Highlights Of Items In This Issue:

What now? That’s an important question to ask ourselves

regularly as we seek a meaningful life.

What now?

As we have just come through Lenten observa-

tions and are in the celebrations of Easter this

question takes on a particular religious signifi-

cance. What now that Jesus and his message

are validated in his resurrection? What now that

the significance of the Christian faith is again

shown to be all inclusive of my life, past, present

and future?

Instead of answering that question with lots of thoughts and ideas and

actions, how about asking it and waiting for an answer in silence?

“Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) is the best way to find direction.

“When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them because your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” (Matthew 6:7) Trusting that God knows what we need takes practice.

Set a timer for 20 minutes. Then ask the question of God and try to listen.

Whenever your mind wanders—gently return it to listening, and eventu-

ally finding longer sessions of quiet. Lots of ideas and images arise in our

minds, don’t be afraid of them simply place them aside for these 20

minutes and return to the question.

“What now for you?”

This question will be answered. It is the question at the base of,

“Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

you will find direction. Not often with a flash of insight or with an

auditory answer but in the way your life takes on new perspectives. As

we make room for God we begin to grow in appreciation for our world

and the people in it and wonder—

“What now for me?” The answer will always be about Love.

Contemplative Prayer and Study

7:30-8:00 p.m. Contemplative Prayer.

Communion. Guitar lead music in the Chapel

8:00-9:00 p.m. Contemplative Study in Rooms 204-205

We are studying “Poustinia: Encountering God in Silence, Solitude and Prayer” by Catherine Doherty.

May 8 - Chapter 13 Touching Neighbor

May 22 - Chapter 14 My Own Poustinik Vocation

Why the emphasis on contemplative Christianity? Simple. It is a proven practice that deepens our experi-

ence of God. It takes prayer from lists of needs and desires into a deepening relationship with God. There

is an experience of healing that accompanies this transformation. Give it a try!

MAYSUNDAYADULTFORUMs May is our last month for Adult Forum until autumn.

Right now we are gathering ideas for programming for 2019-2020. What type of program would YOU like to

see? Special topic? Special speaker? Let us know. The planning committee will be meeting in early June, so

let us know your ideas now.

We hope to see you after worship service one final time in May.

Sunday, May 12th

Please join in the Mother’s Day

Food Drive at St. Stephen’s— what a great way to honor our Moms, Grandmas,

Aunts, and other special women in our lives

and to spread their love!

Share a recipe from one of these special women along

with some or all of the ingredients. Don’t have a favorite recipe?

No worries. All food donations are appreciated and welcomed!

Blank recipe cards can be found by the Neighbors Food Shelf

collection box outside of Fellowship Hall. Recipes received will also be showcased there.

Join the fun—be creative! Questions? Please see Marilyn Erickson or Diane Merrill.

Our Lenten “Dipping into Hebrews” was our

second extended look into a book of the

Bible. Last August we “Dipped into Ephe-

sians.” The focus is to invite all members to

read a little section of the book every day

and to have a section of the book as the

basis for the preaching each Sunday. It has been a good emphasis

and we will do it again this August with the Letter to the Romans. Starting in June Rooted in the Word will

provide the first of three in depth look at Romans. It is important to have a study Bible to explain some of the

questions that always come up. St. Stephen’s recommends the Augsburg Fortress Study Bible with the New

Revised Standard Version but there are lots of excellent guides available, including online!

to the St Stephen's community

for responding so generously to our MN FoodShare food drive in

March. A total of 333 pounds of food and $6,180 was given which

was then donated to Neighbor's, Inc food shelf to help feed hungry

people in our community. - Missions Committee and Neighbor’s Inc.

May 21—Iftar Dinner 8PM

Masjid At-Taqwa Mosque

(Carpool from St. Stephen’s at 7:30pm)

One of the most fun events in our almost 6 year relationship with the

1608 Como Ave, St. Paul, is their hospitality around their Iftar Dinner. As part of their yearly prac-

tice of Ramadan, fasting from sun up to sun down for a month, is the evening break-fast. This year

our May gathering will be sharing this meal at the mosque. It is a wonderful introduction to our

relationship and is an excellent opportunity for children and first timers. Come hungry!

RSVP online on the Minnesota Council of Churches website: http://bit.ly/TakingHeartRegister. The

dinner is free but you must RSVP. Sign up early—space fills fast.

St. Stephen’s has the caring practice of

granting clergy a three month sabbatical

every 5 years. Pastor John will begin his

sabbatical on Sunday, June 30, returning

Sunday, September 22. For this period of

time Pastor Tim will serve as St. Stephen’s

full time pastor.

