• As with any project, it is critical that the right skills sets are brought to Fieldbus projects.
• Experience has shown that training of all members o f the project team, engineers, maintenance, operations st aff, and SALES / SUPPORT personnel is critical to the project’s success.
• It often comes down to knowing the right questions to ask and/or the right ANSWERS to give.
• Customers are becoming much more astute at asking smarter questions . Can you provide the right answers ?
Questions & the right ANSWERS

Separate vs Overall Approach
CapEx savings are just a SMALL part of the total picture
Overall installation satisfaction is affected by how well the technology is implemented (OpEx)

Fieldbus = Change
 <1930’s – Direct connected devices 1940’s – Pneumatic signal transmission 1950’s – 10-50/4-20mA replacing 3-15psi 1970’s – Process computers appear (PLCs) 1980’s – DCS implemented 1990’s – first FF systems 2000’s – Fieldbus crosses “chasm” 2000+ – Vendors begin to struggle with learning how
to respond to customer Fieldbus requests
= Change Happens

Change = learning NEW & unlearning OLD
Industry reports indicate that ~ 50% of commissioning problems are due to poor installation practices (power/shielding/wiring/termination errors)

Summary / Conclusion
In an environment of rapidly changing
technologies, foundational skills become even
more critical.
 Servicing a customer’s instrumentation and
control needs requires a crafted plan .
Sales people can become even more valuable and
can help minimize design “workarounds”, but
only if they are adequately educated .
