Unit: Transformation Date: Monday 6/1/2020 Question of the day:Remind your child of the word transformation. Ask them, “How do things in nature change?” Discuss how plants, animals, insects, weather, seasons, and time change. Introduce the word metamorphosis. Explain how a butterfly goes through a metamorphosis or a transformation. Art: Provide your child with glue, paper, cotton balls, scissors, tin foil, tissue paper, glitter glue, paint, pom poms and markers at the table. Encourage your child to create their own “weather art.” Divide the paper into two or four sections for them, depending on their interest in the activity and attention span. Ask them to make 2, 3 or 4 different types of weather. When they are finished ask them to tell you about their art work. You can also ask , “Why did you choose to make these types of weather?” “What did you do first? second? last?” “How does weather change?” “If you could make one of these types of weather differently, how would you change it?” They can share their work during tomorrow’s zoom session! Computer: Open up starfall.com for your child. Click “Kindergarten and Pre-K”, then “Learn to read.” Allow your child to choose a short story to listen to. When finished, ask them which story they listened to. Talk about what happened in the story. Then, talk about the words in the story. What changed about the words that rhymed? What did you notice about the letters and the sounds? Can you take one of the rhyming words from the story, and name or write some other words that sound the same? How do you have to change the word to make it rhyme? Story Time/ Read Aloud: The following books can be found on the Epic Books website under assignments: How does Weather Change? and I Can Change Matter. Allow your child to choose one of the two books to read with you, or on their own. When the book is finished, ask your child to draw a picture about something they learned. Then, encourage them to tell you about their picture. Extend the discussion by asking other how and why questions such as “Why does it rain?” or “How can you change water into ice?” “What is matter?” Music: Play the following youtube video about different instrument sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kgpy-m9B6s Think of a body movement to accompany the sound. Then, replay one of the song for your child and have them move their body according to the sound they heard. How were you able to change your body? If your child does better with visuals, you could use the attached action cards as examples. You would just have to assign a sound to each movement. Outdoor Activity: Go for a bike/scooter ride, or a nice walk. Notice any changes around you, including with your own body. What did you notice? (you can change your speed, your direction, the way you move, your heart rate changes, your body temperature changes, the weather can change, the amount of light changes- but why?, etc) In addition, please have your child : practice writing his/her first and last name (identifying the letters and sounds as well) continue working on happynumbers.com, as you see fit for your child

Question of the day: Play the following songs for your child: vhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKJNRBhCTjY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkpnRvCLRRA When the songs are finished, you can ask your child, “What do you know about weather and seasons? How do they transform or change?” Discuss the different types of weather and seasons (sun, rain, snow, sleet, hail, wind, hot, cold, winter, spring, summer, fall) How do the seasons change? How can you tell a different season is beginning? How do you make changes during different types of weather and seasons?

Science: Show your child the photos of the Life Cycle of a butterfly, as well as the pictures of various types of butterflies. Talk about how some insects come from eggs and how they change over time. If you can print the pages, encourage your child to cut out the pictures and paste them in the order that a butterfly transforms. If you cannot print, you can have your child verbally tell you which is the first, second, third and last stage of their metamorphosis. They could also draw their own depictions of each stage! After, ask your child which animals or insect they would like to learn more about. Use the computer to look up facts about the life cycle and have your child draw a picture and label the different parts of the life cycle. (For example: egg, larva, pupa, ladybug)

Toys and Games: Allow your child to complete a puzzle. How did the puzzle change from when you first started? What did you have to do to complete the puzzle? If you do not have puzzles, you can use this website and have your child choose a puzzle to complete: https://www.digipuzzle.net/main/kids/

Story Time/ Read Aloud: Play the following read aloud of What Do You Do With an Idea? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIbjVGFSCvk Before playing the read aloud, ask your child “What is an idea?” After they answer, reiterate that an idea is a thought. You can then ask, “What do you think you can do with a thought?” Then, play the book. As you read, ask the children questions about what they would do with an idea. How did the boys idea change? When the story is finished, write down some ideas the children have or have them draw a picture. Talk about how everything was once an idea, but then helped change the world. (Saving trees, recycling, the invention of electricity, the telephone, computers, farming, recipes, dish washers, washing machines, schools)

Music: Play this video of different instrument sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjJcGlQraek Then, listen to music of your choice. How does the music change? What instruments do you hear? Paint, draw, sculpt or create a collage while listening to music.

Outdoor Activity: Complete an outdoor activity of your choice: catch, relay race, soccer, tag, hide and seek, bubbles, hopscotch. How can you change your speed, how you throw, the shapes of bubbles (can you?!), your direction, your body movements, your hiding spots, etc.

