Another year coming to a close and another opportunity to look back and ahead!

We’ve decided to devote this issue to “bests” and I hope you will find it interesting. Also, I hope it prompts you to look back over this past year and highlight your own “bests”. And, I hope your list includes plenty of camping experiences with us!

We compiled our “bests” from several places, including our Facebook fan feedback, our TT rally groups, and our preserve managers and recreation directors. And certainly, if you would like to chime in, please feel free to send us a message at:[email protected].

In reading through these stories I am especially touched by our preserves’ responses to our asking them to share a story that helps define “this is what it’s all about.” The camaraderie, sense of community and family certainly come across in these anecdotes. I’m glad to see that the stories encompass the range of our family, as well – from the 20+ years member to the newly-minted one.

Our members chose to spend private and personal moments with their extended Thousand Trails families. That really says something. A lot of the preserves’ stories refer to our unofficial motto “We are Family” and after reading all these stories, I don’t really think anyone can dispute that. We certainly are a family.

It’s also nice to see the highlights of the preserve projects and improvements. From upgraded pools, repaved roads and site revamps to brand new welcome centers, redecorated lodges, and activity center additions, the preserves have worked hard during 2012 to continue to make your experience at Thousand Trails all you expect it to be.

One thing I would like to highlight as a best of 2012 is our new TrailBlazer Network app. As we mentioned in our newsletter, several of our members are serving as beta testers and we are getting some good feedback. Our thoughts behind creating this application play into

the “we are family” concept. This app is a way to stay connected to your camping friends even if you’re not at a preserve. The communication and camaraderie can continue through this great app. Keeping in touch is what it’s all about. So if you haven’t downloaded it yet, please do so. It’s a lot of fun! To learn more about the app, check out Pages 12-13 in this issue.

As for looking ahead, we are gearing up for another great year of camping for 2013. Here’s hoping you look back fondly on your 2012 camping memories and are already planning for another round of “bests” in 2013!

Happy Holidays!

Thought Of the Month

Other things may change us, but we start and end with family.

Water HeatersAlthough there are a variety of water heaters available, most RV water heaters utilize dual energy sources: electricity and LP gas. When we’re connected to shore power, most of us choose to power our water heaters with electricity. But as a general rule, electric water heaters are greedy, power-hungry appliances, requiring 1000 to 1500 watts of electrical power. If you’re running an air conditioner, microwave oven, or other appliances, it’s usually a better idea to use LP gas to heat your water in order to reduce your RV’s overall electrical load.

How do you keep a water heater operating at peak efficiency? It’s very easy. An old-timer’s tip is to simply use your water heater as you need it. Since an RV water heater operating on electricity can be such an energy hog, travel veterans have learned how to do more with less. RV water heaters are usually just 6-10 gallons in size, so thrifty RVers have learned to improvise. Their solution? Simply use the heater on an as-needed basis. When you get up in the morning, turn it on. Enjoy your first cup of coffee as your water heats and by the time you’re ready to wash your breakfast dishes and take a shower, you’ll have plenty of hot water. Turn the water heater off to conserve electricity and you’ll probably find you’ve heated all you need for the rest of the day. If you’re footing the bill for the electricity use, you’ll be glad you did.

Heating elements in water heaters can, and do, corrode, mostly due to the hardness of the water you’ve introduced into your RV through your varied travels. This corrosive effect is a natural chemical reaction to the heat of the water in the tank, which causes the minerals contained in all water to adhere to the heating element. This is normal, but, after an extended period of time, can actually cause the water heater element to burn out.

This same chemical reaction can affect hot water thermostats. If your RV’s water seems to be getting hotter than usual, it’s usually due to this accumulation of mineral deposits. These deposits effectively insulate the thermostat from the water, causing the thermostat’s reading of the water temperature to be considerably lower than the actual water temperature. If you encounter this problem, have an RV service technician examine your water heater.

Water PumpsWhen turned on, your onboard water pump keeps pressure on all your water lines, drawing its water from your fresh water holding tank and sending it throughout your RV. This pump is controlled by a simple pressure switch; when the pressure in the water lines builds up, the pump cuts off. When you open a faucet, the pressure lowers and the pump comes on.

If the water pump is kicking on and off (short-cycling), you may have a water leak either through your faucets, the toilet, your showerhead, or possibly in a water line in the basement of your RV. Whether you see a leak or not, this is usually an indication of a problem in your plumbing lines or possibly with your water pump. Check it out immediately and if you identify a problem, take your RV to your favorite service center.

