A peek at some of the classes you will seeClosing the Door on Violence (Tuesday 1:00 PM)

”HELP! I have to do a Workplace Violence talk and I do not have a presentation.” Have you been in a predicament like that? If so, never fear…Dr. Kim is here to help you!

Workplace violence (WPV) is a complex threat that can occur in businesses, non-profit organizations, government agencies, medical facilities and houses of worship. There are over 2 million workers who are victims of violence every year. Over 700 employees are murdered annually. Many of the mass murders have domestic violence connections. As Crime Prevention Practitioners you may be called upon to do WPV training for any one of these types of workplaces and it could range from a 20 minute luncheon for hoteliers, 1 hour for house of worship staff, or a 2 hour mandatory in-service seminar for medical workers. In addition, offering to conduct a CPTED survey for the location is another way you can help mitigate WPV. Each of these workplaces has unique risks, threats, and needs. Violence Response is not a “cookie-cutter” formula but you can shape this program to fit any need.

“Closing the Door on Violence” will provide you with generalized workplace violence information that you can tailor to the unique workplaces that request your expertise for helping keep their employees safe. This 2 hour Train the Trainer conference PPT presentation touches on all the basics of WPV within the framework of the 4 P’s (Plan, Prepare, Practice, and Protect). This easy to remember outline can help you keep on track for a 20 min talk without the aid of a PPT or for a longer program using this PPT. You will receive both a 2 hour and 1 hour PPT, videos and handouts so you can feel confident when asked to talk about WPV no matter the location. “Closing the Door on Violence” touches on employee violence awareness, when domestic violence comes to the workplace, keeping front desk workers safe, recognizing escalating warning behavior, de-escalating an angry customer, what and how to report suspicious behavior, and options for survival during an active violence event.

Operation Secure Store(Wednesday 3:00 PM)

The criminals show no hesitation. Smashing through store fronts or even concrete constructed walls, often using stolen vehicles, all in an effort to steal as many firearms as possible in less than one to two minutes.

Firearm theft from licensed retailers has become increasingly common, according to data released by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and it’s happening all across the country. Stealing from those that are most likely to be armed in their place of business would seem like a bad idea to most as well, but not everybody got that memo either and robberies of firearms retailers are up significantly as well.

In 2012, there was a total of 5,762 guns stolen in America, according to the ATF. Last year, that number jumped to 9,281. That includes guns taken in robberies, burglaries and simple larcenies. In the same period, the number of gun shop robberies, defined as thefts committed during business hours with staff present, increased by 175 percent.

That is why the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry have announced the launch of Operation Secure Store (OSS), a comprehensive joint initiative to lend support to Federal Firearms Licensees (FFL) in their efforts to make well-informed security-related decisions to deter and prevent thefts.

Pretty Loaded(Tuesday 3:00 PM)

Five years ago, I was the mother of four daughters and I was with two of them when I felt as if I was about to be attacked. Not knowing what to do to diffuse the situation, I froze. In that moment, I failed, and when I fail, I take corrective action to not let that situation play out again. I started to research criminal minds and learned about their strategies. I also stumbled upon situational awareness, body language, and took some martial arts classes. I came up with the idea of empowering others to become “their own first responders” and Pretty Loaded launched in 2014. Awareness of key techniques can have a profound effect on your personal safety. We educate our audience about predator mindset and tactics used by criminals to pursue their intended victims. Our training presentation will teach you about conflict avoidance and provide the tools to detect, dissuade and defeat a predator.

As a result of attending our two hour Pretty Loaded Situational Awareness Training session, all participants will have the ability to put the following training into immediate use:

• Understand the Imperative of Becoming Aware• Apply Strategies for Self-Defense• Utilize Important Tips to Stay Out of Harm’s Way

The story of how Pretty Loaded went from an idea inspiring a group of ten people interested in their personal safety to reaching hundreds of millions of people worldwide is inspiring, uplifting, empowering, and fun. We are a globally recognized self-defense and situational awareness company that has a profound effect on minimizing violent attack incidents by educating and empowering people to be situationally aware and prepared to be their own first responder. Safety and security are basic human needs and we are awakening people to the need for self-protection as a lifestyle and not a trend.

Youth Crime Watch(Monday 3:15 PM)

The Youth Crime Watch breakout session (workshop) at the FCPA Conference will provide education to attendees on incorporating a viable and model Youth Crime Watch (YCW) program in their schools. It will be presented by Joel Mesa, an education director & school coordinator of Citizens’ Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County. Joel has been a certified crime prevention practitioner since 2001. The session will present a model 10-step “phase by phase” structure on implementing the YCW program in a school setting. It also will present on the importance of partnering with law enforcement for a youth crime watch (ycw) school program to be successful. It will present sample activities and campaigns that YCW school programs (clubs) can coordinate in their schools, and their effectiveness in preventing youth crime in a school environment. The YCW breakout session will also engage the attendees with interactive discussions on youth crime prevention and youth empowerment in cultivating safe school settings. It will also present some sample methods & resources that can be incorporated when educating youth on various youth crime prevention topics.

