Apprenticeships

SelectionRecruitment can be a lengthy process which could result in the loss of working hours within your business.

Staff training and development can increase productivity, employee satisfaction and retention. With a work based apprenticeship, this will be combined within their current role and the individual will receive an accredited qualification at the end of the course.

If you require additional or new staff, we could support you through this process and alleviate the stress of it all.

Apprenticeship 16-18By signing a new apprentice into the business you can support a hungry individual who wants a future career within your business, working alongside experienced staff -

Apprenticeship 19+This will follow the same process as a 16-18 apprenticeship. They would still be working as an apprenticeship, for their first year, where they will then move onto the minimum wage

Internal DevelopmentYou may have identified a candidates potential within your business that would benefit from learning and developing their skills within your business. This individual could have recently taken on additional duties and responsibilities or have recently been promoted into the position from another role.

Apprenticeships - Continued

The Qualification and DeliveryDiplomas or StandardsThe Qualifications are going through a reform and it is expected that by 2020 all Apprenticeships will be on a Standard as opposed to the current diplomas. Your Summerhouse Training representative will be able to tell you whether you will be accessing a Standard or Diploma.

End Point AssessmentIf you are going to be on a standard the way that this is delivered is different. As well as assessing you throughout your time on the programme, the qualification will have an End Point Assessment (EPA) which is completed by an external party and may be completed away from the workplace and will consist of an Interview, exam and assessment.

Off the Job TrainingAn employer must provide the equivalent to a day a week (20%)* paid off the job training. This can include:

Teaching of Theory; e.g. online learning, role playing, lecturesPractical Training; shadowing, mentoring, industry visits or competitionsLearning support; time spent writing assignments, completing qualification activities or support visits

*This does not include time spent on Functional Skills.

The FundingAs from 1st May 2017, the way that Apprenticeships are funded changed. The Levy was introduced and this means that if you have an Apprentice an employer contribution is now required. If you have a £3 million or more wage bill this is automatically taken via your PAYE. Otherwise a 10% contribution is required. Please see the funding page for more information.

Summerhouse are also able to access other forms of funding including Learner Loans, and support for learners who are unemployed, furthest from employment or who do not already have a level 2 or level 3 qualification.

Horse Care - Apprenticeships

Course DescriptionThis qualification is for candidates entering the industry with good basic skills and knowledge, or following on from achieving a Level 1 qualification. As a work based learning course, you will receive hands work experience focusing on the principles and practices of horse care and management. The learner will focus on areas of interest such as yard work, competition horses, riding, breeding or coaching. These qualifications as well as gaining experience in in the industry, such as Riding Schools, Competition yards, Stud Farms, Liveries or Show Centers.

The Framework consists of Mandatory units, a Pathway and Optional units which you can choose depending on your job role and aspirations.

Course RequirementsYou will need to be confident in walk, trot and canter, preferably with and without stirrups.Some jumping experience is an advantage.You need basic stable management skills in mucking out, grooming and tacking up.Basic Math and Communication Skills (a GCSE 4 or above in Math and English is an advantage, but not a requirement, as we have specialist tutors available)

Course DurationThis course can be started at any time and will typically take 12-24 months to complete.


Functional Skills

Course DescriptionFunctional Skills Maths, English form part of the framework or standard of an Apprenticeship. You will complete an initial assessment to identify the level that you are currently working at and then a Diagnostic will be completed to identify the areas that you will need support. Once your assessor and you are happy that you have proven your competence exams will be sat.

If you have completed your GCSE’s recently or hold Key or Functional Skills you may be exempt from one or all of them.

If you are exempt at level 1, we will offer you the opportunity to work towards your Level 2 in that area.

Diploma in Nail Technology Studies*

Course DescriptionThe VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology Studies (QCF) is a technical level qualification that provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as a nail technician. This qualification is based on Habia National Occupational Standards (NOS). This qualification is recognised by the UK’s largest beauty therapy/nail services trade body/professional association, The Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) and also the UK’s second largest association representing beauty therapy/nail services employers; the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a nail technician.The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively as a nail technician including health and safety, client care and communication, applying and maintaining nail enhancements using either ultra-violet gel or liquid and powder, nail art using both manual and airbrush techniques, electric filing techniques, how to promote products and services and business and teamwork skills. All units in this qualification are mandatory.