Drivetrain Maintenance All the stress and strain that’s put on your RV’s engine is directly transferred to the drivetrain of your RV (or tow vehicle). The drivetrain includes your transmission, driveline/shaft, and drive axle. All of these components should be maintained with the same enthusiasm you offer your engine.

Overheated automatic transmissions are often caused by simple factors: low transmission fluid, a transmission cooler (located in the grille) that is plugged with debris,

It’s amazing how just a few simple tips and tricks can make your RV travels easier and more enjoyable. Who would ever think that a few neglected fluids could cripple an RV or that substantial energy savings could be had with a flip of a switch? Read on and see what simple secrets you’ve been missing.

Watermelon Ribs (Based on a recipe from the Loveless Café, Nashville, TN)

Cooking Requirements:12-inch Dutch oven15 coals on lid, 8 coals below (in a ring) to start

Ingredients:2 racks of “St Louis” cut pork spareribs or 3 lbs. of pork country style ribs3-4 tablespoons good rub*1/2 cup brown sugar1 jar sweet and smoky-type BBQ sauce3 cups watermelon, cut into large cubes

Blend BBQ rub and brown sugar and rub ribs, making sure to cover all the surfaces evenly. Let sit and marinate for several hours (approximately 3-4 hours).

Pan sear the ribs in hot Dutch oven by putting 12 coals under the oven. Pull out ½ the ribs. Put in ½ the watermelon chunks. Put the other ½ of ribs into the oven; and then the other ½ of the watermelon chunks.

Cook the ribs in the Dutch oven for 2 ½ to 3 hours at slow temp; 300 maximum or use a loose ring of coals on the lid and a loose ring on the bottom (14-15 on top, 8 on bottom). Replenish the coals as necessary, every 45-50 minutes.

The ribs and watermelon will make plenty of liquid. The meat should be so tender that it will almost melt in your mouth! You can serve with BBQ sauce, but I didn’t find that necessary.

Rub(Here is a basic recipe from award-winning cookbook author and chef Steve Raichlen)

Ingredients:Dark brown sugar, packed1/4 cup paprika3 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper1 tablespoon garlic powder1 tablespoon dried onion flakes1/2 to 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper1/2 teaspoon celery seeds

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and stir or whisk to mix. Transfer to a jar, cover, and store away from heat and light. The rub will keep for several months.

We asked our staff and contributing writers to pick a favorite from this year’s

Camper’s Kitchen recipes. Here’s what heads their camping menus!

When Maya Angelou writes, people read. When Maya Angelou speaks, people listen. When Maya Angelou travels America,

people see her on the road in her beloved 45-foot Prevost Mirage XL with double slide-outs. Just look for a winged dove on the rear window.

Born in 1928 and famed for the bestseller, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the reading of her poem “On the Pulse of a Morning” at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993, and so much more, Dr. Angelou’s civil rights work, writing, teaching, and speaking have kept her on the road for much of her life.

Once a frequent flier with millions of miles with Delta and USAirways, Angelou actually now loves travelling to almost every engagement in North America in her home away from home.

“Whenever I travel at all, I use my bus,” she says of her home on wheels, which was customized for her by Four Seasons RV in Lebanon, Tennessee—one of several companies with a long list of road warrior celebrity clients.

“For me, the familiarity of the bus keeps me from feeling that I’m away from home,” she told us from her long-time home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she is the Z. Smith Reynolds

WHETHER YOU SPEND LIFE ON THE ROAD FOR PLEASURE OR WORK, IT’S NICE TO HAVE THE COMFORTS OF HOME AS YOU TRAVEL THE HIGHWAYS AND BYWAYS. TRAILBLAZER CHECKS IN WITH FOLKS WHO SPEND A FAIR AMOUNT OF TIME ON THE ROAD TO SEE JUST WHAT MAKES THEIR HOME AWAY FROM HOME. THIS MONTH, WE CHATTED WITH RENAISSANCE WOMAN

MAYA ANGELOU

Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University (a lifetime appointment). Dr. Angelou’s illustrious life has included roles as a single mother, best-selling author, actress and playwright, producer and director, civil rights activist, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded to her by President Barack Obama in 2011.

Her still-busy travel schedule means she likes homey touches in her bus.

“I have a couple of African masks which I’ve put up and a carving of a bird which is on the back windshield which was carved for me by an artist who thought of my book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” she says, when naming some of the things that make it feel like home. Upon reflection, she adds the refrigerator, the stove, the bathroom, and her king-size bed to her home-like list.

When asked about her favorite destinations, Dr. Angelou says, “There’s no city—no destination—in which I feel strange. I’m an American. I belong where my bus takes me. Everywhere I stop, I feel comfortable. I like taking the scenic routes when I have that much time.”