Augsburg University Centered Life Series continues with:

Three Sessions by Rev. Dr. Rollie Martinson on Elders Rising: The

Promise And Peril of Elderhood: “Vital and Resilient Aging: Living

Well and Making a Difference”

Sessions will be held at Luther Seminary in the Olson Center, Room 10

Wednesdays, May 1, May 15, and May 22, 2019 from noon to 1:15 p.m.

$15 per session or $45 for the series.

An “age wave” of enormous proportions and life-changing-impact is wash-

ing over us. Understanding this “age wave” provides older adults and those

closest to them more options for greater vitality and resiliency. Participants will come to better

understand aging and develop their own “pathway” of quality life during their senior years.

Congregational and community leaders will discover how their organizations can become

centers of expansive elder wellness and empowerment.

New Offerings at Discipleship Lab

Saturday, May 4th

Here’s the lineup for the next Discipleship Lab! As we work to build a full

and balanced “menu” of options for growing in faith, we’re offering four

new opportunities and also repeating the Bible Journaling lab that was so

well received from the last time. The descriptions are provided below.

Please register now so we can prepare the room and materials for you!

And thanks to everyone who participated in the interest survey – it really helped!

The Lab will run from 9 to 11 am on Saturday, May 4th. Please come at 8:45 to sign in and get some of the awe-

some refreshments! In the first hour we’ll have some conversation and teaching on discipleship with Pastor Tim,

and an introduction to the different Labs that you can choose from for the second hour. Each lab session will

give you what you need to explore further. You'll also be able to connect with others to work together and

encourage each other as you go (lab partners!) .

BIBLE JOURNALING will teach you a simple way to reflect on a daily reading to hear what the Lord might be

saying to you. Over time you'll build your own searchable treasure chest of insights and encouragements from

the Lord.

DEVOTIONAL RESOURCES will showcase print and online helps for daily devotions, as well as phone apps, with

an opportunity to “show and tell” which resources have been most valuable in your spiritual journey.

PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT presents a framework for understanding and exploring your unique role in

God’s world.

PRAYING WITH OTHERS helps you learn some simple ways to pray with and for other people that you can use to

become more comfortable with this important part of our spiritual life.

BIBLES FOR 3RD GRADERS is a faith milestone class specifically geared to 3rd graders and their families but is

open to any youth that have not received instruction or Bibles yet. This class will be during the second hour of

the Discipleship Lab (10-11) but all are invited and encouraged to attend the first hour as well!

To Register: Visit Bit.ly/DLabRegistration or scan the QR Code at right.

See you in the Lab!

#2

The Diversity tool is a simple idea that covers a lot of ground: people are different, and

that matters a lot. One of the places I’ve been using the Diversity tool is in designing the

Discipleship Lab. Since we are all at different places in our spiritual journeys, the lab is

working to offer a variety of growth opportunities in the hope that you’ll find something

right for where you’re at – as Pastor John likes to say, “your best, next step.” One of the

Labs this time around really digs into the idea of diversity itself and that’s the Personal

Mission Statement lab. In this lab, we’ll begin by exploring some of the things that we all

have in common in our “mission” from God. Then we’ll turn to the question of how to

get clarity on your unique role in God’s world. This lab is based on my own experience of trying to understand

“Why am I here?” in this life, or perhaps better put, “Lord, what is it that you want me to do?” Thinking that

through brought me to some really delightful surprises about my personal purpose! And the clarity I ended up

with has been a real, practical help to me ever since… about 20 years now! I’d be delighted to have you join

me for this lab on May 4th, or to see you in whichever lab might be the best, next step for you right now.

Blessings! - Pastor Tim

Easter is just behind us but the gift that we are given at Easter is

always with us. In Jesus, you and I have received an astounding

gift…..it is the gift of . A friend used these words recently

to help me remember the meaning: OD’S ICHES T HRIST’S

XPENSE. You and I can do nothing to earn his grace; it is a gift. A

gift that we were given when Jesus died and rose again for our sins.

Ephesians 2:8 says: For it is by grace you have been saved, through

faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” We have to follow Christ. We need

to develop a relationship with Our Father who has a plan for our life. He died for us, he lives

in us, and he's coming again.

Bega Kwa Bega Updates Iwonde ~ St. Stephen’s ~ Ihimbo

St. Stephen’s recently received the names of fifteen students from Ihimbo and Iwonde who are attending school in 2019 through scholarships provided by St. Stephen’s members. Please keep these students in your prayers (names listed above).

On behalf of these students, asante sana (thank you) for your support of this important aspect of our Bega Kwa Bega partnership. As we saw and heard from Roden and Ezekia during their visit to Minnesota in November, education not only benefits the students but also their families and communities. Both are former scholarship students and are now opening doors for their fami-lies, church, and other students as a farmer, parish secretary/treasurer, and chemistry teacher. The students listed above will have the same opportunity to make an impact because of the generosity of St. Stephen’s members.

