LIONSLIONS
The International Association of The International Association of Lions ClubsLions Clubs
A Dream of a Chicago Insurance man
Melvin JonesMelvin Jones (born in 1879)
He wondered why Local Business Clubs could not expand their horizons from purely business concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large.
His idea generated an interest.
They authorised him to explore his concept.
He asked,
“What if these men who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities?”
His efforts resulted in an organizational
meeting at a local hotel on 77--JuneJune--1917.1917.
12 men gathered and voted the “The
Indiana-based Association of Lions
Clubs” into existence.
Aim: To create an association for
humanitarian services.
88--10 October 191710 October 1917
The First International convention held in Dallas, Texas,
USA to define what LIONISMLIONISM was.
36 delegates representing 23 clubs from 9 states in USA.
Elected Dr. William P. Woods of Indiana as the First
President and Melvin Jones as the Secretary.
LIONSLIONS accepted as namename, Objects and Code of Ethicsdrafted
Guiding Principle since 1917:
"No Club shall by its constitution and by-laws, or otherwise
hold out the financial betterment of its members as its objects."
Vision Statement:Vision Statement:To be the global leader in community and
humanitarian service.
Mission Statement:Mission Statement:To empower volunteers to serve their
communities, meet humanitarian needs,
encourage peace and promote
international understanding through
Lions clubs.

Lions International Objects
To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the
world.
To Promote the principle of good government and good citizenship.
To Take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of
the community.
To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual
understanding.
To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest;
provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be
debated by club members.
To Encourage service-minded people to serve their community without
personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high
ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and
private endeavours.
Lions Code of EthicsLions Code of EthicsTo Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may
merit a reputation for quality of service.
To Seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no
profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or
because of questionable acts on my part.
To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be
loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.
Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve
such doubts against myself.
To Hold friendship as an end and not a means.
To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one another, but that
true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.
Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, as
to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labour
and means.
To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to
the needy.
To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.
Melvin Jones (1879 Melvin Jones (1879 -- 1961)1961)

1930: Historical Highlights1930: Historical Highlights• Lion George A. Bonham observed a blind man trying
to cross a busy street as traffic whirled about him.
• The man tapped furiously on the pavement with his
black cane, but no one understood his problem.
• Lion Bonham came up with the idea of supplying blind
people with white canes to alert others, and he
introduced a resolution to the city of Peoria to give the
right-of-way to any blind person using a white cane.
• From this humble beginning, by 1956 every state in
the United States had passed white cane safety laws
which included those blind persons employing the
help of guide dogs.
