Jan O’Halloran has over 20 years experience working in the field of supervisory and leadership development.

This includes periods where

she has undertaken a variety

of management roles herself

to ensure that her training is

reinforced by the credibility of

experience. Her experience

crosses the public, private and not for profit sectors.

Jan is currently undertaking a Masters in Business

Leadership and holds a Graduate Diploma in Business,

Diploma of Management, a Certificate IV in TAE and

possesses Advanced Facilitation Skills.

CCI’s Frontline Management program (see pages 4

and 8 of this edition) is facilitated by Jan and participants

can select to undertake either a Certificate IV in Frontline

Management or Diploma in Management.

Prepare to promote and retainby Jan O’Halloran

The move to a management role can be an exciting challenge, largely because it may signify the start of a steady climb up the corporate ladder.

If you are expecting or considering a career move into

management, transitioning into the supervisory functions of these

roles may also mean a shift in your relationships with colleagues,

especially those who will report to you.

Your success in taking on a supervisory or management

role will often depend on how well you can build positive

working relationships with your direct reports while maintaining

a clear view of your role as a manager on the frontline of your

organisation.

Support from a trusted mentor or professional development

via a formal training program in the lead up to and during the early

stages of your move can make a big difference to the length of

time it takes you to adjust and succeed in your new role.

There are likely many individuals within your firm who

have also had to navigate new relationships with co-workers

after moving into management roles – speak to them about

challenges they’ve faced and how they overcame them.

In preparing for transition from a peer to a supervisory

management position, considering the following four areas will be

a very good start:

1. Where will your focus lie?Rather than concentrating on the quality of your own

work and productivity levels, you will be responsible for

the performance of others. Delegation, performance

management and ‘big-picture’ thinking are essential skills for

supervisory success.

2. How will you communicate?Good communication skills are crucial for effective

staff supervision and you must maintain open lines of

communication with your employees. This means that

listening is an essential and often time-consuming function of

any supervisory position.

3. How will you relate to your co-workers?Changing from employee to supervisor is hard going. Some

of your co-workers could feel that they deserved the position

more than you and others may be less open with you now

that you are ‘the boss’.

4. How will you set professional boundaries? Understanding the everyday responsibilities of your new

position is the easy part... the subtleties of your role are often

much harder to gauge. For example, is it still appropriate for

you to go out with the team after work? Should you enter the

team’s footy-tipping competition? Are you allowed to joke with

colleagues like you’ve always done? Although there are no

universal answers to questions like these, one thing is clear

– you will need to set new boundaries as a supervisor.

Becoming a frontline manager is a big step on your path

to career advancement – it’s important you don’t let a poorly

executed transition derail your progress.

By setting boundaries, communicating with your team,

seeking out appropriate development opportunities and sourcing

guidance from others who’ve been there before, you’ll ensure

your move from peer to supervisor is a successful one.

9 Steps to Great Presentations

Whether you present staff training, sales pitches or conference keynotes, you’ll need a plan and structure to create your presentation. This one-day course is the perfect partner to ‘Speaking for Strength’, but also stands alone.

A presentation that is well organised from the start adds to your confidence and maximises your power to achieve planned outcomes. This highly interactive course encourages participants to bring along a current or future presentation opportunity to work on directly during the day.

This course will help anyone who delivers information at work or in their private life. Every aspect of this course can be applied immediately – whether a 15-minute staff meeting or a full day conference presentation.

Introduction to Project Management

Many organisations rely on a constant flow of projects for their survival, and projects often provide the only means for organisations to deliver change, by solving problems or seizing opportunities to achieve strategic objectives.

Projects are special. They’re finite, unique, risky, they involve temporary teams and focus on specific results that bring about change. Consequently, they need a special management approach – project management.

Project management is a core business process in all organisations and this course provides practical, interactive, hands-on instruction on using several project management tools you can use in the workplace.

Personal Development and Professional Skills

Time and Stress Management

Finding time for everything we need to do is one of the biggest challenges in the modern workplace. Lack of time can lead to excessive stress, which in turn leads to less effective work practices.