Along with her obvious love affair with North Carolina, Dr. Angelou still enjoys heading west. “I love San Francisco and the Bay Area,” she says. “I grew up there from the time I was 13.” She also enjoys Los Angeles and San Diego, ending her wanderlust list by saying, “Everywhere!”

MORE ON MAYA:• Dr. Angelou worked with both

Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther Kingin the civil rights movement.

• Published in 1970, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was the first volume of Dr. Angelou’s extraordinary autobiography, which also includes four additional books.

• The feature film, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” starred Diahann Caroll, Esther Rolle, and Ruby Dee.

• Dr. Angelou has authored two cookbooks: Great Food, All Day Long and Hallelujah: The Welcome Table.

• Dr. Angelou has receivedmore than 70 honorary degrees.

• There’s a winged dove on the rear window of Dr. Angelou’s bus, as well as one on

the inside of her front door.

“THERE IS

NO CITY - NO

DESTINATION - IN WHICH

I FEEL STRANGE. I’M AN

AMERICAN.

I BELONG WHERE

MY BUS TAKES ME”...

Dr. Angelou plays solitaire and hearts when travelling and also enjoys using her laptop, but she doesn’t compose poems or pursue other writing when on the bus. “I never tried to write,” she says. “I might edit a little bit on something I’ve already written.”

Along with many other bestsellers, Dr. Angelou has prepared two cookbooks and obviously enjoys the kitchen and dining facilities onboard. But she also loves Bojangles chicken from back home!

“I’m a Bojangles woman myself,” she reveals with a sly smile. “Whenever we leave North Carolina, we pick up Bojangles and put it in the freezer. When we are ready, we thaw it and put it in the convection oven. And, then we have Bojangles in Wichita, Kansas!” n

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 | TRAILBLAZER 34

Alaska. One of the last wild frontiers in North America. Its rustic, frontier-flavored streets with

shops and saloons, is a vacation that will take you back to the Gold Rush era. And the glistening, glorious glaciers – a wall of glowing blue ice hundreds of feet tall, creaking and crashing as it calves a building-size iceberg into the water below – this will be a vacation you’ll never forget.

Join Preferred Access as we set sail to Alaska aboard the Sapphire Princess on August 24, 2013. Sailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska, this is their most popular itinerary bringing you Alaska’s most sought-after attraction – glaciers! Aptly named, the Voyage of the Glaciers visits the epic tidewater glaciers of pristine Glacier Bay National Park, as well as those at College Fjord. You’ll also enjoy calls in frontier ports along the Inside Passage, including Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. Rates starts at $929 per person, plus, Preferred Access members receive shipboard credit starting at $50 per cabin, a bottle of wine and a special travel gift.

Voted “The Best Cruise Line in Alaska” by Travel Weekly, as The Consummate Host,® Princess makes everything easy on you. Their service is warm, welcoming, thoughtful, gracious and genuine. You will be made to feel like a cherished guest as they attend to your every need. Each of their ships is a relaxed, rejuvenating retreat at sea where you can reconnect with your life while enjoying the spectacular variety of dining, activities, entertainment and enrichment.

In addition, when you sail with Princess Cruises, you’re sailing with destination experts so you’re visiting places you’ve always wanted to see while guided by crew that have a true passion for the places they sail. In addition to the above sailing, Preferred Access offers over 200 select sailings each year that give members additional amenities when they book their cruise through our office. Amenities range from a bottle of wine, to shipboard credit, to exclusive shore excursions on select sailings.

Don’t delay – call Preferred Access at (800) 281-4977 and speak to one of our cruise agents to book your cruise today. Space is limited and generally sells out well in advance.

Highlighting RPI Delights

Over the past several years, RPI has been featured every month in TrailBlazer,

introducing great destinations for the RV enthusiast.

These resorts – the best of the best – are found throughout the U.S. and up into Canada. From the Florida Keys to the Pacific Northwest, from ocean beaches to the mountains and valleys of this beautiful land we call home.

Along the way, we have detailed the programs and benefits – the great value and family fun – that make RPI membership the most valuable in the industry.

Our resorts are the finest independently owned membership RV parks, and they provide wonderful opportunities to make lasting memories for RPI members.

This is the “Best Of” issue of TrailBlazer. In that spirit, here is a fanciful list of some of the special RPI resorts we have visited in past issues.

Best National Monument – Mt. Rushmore, Rapid City, SD. The monument is majestic, and nearby Hart Ranch is magnificent.

Best Fresh Water – For winter and summer fun in the sun, the Colorado River – Parker Strip – and Emerald Cove Resort – are impossible to beat.

