• Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

The Duration of the training
• “A Child” Scripture uses…in a broad sense:– A newborn infant (1 Sam 4:21)
– 3-month-old Moses (Exo 2:2-3)
– Samuel before weaned (1 Sam 1:22)
– Ishmael as a preteen (Gen 21:12-20)
– Joseph at age 17 (Gen 37:2)
– A young man of marriageable age (Gen 34:19)
The Manner of the training
• “In” in keeping or cooperation w/something. “The way he should go” road or path. – According to the wisdom / counsel of godly parents.
– According to the child’s inherent personality traits.
The Results of the training
• “And when he is old he will not depart from it.” the root meaning is “hair on the chin.”– A worn out prodigal?
– A child upon reaching maturity, will not depart from his training (e.g. 2 John 1, 4).
Application: Prov. 22:6
• Pro 20:11-13 observe them w/diligence.– Be alert as to how they respond to life’s situations
– Train your heart in righteousness (2 Tim 3:14-15).
– Ask your Heavenly Father to make you aware of their unique qualities.