This workshop covers new techniques to help you improve your performance and reduce your stress by allowing you to manage your time more effectively.

This program explains effective time management techniques to help you understand how time-related stress reduces productivity, and provides practical strategies for reducing stress and its negative impact.

This course will benefit anyone with competing priorities or who works in deadline-driven or stressful environments.

Workplace Etiquette

We only get one chance to make a first impression, and while behavioural norms we learned as children are timeless, our repertoire of good manners never anticipated email, mobile phones, social networking – or any of the 21st century workplace’s indispensable tools.

This distinctive half-day workshop helps you create a favourable impression in today’s workplace by challenging you to think critically about how to put your best foot forward in any situation. Workplace etiquette covers new communications channels and tools that are now ubiquitous, as well as providing a refresher on some of the basics.

This workshop will benefit managers, customer-facing staff and anyone seeking competitive advantages that go hand-in-hand with confident and courteous presentation.

How to Effectively Enforce Safety Policies in the Workplace

Developing, implementing and maintaining effective safety management systems requires a significant investment of business resource.

Businesses rely on these systems to meet compliance requirements and make enforceable decisions, but unfortunately, overlaps between safety and employee performance management issues can occur. Even though an employee may fail to follow safety policies and procedures, businesses can find that their safety standards are not upheld when disciplinary actions are examined.

This workshop provides a complete picture of how the OSH and ER systems must work together to protect businesses from unfair treatment claims.

Safety Essentials for Small Business

When considering your obligations as a small business operator or employer, you need to be aware of the essential steps to effectively manage safety in your workplace.

This course will provide owners, managers and employees in small business organisations with the knowledge and practical advice to understand their legal requirements. It will cover practical tips for managing the various aspects of occupational safety and health management within a small business workplace.

This program is appropriate for small business managers, supervisors, and their employees.

Introduction to Termination of Employment for Small Business

Did you know that Small Businesses are no longer exempt from Unfair Dismissal Laws? Can you terminate an employee who doesn’t show up for work? Do you need to give three warnings before dismissing? Can a casual employee make an unfair dismissal claim?

The laws relating to termination have changed and the compensation paid to employees who are terminated unfairly can be significant.

This half-day program is aimed at all small business owners and managers and will help identify the risks associated with termination and the correct procedures to follow when terminating employees.

Managing Employee Social Media Use in the Workplace

Social media use by employees at work can be a productivity black hole, but online activities outside of work can be even more problematic for employers.

Disgruntled or thoughtless employees can damage a business reputation in a single inappropriate ‘tweet’, bully a co-worker on Facebook, or inadvertently release sensitive or confidential information and many employers struggle to manage their employees’ use of social media.

This workshop will help identify possible risks associated with employee social media use, offer strategies to appropriately manage these issues, and review the current case law and factors taken into account by Fair Work Australia.

Managing Sick Leave in the Workplace

Employers manage a range of issues relating to sick leave from legitimate long-term illnesses to the frustration of dealing with an employee who is always ‘sick’ on Mondays.

The Direct Health Solutions 2008 Australian survey reported unplanned absences from the workplace cost Australian business approximately $26 Billion per year in lost productivity.

It can be very difficult balancing the needs of the business with the rights of the employee while ensuring compliance with many legal requirements, but appropriate management can minimise these costs.

The session identifies underlying issues that lead to absenteeism, legal requirements and risks associated with managing sick or absent employees, and explains practical steps to improve attendance.

Workplace Relations Compliance for the HR Manager

HR Managers take on many key roles, often including responsibility for ensuring their organisation complies with workplace relations laws.

Compliance mitigates the risk of fines and payouts for compensation, and also lessens the likelihood of poor media attention and employee mistrust. Unfortunately, workplace relations laws are complicated and constantly change.

This program gives comprehensive consideration to key sections of the Fair Work Act 2009, along with strategies to assist in compliance. Participants work through real-life cases and employer undertakings involving underpayments and breaches of the Fair Work Act 2009.