Best Golf – Up in Randle, WA, almost on Mt. Rainier, Maple Grove RV & Golf Resort is a duffer’s delight.

Best Casinos – Hands down (with that hand being a full house!), it’s Laughlin, NV, and just over the bridge in Bullhead City you’ll find the perfect home base of Ridgeview Resort.

Best Ocean Beach for Kids – Kids (of all ages, actually) enjoy the beach and kites. Those two pastimes are combined with the longest white sand beach and best kite flying in America on the Long Beach peninsula in Washington. There are three great RPI resorts to choose from – Eagle’s Nest, Pacific Holiday and NACO Long Beach.

Best Pizza – Canyon Creek near Winters, CA, built a patio area for their new wood-fired pizza oven. Kids love the pepperoni and sausage, but the signature artisan vegetarian with artichoke, fresh tomato and onion is a gourmet treat. Especially with a glass of local wine.

Best Fishing – Earlier this year, we featured a sweet young lady and her great big catch on the Kenai River in Soldotna, AK. What could be better than packing a 60-plus-pound King salmon when you’re a youngster? Or at any age, for that matter? Proves that Edgewater Lodge is the best place to cast your line.

Just a brief sampling - and there will be more RPI highlights in issues to come. But now it’s your turn. Go to our Facebook page and post your thoughts on your favorite all-around RPI resort.

Crescent Bar, WA chose to sum up the experience

with a poem:

THOUSAND TRAILS CAMPINGThey come from miles around,

From big and small towns. In RVs, trailers and tents,

To enjoy our camping experience.

They bring jet skis, rafts, canoes and boats,To do the things they love the most.

They come with family and friends,Or they meet others and friendships begin.

They play games, swim till day’s end,Eat, laugh, sleep and do it all again.

They all regret when it’s time to go,They do their packing real slow.

Then one by one they wave goodbye. They said they had a great time.

They say they will be back without fail,For we love Thousand Trails.

Chehalis, WA There is not any “one” camper story that stands out. I just keep thinking of all the familiar faces that keep coming back, and watching the kids growing up. One sweet little girl, named Stephanie, comes back for the crafts every year…she loves them! Stephanie and her family like to do jigsaw puzzles and they often join in on our ice cream socials. Then there is Jaydean, who loves the face painting. She’s been coming back every year with her Grandpa and Grandma and she knows us all by name. There’s Marcus (his family has their favorite campsite in “C” section) who outgrew the “kid” stuff long ago but always pops in when

he’s here to say hi and see if he can help with something. Then there’s Lauren and Allison, two little girls who first showed up with their baby dolls for crafts and face painting have moved on to lounging by the pool and giggling about young girl things. One of our Annuals is a family with four little ones! Mom Ann, and kids, Anna, Tori, James and little “Bethy” do it all! They are very respectful, well-mannered children who call us “Miss Tracy” or “Mr. Dennis”. We don’t often get to see Dad because he is busy serving our country and we thank him for his service. Knowing these kids and their families look forward to returning every year for “the little things” …this is why we do what we do!

Idyllwild, CA A woman came into the store with her kids in tow and asked “Is this where we sign up for the honeywagon ride?”

La Conner, WA We had a gentleman who came from Florida in August of

2011 and loved the resort and staff so much that he stayed until June 2012. He was a delightful man, healing from the loss of his wife and traveling with his little dog. His small gestures of kindness such as Oreo cookies for the staff, boxes of potatoes to share and just his positive, friendly interactions touched all of us.

It’s these members, who return time after time, that make it “what it’s all about!”

Lake Conroe, TX Our most heartwarming stories revolve around how everyone here is

always willing to help each other out. Here are two examples. Recently, a travel camper in our extended stay area caught fire. Everyone pitched in together and helped out by removing things from around the camper before it all when up in flames. The owners of the camper were out of town when it caught fire so everyone did what they could to help out. Just the other night a mom that stays in one our annual sites with her four kids got sick at our Activity Center. An ambulance was called but she was worried about who would take care of the kids while she was being treated as she has no family in the area and her husband was at work offshore. Members pitched in to help with the kids while she was getting medical treatment. Lake Conroe is like one big family - we are all always willing to help each other out.

We asked our preserves to take a look back over the past year

and try to identify that one moment that made them realize “this is what it’s all about”. Here’s what they had to share:

Lake Minden, CA The most positive guest interaction experienced at Lake Minden in the year 2012 could in no way be narrowed down to just one guest, or even to one family. The most memorable, and yes,

heartwarming, experience involved closer to 1,500 guests, families and friends.