Additional Bega Kwa Bega Updates Iwonde ~ St. Stephen’s ~ Ihimbo

A New Roof and Electricity! Ihimbo and Iwonde each receive $1,000 annually from St. Stephen’s benevolence giving. Iwonde plans to use these funds for a new church roof and electricity for Pastor Anania’s home. The church and parsonage are central to the life of the Iwonde congregation. These are exciting improvements that will enable everyone to better connect with God and each other. Communication Opportunity Would you like to send a message to your prayer partner in Tanzania? Let the members of Ihimbo and Iwonde know how you and St. Stephen’s were touched by the visit of Pastor Yona, Roden, and Ezekia in November? Or simply send a message of love and prayer to the Ihimbo and Iwonde congregations?

We have the opportunity to send notes and letters to our friends in Ihimbo and Iwonde with a group from Prince of Peace in Roseville who are traveling to Tanzania in June. Please give your letters to Tracy Westman, Beth Hostager, or the church office by May 31st. Due to luggage limitations, no gifts or larger packages can be included.

A picture and message from Pastor Yona in Tanzania:

“See how that Avocado we planted together last year is growing at Utengule” When Beth and I traveled to Tanzania last summer we planted an avocado tree (about 8” high) at each preaching point. The children in each village were given the task of tending the tree! Pastor Yona sent a picture of one of the trees (which is much bigger now!) that has been lovingly tended and is thriving. This is the same we need to do with the children at St. Stephen’s---they have been planted with us and we need to tend them, in-teract with them and watch them grow so they can thrive in their faith and learn about God’s GRACE! As Ezekia said to us,

“God is good all the time, All the time God is good.”

Neighbors, Inc. is not only our community foodshelf—it’s that and a whole lot more. Did you know that Neigh-

bors, Inc. services Inver Grove Heights, South Saint Paul, West Saint Paul, Mendota Heights, Mendota, Sunfish

Lake and Lilydale. That’s a lot of folks! Neighbors provides both supportive and emergency services. In addi-

tion to the Food Shelf they sponsor the Summer Meals Program, Clothes Closet, Holiday Gift Program, Come as

You Are Program for adults with developmental disabilities, and the Dial-A-Ride program to name a few.

Here’ the scoop on the Dial-A-Ride program.

Neighbors’ transportation program provides rides to persons who

have no other readily available way of keeping medical or dental

appointments, counseling appointments or similar necessary

appointments. Volunteer drivers, using their own vehicles, pick up

passengers at their homes, take them to their appointments, wait

for them to finish their appointment, and then take them home

again.

More Neighbors news to share: Neighbors, Inc. needs our help

now more than ever. Neighbors, Inc. has been notified by The

Greater Twin Cities United Way that they have chosen not to fund

Neighbors Inc. Food Shelf as of July 1, 2019. This will result in an

estimated loss of $89,000 of support. Please consider making a cash contribution to the Food Shelf periodically

throughout the year in addition to your food and hygiene product donations. Together we can make a differ-

ence in our communities.

If you need help or would like to volunteer please call Neighbors, Inc. at 651-455-5000.

Loaves and Fishes After 15+ years of organizing St. Stephen’s efforts

to serve at Loaves and Fishes, our wonderful

leader, Ann Anderson, is stepping back. Ann has

done a great job of calmly and efficiently keep-

ing us in line! Thank you Ann! Thank you for

remaining an active member of the group. This

photo is of a thank you gathering of part of the

Loaves and Fishes team.

Thanks also to Marti Bonk for stepping into the

role of coordinator on our behalf. If you would

like to volunteer or have questions regarding the

Loaves & Fishes program Marti can be reached

at 651-303-6284.

Each month our dedicated Loaves & Fishes

volunteers from St. Stephen's respond to Jesus'

call to feed the hungry by preparing and serving

a meal to hungry people in our community.

Join our St. Stephen’s group Tuesday, May 14. to

prepare dinner, serve and clean up. Come for

the whole evening or just part. We serve at St.

Matthew’s Church located at 490 Hall Street, in

St. Paul.

The evening schedule is:

2-5pm Preparation, 5-6pm Serving,

6-7pm Clean Up.

Questions - please call Marti Bonk

at 651-303-6284.

Did you miss worship this past Sunday? Just want to experience it again or rehear the sermon? We have

two options for you. Thanks to Norm Goetzke DVDs of recent worship services can be found at the

Connection Center. Also, located in the Resources / Media tab on our website you can find audio files of

the Sunday sermons.

Are you, or do you know someone that can’t get to church but would like to receive a weekly DVD copy of

the service? Please contact the church office to be added to the mailing list.