True Colors(Tuesday 3:00 PM)

Do you communicate in color?

Many years ago, I studied a communication tool entitled True Colors. Although True Colors is considered a personality assessment, when mastered and used effectively, it is the most powerful method I have experienced for communicating, avoiding conflict, and enabling you to work well with others - your boss, colleagues, citizens, professional association members, teachers at your child’s school, or your own family. I employ True Colors every day in every situation I encounter in my professional and personal life.

Based on science that dates back centuries and continues to be proven as still applicable in modern day, True Colors categorizes people into four dominant personality types – green, gold, blue, and orange. Each personality type has positive and negative communication traits. When you learn the traits, you better understand how each type communicates and needs to be communicated with for maximum effectiveness. Do you feel like someone is listening to you but not hearing you? Do you feel like you say the same thing over and over, yet it doesn’t get through to the person you’re saying it to? Do you feel like your instructions make perfect sense to you, but the person you’re instructing looks at you like you’re an alien? True Colors, applied carefully and correctly, can help you communicate in a way that works for every person every time.

True Colors Benefit #1: You better understand yourself and your typical communication methods. Having knowledge about your positive and negative personality and communication traits helps when you realize you’re getting stressed, and your negative dominant personality traits surface.

True Colors Benefit #2: You better understand others and their typical communication methods. People you work and live with will not have the same knowledge you have after learning True Colors, so it’s up to you to employ the knowledge to the best of your ability, and temper your communication style to fit whomever you’re dealing with. When you know and understand the characteristics of the other dominant personality types, you can spot them in others, and take them into consideration when you communicate with that person. If you know that someone has a tendency to hear something a certain way and react a certain way, you can temper the information you present, thus influencing the person’s response or reaction to be positive rather than negative.

So, how do you begin to communicate in color? Attend my workshop at the Florida Crime Prevention Conference in October! I look forward to seeing you.

CCTV System and its importance

CCTV stands for Closed-Circuit Television. It is actually a television but it does not receive any external signals (free-to-air television programs) but rather it only receives its own and records the same, hence the words closed-circuit.Aside from the external and internal of the buildings or structures where there were no blind spots, all angles are literally covered, all of their street corners are lined with cameras. Some have built in lights and some have infra-red lights but all are encased in protective covers

THE NEED FOR CCTV SYSTEM

The purpose of the CCTV system is to augment the security method of a particular establishment. It is one of the vital factors in deterrence and in some countries, admissible in court as evidence because of its default watermark system built into the software. CCTV however is not and should not be a replacement of physical security. Security personnel at any time and any place is the most reliable security technique, paired with proper training and information dissemination, an irreparable living company property. It is sad to note that some company’s insight on physical security do think of the former, removing on-site personnel where cameras are located to reduce cost.

The CCTV system is not for the invasion of privacy as some people think. Placing a camera in offices is a matter of corporate policy. Especially if it is placed in sensitive offices such as the finance office, SDB rooms, general cashier or at cash register and counters. Mostly it is placed in public places where people meet and convene, hallways, parking areas, entrances and exit locations and even on the roads.

With the rising technology nowadays, CCTV systems are more reliable, cheaper and a variety of ways to install it with user-friendly interface with options as wireless or internet based. The old system I operated on were magnetic tape based recording, otherwise known as the

VHS (video home system) cassette recorder (VCR). The cameras and the playback were in black and white. The most tedious thing about it is that you have to control it manually. It means that after all the tape is used, you have to eject the tape, rewind it on a separate rewind-er, place it back and then press record, log the order of recording, date and time. Then there is the dreary function of playback review where you get hazy, blurry event as the tapes are mostly over dubbed, receding the pictures thus most of the time, rendered the review useless.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CCTV SYSTEM

There is no guideline for choosing the right system but the more expensive you purchase the more reliable it is in terms of after-sales for hardware problems, warranty and 24-hour technical assistance. Expensive systems also include survey and installation of the whole unit. Small and medium business owners may also elect stand-alone, packaged or bundled systems. The susceptibility, sensitivity and the size of the protected site, blind spots in the building and other areas for consideration may also play a big role in choosing a system.

Consider the following points:

• Reliability and stability of the unit- huge storage system and digital recording, including the number of cameras or channels in one recorder

• Ease of operation- saving a particular file onto a platform, including wide array of format, user friendly settings, exterior buttons or controls are simple

• Bundled software- for special features of the system such as, but not necessarily available, face

Continued on Page 9

identification, animate object alarms, forwarding an alarm signal to a cellular phone, and other plug-in ready hardware

• Software technical support- in case the main OS and other programs system fails, one can still recover all files being recorded and have the system up and running in no time

Camera units can be replaced or repaired at any time as it does not alter the whole function. One should note though that if any one of the cameras become defective and due for repair, a temporary stand-by camera should be installed to continue recording and monitoring. It is also good to have a secondary back-up recording or storage devices in case the main system bogs down.

But the core reasons for the necessity is the person/ entity who believes in the impact of its deterrence, unraveling future incident and secondly, the budget any entity can expend.

