the club spread from Melbourne, nationally across Australia and internationally across the world, with chapters now throughout Europe, the uK, Ireland, and a fledgling chapter in the uS. There is even a chapter in the ukraine. In recent years, the club has moved its attention more towards the outlaw motor cycle fraternity with less involvement in the churches. This has resulted in a diminishing prayer support base we once had among the churches.

As one who firmly believes in the power of prayer, I would value your support for the continuing work of God’s Squad as an extension of, and in partnership with, the work of the church.

In January, 9 HumeRidge Children and Youth leaders travelled over to Phnom Penh in Cambodia to visit Hagar International. We spent the first half of the week learning about Cambodia’s history and learning about Hagar’s services and programs it has in place to provide holistic support to children and woman that come into their care.

We began our trip by visiting the Killing Fields. We had the privilege of being shown around and learning about Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge regime which began in the 1970’s. This brought such understanding as to why Cambodia has some of the issues and struggles that they have today. If you don’t know about what happened ... google it! It will give you greater understanding and appreciation of the issues Cambodia is facing today, as well as growing respect in how far Cambodia has come in such a short time.

Learning about the history of Cambodia we started our first Hagar stop at the House of Smiles, Cambodia’s first school for special needs children. This was so encouraging to see the passion teachers had for these children, and how important it was for these children to be allowed to get an education. There is a reason why they called the school, the House of Smiles.

The next day we began by learning about a few of Hagar’s programs to restore broken lives, and work through trauma. We were taught about their counselling methods, and steps that they take with clients (children and women who come into Hagar’s care). We also learnt about Hagar’s Economic Empowerment programs which provide education, on the job training and employment

opportunities to their clients. When looking at Cambodia’s past and seeing what Hagar has achieved it becomes obvious how amazing Hagar’s staff are. They are so passionate about trying to help, empower and restore their clients.

We were very excited about our visit to the CLC (Community Learning Centre) and Girls Shelter. These are the areas the money from HumeRidge fundraising events assists. It was an awesome place to be seeing so many kids running around with big smiles on their faces. There were moments when you would be looking at some children and realise their stories were the ones we heard about at HumeRidge in 2012. We recognised the girl who was tortured by her owner in Malaysia. For me, the story of the French paedophile who abused a girl came to life as I realised the girl standing in front of me was that girl. All of a sudden my heart just broke, and it kept breaking over and over as stories came to life. When you look at their smiles and hear their laughter you get a sense that there is a God who loves justice, who wants to heal, who gives hope, and who is love. You see these things in these children’s eyes, on their face and you hear it when they laugh. It was in these moments that we understood why Hagar exists, and why they deserve every bit of prayer, support and money they we can provide them with.

Hagar International without a doubt is one of the most inspiring and worthy organisations we have heard and read about, or visited. They go above and beyond what’s expected, and they do it with such little resources. Our trip helped us see that our efforts at HumeRidge a well worth it. Hagar, to sum in up in a word, are “awesome”.

First of all let me say when it comes to Kids Ministry I am NO expert. I decided to help out around the place a few years ago to support those who “do” kids ministry for my kids. However, when I took on some youth and kids ministry subjects at ACOM as part of my degree I was challenged all the more to consider more deeply the importance of kids ministry in the life of the church.

This may be a little controversial but bare with me for I mean no disrespect... Here’s some of what I learnt from those “doing” kids ministry IN CHuRCH throughout our great state:

NO 1. These young people were passionate about sharing Jesus with kids.

As a Mum I was inspired by their sense of responsibility and genuine love. I was enthused by their commitment to learn how to reach kids with the good news. As the oldest in the class I got excited about the next generation of leaders being raised up in our churches.

NO 2. Parents are their biggest nightmare!

Now as a parent I wondered what on earth they were talking about but I soon began to understand the big picture.

Natalie tucker

While parents naturally know their kids best, they also think they know how the kid’s ministry leaders should “do” ministry and are generous with their advice and criticism. What parents often fail to recognise/accept is their child or children are among the many. Leaders in kid’s ministry do work and train hard to support ALL children not just one or two. Genuine concern needs to be expressed with enough graciousness to accept the Leader’s “big picture” knowledge. And, Encouragement goes a long, long way …

NO 3. Culture changes.

While the truth of gospel doesn’t change the way we share the gospel needs to adapt with each generation. The Apostle Paul was a master at communicating the good news about Jesus in different cultural settings. Culture today is rapidly changing and Leaders need to be on their toes. Our children seek to belong and creating an atmosphere where everyone feels

“safe” is vital. From this place of belonging and safety kids can flourish and grow. Dare I say being “safe” is also a need of our young leaders who will make mistakes, learn and grow in their process of developing as leaders.

It’s so easy from the sidelines to often look at Kids Ministry and see “what’s wrong” or “needs improvement”.

At HumeRidge our Kids Ministry Teams are sewing into the lives of our children; the children from our homes and community who are the future leaders of our church and city. The fruit of their labour may not be seen for decades to come so I urge you to encourage them, encourage them and encourage them some more. Pray that they will have wisdom beyond their years, strength to endure and that the love of God will burn bright in their lives.

Together, let’s support Kids Ministry, and don’t forget to join us on Sunday May 26th for the Family Service.