On July 3, Lake Minden partnered with the East Nicolaus and Pleasant Grove Firefighters Associations to host a community wide Independence Day Celebration. The outcome far exceeded our wildest expectations.

When we first came together and started planning for this event, we had big ideas, high hopes and a limited time to prepare. Being that we are, by nature, a mobile community, we also had no idea as to how many members might be available to help out with the many activities we had planned. Our list of activities for this 11-hour event kept growing and growing and included a kiddy carnival, jump house, bungee run, live entertainment, music, a craft fair, hayrides, information booths, paddleboat and kayak races, karaoke, water play, mini golf, a fishing derby, a barn dance, lots and lots of food and a whole lot of fireworks. In the midst of all this activity, the park had to be maintained just as it would on any other day. Lodges and bathrooms would have to be kept clean and well-stocked, cars directed to appropriate parking areas, trash emptied, first aid station manned and problems dealt with in a timely manner.

Near the end of June, our member volunteer list remained painfully short and we were unclear as to the number of people who would attend from the surrounding communities. Would it be 50, 100 or maybe even 500? We really didn’t know. Then one by one the volunteers came with only one question, “What can we do to help?” At last we were ready. At 12 p.m. we opened the gates to the community and waited. It didn’t take long for families to start trickling in. We started out slow, but realized many people probably had to work in the morning as both the 3rd and 4th were weekdays. As the day wore on the community poured into Lake Minden.

Both staff and volunteers reported that the most common comments from visitors were about the beauty and convenient location of the park, the friendliness of members and the warmth and helpfulness of the staff and volunteers. We lost count of the times we heard statements like, “We didn’t know you were here”, “We’ve always meant to come by”, or “I used to come here when I was a kid.”

By the end of the day what we were hearing the most was, “Can you do this again next year?” Over 1,400 people came together that day to celebrate this wonderful country we live in. Yes it was most definitely, a heartwarming experience.

Long Beach, WA When hopping into my car at the end of a day’s work, I saw a small tan dog running through a few sites. I hopped out expecting that someone may need a reminder of the leash rule but there was no

owner in sight. Being an animal lover I spent the next hour chasing this little dog around the park trying to catch it and get it back to its family. I thought it looked like the dog I saw with a family in a site at the west end of the park. I stopped by their site but no one was home. Fellow members parked by the site came out and let me know they had seen the dog nudge the window on the RV open and jump/fall out. I ended up enlisting the help of a kid on his bike and we continued to follow the dog. When we would lose sight of him other campers would point us in the right direction. Eventually with the kid helping me keep tabs on the dog’s location we managed to catch him. I got the dog on one of my leashes and started back to the site on the west end of the park hoping his family would be back. Right as the dog and I were walking to the site a car pulls up and the family pours out a bit confused as to why I have their dog. After explaining what transpired the family, especially the kids, were very thankful to have their pet back. As I was explaining what happened, my helper on the bike cruised by and the dog’s owners were able to thank him for all his help as well. It was great to have campers team up in helping return a scared lost pet to his happy family!

Medina Lake, TX Our Thousand Trails motto “We are Family” brings to mind two fabulous examples of that in our members, Harold and Juanita Bunn, who have been members

of thousand Trails for over 20 years. They are family to all of us here at Medina Lake. They join us every weekend and no one walks through the Activity Center door without feeling at home thanks to Harold and Juanita. They welcome members as though they have known them for years even though this may their first visit to Medina Lake.

On June 9, 2012, Harold and Juanita chose to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary here where they renewed their vows surrounded by family, friends and staff. It turned out to be a spectacular event with loved ones attending, whether they were related or not. Jimmy at Top of the Trail Café catered the event because they so love his food.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 | TRAILBLAZER 38

Harold and Juanita have made such an impact on our lives with their warm hearts and loving souls. Medina Lake would not be the same without them. Not only have they made the staff feel like family, they have also made members, old and new, feel the same way. Harold and Juanita are “what it’s all

about!”

Pacific City, OR The most memorable family we had here this summer was Lucy’s family during our Pirates/Survivors Weekend. We had a lot of families here for that event, but Lucy’s family consisted of aunts, uncles, cousins, her parents

and siblings and both sets of grandparents.

The event is designed as team challenge events so we started by having each team create their own tribal headdresses. All of the children were excited and helping one another create their headdresses. The second challenge was to create a tribal flag. One team member held the paper behind their back while the other teammates verbally told them how to tear tape and glue paper together to make the individual team flag. It was during this event that I heard someone keep saying “this is the most fun I have ever had.”