Diploma in Make-up Artistry*

Course DescriptionThe VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Make-up Artistry (QCF) is a substantial vocational qualification that will prepare you for a career as a make-up artist. This qualification is designed for learners aged 19 years or over and will support you to gain employment as a make-up artist, as the units contained in this qualification cover all the skills and knowledge required for this role.This is a vocational qualification and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a make-up artist including mandatory units covering the following: applying make-up, instruction on make-up, fashion and photographic make-up, media make-up, camouflage make-up, airbrush make-up and promoting products and services. Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, client care and cosmetic products and equipment. You will also develop a range of technical skills enabling you to prepare the skin and apply a variety of make-up products using different techniques. You will also develop interpersonal skills, which will assist you to communicate effectively with clients.

Diploma in Beauty Therapy*Course DescriptionThis qualification has been specifically designed to help develop the knowledge & skills to prepare you for employment as a beauty therapist. You will have your Beauty Therapy skills assessed in a realistic working environment and will prepare learners to gather evidence in a realistic working environment or real working environment without the need for fee paying clients. This qualification offers all the required elements to work effectively including: providing body massage, face and body electrotherapy, health and safety and client care. You will also have the opportunity to develop your understanding and skills further in a number of units which include: massage with pre-blended oils, individual permanent lashes, self-tanning and micro dermabrasion. Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, client care and beauty therapy products and equipment. You will also develop a range of technical skills enabling you to prepare the skin and apply a variety of beauty therapy products and electrical equipment using different techniques and interpersonal skills that will assist you to communicate effectively with clients. All our tutors are fully qualified teachers with industry experience and all courses are certificated by VTCT (International awarding body in Beauty).

Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Lights (IPL)*Course DescriptionThe VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments is an advanced qualification that has been specifically designed for beauty therapists.

This qualification is based on beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is approved and supported by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA), the standard setting body for hair, beauty, nails and spa qualifications. The VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments is focused on reducing hair growth and photo rejuvenation of the skin using intense pulse light and laser treatments. This qualification requires you to develop skills to carry out IPL and laser treatments. This qualification allows you to gather evidence in a realistic working environment or real working environment without the need for fee paying clients.This Course is funded through Advanced Learning Loans – See Funding Information.

Care Certificate (Skills for Care)


Level 2 Diploma in Care (RQF)Course DescriptionThis qualification is designed for learners working in both the adult care and healthcare workforce in England. Assessing both knowledge and competence. The qualification content is appropriate for roles such as adult care workers, healthcare assistants/support workers and personal assistants.

Learners gaining this qualification will be able to understand and demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas; using communication and handling information, personal development, implementing person-centred approaches, equality and inclusion, health, safety and wellbeing, duty of care and safeguarding and protection.

Learners will also develop their knowledge and skills in a variety of other areas by selecting optional units that are suitable for their job role, development and aspirations.

Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care (RQF)Course DescriptionIt is designed for those learners working as leaders in adult care and is a specialist qualification for adult care. The qualification content is appropriate for roles such as lead adult care workers and lead personal assistants.

Learners gaining this qualification will undertake 9 mandatory units enabling them to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas; promoting communication and effective handling of information, promoting personal development, person-centred approaches, equality and inclusion, health, safety and wellbeing, responsibilities of a care worker, duty of care and promoting safeguarding and protection in care settings.

Learners will also develop their knowledge and skills in a variety of other areas by selecting optional units that are suitable for their job role, development and aspirations. If relevant to their role, learners may also choose from a selection of leadership units that can be undertaken as part of this qualification

Level 4 Diploma in Care (RQF)Course DescriptionIt is designed for those learners working in senior practice and/or lead practitioner roles in adult care settings such as residential care, domiciliary care or day services, typically with responsibility for assessing performance and quality of care delivery, providing coaching and mentoring to their colleagues.

Learners on this qualification will undertake 11 mandatory units enabling them to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas; leading communication, developing, maintaining and using records and reports, personal development, leading inclusive practice, health and safety, facilitating person-centred assessment and support planning to ensure positive outcomes and to support wellbeing, professional practice, working in partnership, understanding personalisation, safeguarding and protection in adult care settings.

Learners will also develop their knowledge and skills in a variety of other areas by selecting optional units that are suitable for their job role, development and aspirations.

Level 5 – Leadership and management , Operations/Departmental Manager

Course DescriptionThe qualification is designed to support delivery of the Operations/Departmental Manager apprenticeship and covers the knowledge and skills contained within this standard. The qualification will also support any learner currently employed in, or aspiring to a middle-management position.