In addition, please have your child : • practice writing his/her first and last name (identifying the letters and sounds as well) • continue working on happynumbers.com, as you see fit for your child

Unit: Transformation Date: Wednesday 6/3/2020

Question of the day: Remind your child about our Light Unit Study. Ask them, “How does light change? Do you remember anything about natural light?” Discuss the different types of natural light (sun, moon, stars) Then ask, “How do day and night change? How do you change what you do during the day from what you do at night?”

Blocks: Give your child blue paper (or an color you have available), scissors, blocks or any building material you have (boxes, legos, tubes, recycled materials, etc) Have them cut blue paper into different sizes, and pretend it is water. Make sure that they have at least one wide, one thin, one long and one short. Ask them if they can think of a way to cross the water. Discuss the concept of a bridge or tunnel. After they build one, ask “How do you have to change this bridge, if it was over this body of water?”

Sensory: For this activity you need: a bowl or bin, a spoon, 1 1/2 cups of cornstarch and 1 cup of water, food coloring and essential oil/extract is optional. Place the ingredients out and allow your child to explore each. How do you think we can change these materials? Allow your child to first mix the cornstarch and water. “What do you notice happening?” After it it well mixed, allow your child to explore the mixture. “How does it feel? Can you pick it up? What happens when you pick some up with a spoon? Do you think it will drip? Why or why not? How does the substance change from when you held it flat to when you tipped the spoon? How can we change the color of the mixture? How can we change the scent?”

Story Time/ Read Aloud: Play Ms. Isabel’s read aloud of The Grouchy Ladybug, which was emailed to you today. Ms. Isabel will ask questions during the book. But, when the read aloud is finished, you can ask your child what they remember about the book. What changes did you notice? (If you have never read the book these are some things that change: the time, the animals, the size of the animals, the grouchy ladybugs mood in the end.) How did the Grouchy Ladybug change in the end? Your child can draw or paint a picture of their favorite part of the book, or their favorite animal in the book.

Music: Play the following song for your child to dance to. Talk about how they changed the position of their body and their speed. Have fun trying to cross the bridge to get away from the troll! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9WAGkQUUL0

Outdoor Activity: Take some paper and drawing materials outside. Look at the flowers, trees, plants and grass around you. Think about how they change over time. Draw or paint a picture of what you think the life cycle of a flower, tree or plant looks like.

In addition, please have your child : • practice writing his/her first and last name (identifying the letters and sounds as well) • continue working on happynumbers.com, as you see fit for your child

Question of the day: Tell your child that just like day changes to night, and weather and seasons change, daily activities change too. Remind them of when they were in the classroom. Ask them what changes they remember happening during the day. (they can change their center, activities change, attendance changes, flow of day changes- breakfast to circle time, circle time to center time, center time to story time, etc.) Draw a picture of our classroom!

Math: Let’s learn about symmetry! Using the photos attached, have your child examine the butterfly wings. Talk about what they notice. If they do not already do so, point out that the wings are the same on each side. They are symmetrical. You can demonstrate symmetry by drawing a picture and cutting it in half. Hold one half up to a mirror. Symmetry is also a mirror image. Have your child look around your home for items that are symmetrical. How many can you find?

Dramatic Play: Provide your child with various clothing, costumes and accessories. They can be various sizes as well, and then family members can play along. Talk about what a disguise is. You can say, “Let’s make a disguise. Let’s transform ourselves and try to guess what we changed!” Have your child go first. Take pictures of your different disguises!

Story Time/ Read Aloud: Play Ms. Schoeps’ read aloud of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which was emailed to you today. I will ask questions while reading. If you have the book at home, and would prefer to read it to your child, you can stop at the appropriate parts and ask, “What do you think is going to happen next? How is the caterpillar changing? What do you think it will transform into?” Also, as you read, focus on how the numbers change, the fruit changes, the size of the caterpillar changes, the days of the week change, etc.) When the read aloud or your story time is finished, provide your child with paper and art materials to create their favorite part of the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Why was this your favorite part?

Music:Play the following song about butterflies. What are the 4 stages of a butterfly’s metamorphosis or transformation? How did you change your body to portray each stage? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EQeYA5Qbic

Outdoor Activity: Go for another bike/scooter ride, or a nice walk. Notice any changes around you, including with your own body. What did you notice? (you can change your speed, your direction, the way you move, your heart rate changes, your body temperature changes, the weather can change, the amount of light changes- but why?, etc) How did the weather change from when you were outside yesterday and from your ride on Monday?

In addition, please have your child : • practice writing his/her first and last name (identifying the letters and sounds as well) • continue working on happynumbers.com, as you see fit for your child