Shortly afterward a grandfather came up to me and my co-worker and said “Thank you so much for this amazing activity.” He went on to tell us that his granddaughter, Lucy, had spent most of her young life in the hospital and had been given three months to live, explaining to us that Lucy, now aged 9, had a rare condition that would require a major organ transplant, including a heart transplant. He then went back to taking pictures of his family as they participated in the event and played with Lucy.

The next challenge took us to the sand area. Lucy’s dad carried her because she tires easily. Our next challenge was a tribal rock collection. Each team had five minutes to collect, big, shiny rocks. Lucy had a huge smile on her face as she told her aunts and uncles which rocks to pick. These were pretty big rocks and as she watched her father and uncles pick them up, she smiled even bigger. Over and over, she kept saying “this is the most fun I’ve ever had.”

Our next challenge was the shelter challenge and each team had 10 minutes to create a waterproof shelter out of one garbage bag and some bailing ties. At the end of the challenge, Lucy’s team placed her in the middle of the shelter, which was under a picnic table while her parents and uncles took the outside position. As the water was splashed, their shelter held up and was indeed waterproof. As the water splashed their shelter, you could hear Lucy giggling and laughing.

The next challenge was the first aid challenge and each team was given some sticks and bailing rope to see what they could come up with in five minutes. Lucy’s team decided that they would splint Lucy’s “broken leg.” Again, Lucy said over and over that this was the most fun she’d ever had.

Our last challenge involved an apple suspended from a string. Lucy held her hands together behind her back and tried biting the apple, smiling, giggling and being encouraged by her whole family. At the end of this two-hour event, Lucy’s team had won the Survivor Challenge and each team member came up to receive their “medals”.

I was happy and honored to witness how strong and amazing this child was and know that she will live on in the hearts of everyone she met that weekend. Each and every adult member of this family spoke to every employee they encountered during the weekend to thank us for providing these memories for the family to experience before Lucy passes on. They were tears of joy shared from all of us who encountered Lucy and her family.

Palm Springs, CAThousand Trails’ motto “We Are Family” is so true and it does make you think “this is what it’s all about”. In January 2012 we had a motorhome fire here at Palm Springs. It was in the middle of the night and our campers literally got

out with the clothes on their backs and their dog. The next morning a group of members got together to help their fellow campers. Within a day the membership jumped into action – most members donated money, and some members went grocery shopping. During the next week over $1,000 had been donated to the couple that lost their home.

We are one BIG family and this just proves how BIG we are!

Pine Country, IL I signed a new annual this year and shortly after they got settled in, I drove by and checked to see how they were enjoying their stay and how they loved the preserve. The gentleman would say “We’re living the dream” and “This is just great!” From that point on, every time we chatted, he would always say “This is just great. I am so happy we did this.” This is a camper who truly

loves his preserve and his lifestyle.

Peace River, FL When Tropical Storm Debby (TS Debby) came through southwest Florida, the rain and thunder pummeled us for days.

There was one extended family who had booked a couple of cabins for the weekend. This group had the indomitable spirit of fun in them. I guess they decided that this was their vacation and their time to spend together and decided despite the weather, to make the most of it. The adults showed the kids how to have fun in the rain and the mud. When there were breaks in the storm, we were able to

Pacific City

open the pool for something for everyone to do. Before this group left, they stopped in to tell us that they had gathered before at the theme hotels in the area but this trip to Peace River had been their favorite.

South Jetty, OR We were very proud to have the reunion for the servicemen who served on the USS Kishwaukee (AOG-9) which was a Patapsco-class gasoline tanker. The ship was re-commissioned on September 1, 1966. From January into April 1967, the gasoline tanker supplied fuel for

naval aircraft for strikes against Communist targets during the Vietnam crisis. The reunion was for the veterans who served during this period including their Commanding Officer Gene Yarber. They were so gracious and appreciative for what the employees at South Jetty did to make their reunion special. We were personally thanked by the Commanding Officer to whom we expressed our true appreciation for their service to our country.

Turtle Beach, CA A new member, who purchased a Zone Park Pass in July 2012 has been enjoying camping at Turtle Beach. This member grew up camping in the Thousand Trails network and has great memories of our parks. Because of our great deal on the Zone Park Pass, he now has his own membership and has begun camping again. He has small children of his own now and is excited to pass on the Thousand Trails camping experience! He’s just like a kid when he arrives to check in! It’s great to see another generation of campers!