INSTALLING THE CCTV SYSTEM

There are CCTV systems sold that includes full installation up until a week of testing and termination as well as there are also for intermediate persons applicable for DIY (Do It Yourself) system. A certified technician, not necessarily a computer or engineering graduate but a radio communications and network associate will suffice for installations of more than 8 channels or cameras CCTV System. Since 9 to 16 and even 32 cameras require longer and numerous wires. A sound proficiency in system power supply, signals, and static interference is crucial in conducting an installation.

Inept installers should be avoided as the purpose of the purchase of the CCTV is retreated and therefore useless and ruin the expenditures. Cameras should be installed in areas where it was meant to be, unobstructed view and is not partially or fully blocked by a natural landscape or structure, away from shrubbery, viewing a wide coverage, glare-proof at any time of the day, height and distance in relation to clear and unobscured images. Likewise, installation should be supervised and monitored by a security expert realizing adeuqate as well as maximizing angle or coverage.

It also appropriate that installing the unit should also be considered, the following:

1. CCTV room- or the place where the particular recorder and monitor units will be installed should be secluded, confidential and only accessible to authorized persons.

2. CCTV Operator- whether we like it or not, the operator is part of the system. Much like the telephone operator, the CCTV personnel should know how the system functions and should be intermediate if not, adept in technical troubleshooting skills.

3. The cameras – placing the cameras is of utmost significance and should not de-valuate the deterrent factor. Others install it for the sake of putting it there albeit some install CCTV casing with no working camera in it. Camera unit should be able to view digital (HD, 720p or 1080p) images. Infra-red (IR) for night time purposes is a plus.

4. Wiring and casing- one has to know that the system operates on power and signal thus most installation were taken aback when CCTV wires are installed near or passing through other power lines (electrical). The wiring should be encased in static-free insulation and hidden from observation of people. For out in the open, steel pipe should encase the wiring.

5. Power supply back up system- adequate power supply system is essential to the CCTV system. Correct power supply should reach up to the farthest camera installed. Sometimes a technician attaches a gadget called a “balloon” onto the wiring for longer wires and farther installed camera unit, to enhance power supply and signal. A power backup supply may be indispensable for a set of system that is aside from the temporary supply such as generators. UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) is also good for a small CCTV system of up to 16 cameras but the presence of both is flawless. Backup power supply system should involve power continuum for all the cameras, recorders and monitors.

Protecting kids from identity theft

Identity theft cases are becoming more common, especially among kids. Get the facts about child identity theft to protect your little one’s personal information. Identity theft occurs when criminals unlawfully gain access to someone’s personal information and steal it for their own financial gain. Whether it’s using somebody’s social security number to open new accounts or illegally hacking into a bank account, all forms of identity theft can be serious and have different outcomes. It’s not a new problem, but with so much of our personal information stored electronically these days, this crime is happening more often, especially to children.

Data about the prevalence of child identity theft victims is limited, in part because children don’t become aware that their personal data has been stolen until they are old enough to apply for a driver’s license or a credit card. More than 1 million children had their identities stolen in 2017, according to a study conducted by Javelin Strategy and Research and sponsored by Identity Guard. The study also found that 66% of child ID theft victims are under the age of 8—more than 10 years away from being able to sign a legal contract.

How Can My Child’s Identification Be Stolen?

A child’s identity can be stolen when criminals create what is known as a “synthetic identity,” a process by which crooks “combine a child’s Social Security number (SSN) with a different date of birth. This to be the most common method of child identity fraud. Using an actual SSN, the most crucial piece of every American’s identity confuses the credit issuers and they think it’s a new person.

Approximately 60% of child victims know the identity thief. Indeed, 22% of these frauds are perpetrated by a parent or a stepparent. Other relatives, including uncles, cousins, and siblings, account for 10% of the frauds. The most common perpetrators are “family friends.”

How Is Child Identity Theft Different From Adult Identity Theft?

Child identity theft is a crime in which criminals have specifically targeted children for personal data such as their SSN, date of birth, and name. Children are being targeted more because their info is more difficult to detect, so it’s more lucrative. When an unauthorized person uses your credit card number to make unauthorized purchases, most banks will contact you the moment they suspect suspicious activity. But when an unauthorized person uses your child’s name successfully to get a credit card—either by using a pre-approved card offer stolen from a mailbox or by creating a synthetic identity and applying for a new card—it is highly unlikely that anyone will contact you. As far as the bank or credit bureau is concerned, the false identity is real because thieves use a child’s clean slate to establish a new credit history.

October 2018

Why Is Child Identity Theft Important?

When an adult has her identity stolen, it can affect her credit history for years. Imagine if your child has a bad credit report before she is old enough to read, or she goes to the DMV to apply for her first driver’s license and is surprised with a bill for hundreds of dollars in unpaid tickets. The FTC recommends that parents check to see if their child has a credit report when she turns 16 to avoid that unpleasant surprise. Or consider a more frightening scenario related to medical records of someone in your area stealing your child’s information.

If you happen to visit the same hospital where the identity thief had a medical procedure, by the time you take your child to the same place, the blood type and allergic medication may be changed.
