NOW is the time to begin pre- paring for the task of safely operating our vehicles in the adverse conditions that can come with winter driving. Here are 3 key things we can do that will help keep us safe. 1. Follow Distance The space that is easiest for us to control is the space in front of us. Because of the road conditions reducing our ability to stop and/or steer, it is important for us to increase our following distance from 6--8 seconds to a minimum of 8-10 sec- onds. 2. Reduce Speed For the same reason we need to increase our following distance, it is equally import- ant for us to reduce our speed by at least half. (Example: 50mph reduce to 25mph) 3. Expect others to put us at the most risk Be prepared for other drivers to not follow safe driving practices. By combining the practices of being prepared for the unknown with increasing our following distance and reducing our speed, we dramatically reduce the likelihood of being involved in a crash. The Driver Training team has developed a on- line course covering: - Pre-Driving Preparation - Effective Visual and Space Management - Safe Backing and Maneuvering - Risk Management and Dispatch Safety - Technician Performance Factors & much more!