WildernessLakes, CA We got a call from a member who had just been in an accident just a mile from the property. The

member’s motorhome had been severely damaged from a collision with someone who had run a red light. The husband was taken to the hospital for observation but the wife and three dogs where left standing on the corner with the sheriff. The wife called the park for assistance and staff went down and picked them up and brought them back to the resort. We were able to put them in to one of our rental accommodations that could handle the three dogs. It took the insurance company and the RV repair shop over five months to return their motorhome home to them. The folks became well known at the park for their fondness of wildlife. They took care of injured geese, rescued an abandoned dog which had pups, found homes for the puppies and adopted the dog. All this time, these folks always seemed to be in a positive frame of mind and made the best of what they had during this difficult time.

We asked our Facebook fans to recall their best trip of 2012. Here’s what they

had to say...

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 | TRAILBLAZER 4047

Chesapeake Bay “The best enhancement this year is the new pier, which replaces the old one that had been battered by many storms over the years. The last straw was 2011’s Hurricane Irene, which damaged it badly. The new pier has the same footprint, but it’s higher to keep storm waters from submerging it so often, and it is better designed and constructed to withstand the inevitable storm surges.”

Crescent Bar “The installation of our automated sprinklers that allow us to water at night. Now our watering does not disturb member activities.”

Bay Landing

Every month TrailBlazer includes a section called

News and Notes which highlights upgrades and updates that have either been completed over the past month or are in the works and soon to be completed. We asked our preserves to look back on those projects and pick just one that stands out as the highlight of 2012. Here’s what they said:

Bay Landing “We have 5 new 50-amp sites hooked up in Section 1 and they are ready to go!”

Pacific City

Lake and Shore “Our new dock”

Harbor View “We have our new mini-golf course installed.”

Hidden Cove “WiFI and the new pool shade roof!”

Idyllwild “Too numerous to list but here goes – new electrical sites, playground, dog run, horse corrals, upholstery and paint!”

Pacific City “Our major addition was our Welcome Center and new entrance to the resort. Our Welcome Center now has the ranger/registration, manager, administrator/revenue supervisor and CampHost employees all in one location. This has made us more efficient with check ins and handling additional services.”

La Conner “Our beach cabins were upgraded this past spring and now have new stoves, refrigerators, beds, euro couches, colorful curtains and 32-inch flat screen TVs.”

Lake Conroe “Our repaved roads!”

Long Beach “We have remodeled the existing tent area to include a parking space and fire pits as well as creating a dozen new tent sites.”

Pine Country “New tile in one of the bathhouses and major electrical upgrades throughout the park.”

Turtle Beach “Upgrades to the dump station, with larger concrete pad, new access and a fresh coat of paint, plus entry road repaving.”

it is juststunning...

❝❞

Peace River “Our pool and spa upgrade stand out as the best of our 2012 improvements.”

Wilderness Lakes “Our maintenance staff rebuilt the deck to the sales office, adult lodge and operations office. The old deck was a long wooden deck that was about 12 feet wide and about 80 feet long and was built in the early 80s. The new deck was converted into two smaller decks, both with handicap ramps and railings. It looks great, will be easier to maintain and is much safer for all.”

South Jetty “The new roof on our Activity Center completed this summer. It is just stunning with the picturesque pines overlooking it.”

or by attempting to pull too much weight. Likewise, the solutions to these problems are equally simple. Keep your transmission fluid at the proper level (and diligently watch for leaks). Be sure to clean the transmission cooler when you clean your radiator. And, most importantly, NEVER exceed your manufacturer’s GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating).

Driveline universal joints must always be kept lubricated. Have your service technician regularly examine these for wear. Don’t overlook the differential gear’s oil level, because this tiny bit of neglect can cause some serious damage, resulting in burned-out axle bearings and unnecessary wear on the gears. Generally speaking, this is the type of maintenance work you’ll want to leave to your trusted RV Service Center.

No matter which direction you point your RV, you always know you’re in for a great adventure. Keep your eyes on the horizon and blaze a trail; happy travels! ■

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured board (or waxed paper), gather and knead very briefly just until it comes together. Take care not to work too much extra flour into it. Divide the dough in half. Form each half into a 1/2-inch thick circle. Place it into a lightly greased 10-inch Dutch oven. Cut into six triangles. Brush tops with the egg white mixture and sprinkle generously with the sugar. This will create shine and make the tops brown nicely.Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly and serve warm.