The qualification provides learners with the knowledge and skills in leadership and management such as leading people, team performance, operational management, project management, finance and decision making.

Course RequirementsThere are no entry requirements to this course, however good Communication and maths skills are recommended.

Course DurationThis course can be started at any time and duration is 18 – 24 months


Meet the Team

A number of people will be involved in the support and delivery of the qualification:

Assessor During your meeting, we will be able to explain how the course will work and we'll work together to tailor the programme to your areas of expertise and to match the career path you have planned. There will be quite a lot of 'paperwork' to complete initially, but it's necessary to secure the government funding. Don't worry – we’ll try to make it as easy and enjoyable for you as possible.

From there, you will continue to have teaching and assessment visits which will take place every 4 to 6 weeks. The meetings will last approximately 2 hours and will include:

• Observing you whilst you work to support you • Feedback to improve your performance, • Holding discussions with you to support you in your performance and knowledge

development• Applying specific focus to your English and maths skills to support you to achieve

qualifications in these areas.

The content of these visits are built around your daily responsibilities and tasks. By utilising our teaching and assessing expertise, we are able to provide you with a bespoke course, personalised to your individual development needs.

You can expect regular programme reviews, ongoing achievement, embarking on new focus areas and planning your future goals. You don't have to wait until the end of the course to see results.

Internal Quality AssurerDuring your qualification, the Quality Assurer (QA) will ensure that the qualification is tailored to you, that the assessor is utilising holistic assessment opportunities and supporting you through the qualification. The QA will hold Standardisations to ensure that the assessors are kept up to date on changes in standards and practice and will also sample your portfolio throughout your learning journey. They will also complete observations of the Assessor delivering Teaching and Learning and will also deliver clarification and support for both you and your assessor.

Functional Skill TutorWill help you work towards and achieve the functional skill requirements alongside your Assessor. This is tailored to suit your learning style and need. You will complete Initial Assessments and Diagnostics to help us identify your areas for development and then the Functional Skills Tutor and your Assessor will work with you on these areas to get you exam ready.

Behind the sceneQuality Managers work behind the scenes to ensure that your training programme goes as smoothly as possible and they will also manage the funding, learning and achievement process. They are available to speak to should you have any concerns or queries with the programme or assessor. Our Administration staff will also be dealing with all of the paperwork and finance side.


Funding Information

ApprenticeshipsApprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study. As an apprentice you’ll:•work alongside experienced staff•gain job-specific skills•earn a wage and get holiday pay•get time for study related to your role (usually one day a week)

Apprenticeships take 1 to 5 years to complete depending on their level.

Who can applyYou can apply for an apprenticeship while you’re still at school. To start one, you’ll need to be:•16 or over by the end of the summer holidays•living in England•not in full-time education

Funding ApprenticeshipsPay the apprenticeship levy - If you’re an employer with a pay bill over £3 million each year, you must pay the apprenticeship levy from 6 April 2017. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pay-apprenticeship-levy

Changes for employers who don’t pay the levy - Support with apprenticeship costs.Non-levy paying employers will share the cost of training and assessing their apprentices with government - this is called ‘co-investment’.

The co-investment rate has changed for new apprenticeships starting on or after 1 April 2019. You will now pay 5% towards the cost of apprenticeship training. The government will pay the rest (95%) up to the funding band maximum.

All apprenticeships that started before 1 April 2019 will continue at the previous co-investment rate of 10%.

Advanced Loaner LoansYou can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the costs of a course. Loan eligibility does not depend on your income and there are no credit checks.You’ll only have to pay your loan back when both the following apply:• You’ve finished your course• You earn more than £25,725 a year

You may also be eligible for money from the Advanced Learner Loan Bursary Fund if you need help with some costs while studying, for example childcare, travel or trips related to your course.

Adult Education Budget ( AEB)For learners aged 19 and over there is the potential to fund different types of courses and levels.• Funding for learners to complete English and maths Functional Skills up to Level 2 for those aged 19

and over who have not achieved GCSE grade 4-9.• To support progression up to and including a full Level 2 for those aged 19-23. • For those aged 19-23 who have not got a first full Level 3. • For those who are 24+ and who have not got a level 2 qualification and are earning under £15,735.50

a year. • Skills provision for unemployed – getting adults back into education or employment.
