Intangible heritage of
Butrint, Second Phase
More on page 2
In 2014, an oral history project
was carried out in four villages
surrounding Butrint. The main
aim of the project was to ex-
tend the historical knowledge
of the site through memories
of people that could be used
to provide resources for local
schools and visitors to the site.More on page 3
As the last researches have shown during the Venetian adminis-
tration of Butrint a quite dense network of settlements and con-
nections between them were constructed. All the places were
named in Italian (Venetian), some of them with the names of
saints. Interesting among these constructions was the settlementof Zarapouli, St. Dimitri hill today.

Archaeological survey ofSt. Dimitri, Butrint
As the last research have shown during the Venetian administration of Butrint a quite
dense network of settlements and connec tions between them were constructed. Interest-
ing among these constructions was the settlement of Zarapouli. The site of Zarapouli
was located on the southern slope of the hill of St. Dimitri, where the church of the
same saint and white cross are visible today. According to the old maps, principally
the Gonemi family’s grant map, Zaropouli was situated inside of the Venetian border
while Xarra was in the o ttoman territory. Despite support of historical evidence on this,
Zarapouli seemed to have been an Ottoman village, same as Xarra
The project is funded by the Butrint Foundation and attempts to elucidate the key posi-
tion of this area in the history of Butrint. As result, the project aims to:
•Assessing the topography of St. Dimitri hill and preparing a chronological map on
site’s usage on different periods.
•Analysing changes in settlement and landscape that took place to the southeast of
Butrint during the Venetian and Ottoman eras.
•Clarifying the relations be tween Zarapouli settlement and Xarra village during the Ve-
netian enclave an d afterwards.
•Adding results to the ong oing research work on L ater Butrint at Ali Pasha’s Castle, Tri-
angular Fortress, Surve y of Venetian Villas and other studies related to this period.
