WHY IS ORIENTATION FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS IMPORTANT?
In 1975, about 18 percent of high school completers enrolled at a 2-year college immediately after high school, while 26 percent did so in 2011.

What we know about Transfers…
Numbers are Growing o Almost 60% of students who graduating from 4-yr institutions began at a different
institution o Almost 1/3 of college students have transferred at least once
Graduation Rates Compared to Native Students o Transfers are less likely to graduate in 4 years o Transfers are just as likely to complete a degree program
There is much Diversity within Transfer Population o Types of transfer experience (traditional, lateral, reverse, swirling) o Number of earned credits, educational aspirations, length of time between
educational experiences o Age, outside commitments (work, family), first-generation status, ethnic diversity

ORIENTATION…
Universities and Colleges have been orientating students since the 19th Century.
Transfer Orientation is a “New” evolution of providing a separate need/learning program(s) for these students transitioning to a new campus.
As the population of Transfer Students increases – the need to provide services and programs to assist in their transition is so important.
Marling and Jacobs (2004)
ORIENTATION NEED…
Mullendore and Banahan (2005) – “Orientation can be the defining moment in the transition to college for the student – at time in which basic habits are formed that influence students academic success and personal growth – it marks he beginning of a “NEW” educational experience.”
WHAT DO TRANSFER STUDENTS THINK ABOUT ORIENTATION AT THEIR 2ND OR 3RD INSTITUTION?
What do you think Transfer Students say when they hear they have to attend orientation at their 2nd or 3rd institution?
Do we mandate or make the orientation program optional?
They want the recognition that they have experienced college before!
Marling and Jacobs (2004)

New Student Success Series
*Going to work on a Transfer Newsletter – will go

HELP THEM THRIVE
Offer them services…
Hear them…
Adjust to their needs to enable them to THRIVE!
FINAL THOUGHT…
If you look at a Tuition Bill are there any differences in cost when you compare a First-Year students vs. Transfer? There is little to no difference in the amount of money a Transfer Student pays.
So why are they not offered the same services, programming, and support to be successful?