Allow me to describe how receiver hitches cause sway by putting on my engineering hat, which is the one I wear at my day job. Receiver-related trailer sway starts with the play in the ball mount. Imagine placing one end of a yardstick against a solid vertical surface such as a table leg, holding that end securely, then pushing against and releasing the free end. The displacement (called amplitude) of the free end is much greater than at the fixed end, where there is little to no displacement at all. By translating this analogy to a tow vehicle and trailer, we can imagine the fixed end as the ball mount, and the end of the trailer tongue as the free end. With the yardstick, an external force (a human) was required to start the yardstick moving, or oscillating. With the vehicle combination, the oscillation is started, or excited, by the movement of the ball mount in the receiver due to vehicle motion. This movement generally results in uncontrolled and irregular oscillation of the ball mount, which is translated through the ball and along the trailer tongue. By the time it reaches the trailer chassis it is greatly amplified. Additionally, it propagates through the various frame and chassis members. These elements are of different sizes and lengths, which results in different amplitudes and frequencies throughout the trailer. Radio waves work the same way as they travel through different mediums.

The overall magnification in amplitude along the trailer tongue and frame, plus the addition of other oscillations at different frequencies wreaks havoc on the trailer as it is moving down the road and the result is trailer sway. To make matters worse, ball mounts are made with many different drop heights. The lower the drop in the ball mount, the worse the

If you tow a vehicle or trailer with a motorhome, truck, van, or car, you are most likely familiar with receiver style hitches. These devices incorporate

a vehicle-mounted receiver and a ball mount that slides into the receiver when in use. Besides being the only hitch style available from Class I through Class V, they have the obvious advantage of being removable. This prevents the ball mount from injuring a person or damaging an object when not in use.

This is obviously not new information to any of the many drivers who have such a hitch setup on their vehicles. I tow my Prius on a tow dolly behind my diesel RV and use a locking receiver pin to secure my receiver to my coach. I also lock my dolly to the hitch ball. With the dolly configuration, I don’t require a weight distribution hitch or an anti-sway system, but many readers do utilize one or both of these devices, which makes connecting a trailer so equipped a bit of a chore.

Weight distribution systems were developed to do just that; distribute the trailer weight more evenly between the trailer tongue and towing vehicle. Anti-sway bars help prevent the trailer from wandering left and right due to high winds, passing vehicles, handling problems, and other unexpected variables. Although these towing related problems have been solved, there remains another issue with receiver style hitches that remained unaddressed until now.

Many readers may not realize that trailer sway is not just affected by winds, passing vehicles, and trailer variables such as tires and loading. Receiver style hitches themselves can actually contribute fairly significantly to trailer sway. I’m sure you’ve noticed how much play there tends to be in the ball mount whenever you slide it into the receiver, and this is likely to get worse the more the system gets used. The rattle that often accompanies this condition is often enough to drive one crazy, but trailer sway is the real unwanted, and generally unrecognized, side effect.

In a previous article for this magazine I wrote about Roadmaster and the wonderful products they manufacture. That piece was about the Invisibrake, and this one is about another cutting edge product by Roadmaster, the Quiet Hitch! It is a deceptively simple device that virtually eliminates receiver-related sway by removing all play in the system.

WHAT’S THE HITCH?

... and more on the WiFi that so many parks offer. It seems the further away we are from the park office or clubhouse the weaker the signal becomes. Nothing is as frustrating as being dropped from the Internet at a critical point. We have looked tirelessly for a solution. What do you use as you are also a full-timer?

Brandon and Kylee JonesFall City, WA

Excellent question! It seems that more and more people rely on WiFi these days for both business and pleasure. It is convenient to be able to log on from the comfort of your RV rather than trekking to the clubhouse for an ample connection. As you well know, there are many systems to choose from. Obviously the high-powered models with directional antennas offer the most gain. However, they are expensive and most folks do not feel comfortable climbing onto the roof of their RV to properly aim the antenna towards the clubhouse for maximum signal. We use an Alfa- model AWUSO36NHR booster- they run about $40 from Data Alliance. The Alfa comes standard with a short, omni-directional antenna and is designed for use inside your coach. This unit is limited on the amount of gain it pulls in, so I suggest getting a kit that allows for a bit more draw. I purchased Kit#2 -also from Data Alliance that runs around $30 and includes a waterproof enclosure, a 9db gain antenna with a 5-meter USB cable. The unit can then be placed inside the box and set up on the roof, or, on top of a slide out and the USB cable run through the window or door that is connected directly to your laptop for better connectivity to WiFi. Best of luck in your full-time adventures-- I know we would not want to be experiencing life in any other way!

BILL, AS FULL-TIME RVers, WE DEPEND MORE .. .... here as well as your tech articles in other magazines. This

is a simple question that relates to my simple pull trailer RV that I enjoy using for many nearby outings in the spring and fall.

I have a 1994 Starcraft Tent Trailer that has a number of small tears in the canvas. To keep the buzzing critters out, I have just used duct tape and/or clear silicone for some of the small wear and tear challenges in the past but now I have a rather long scratch that is wearing thin right before my eyes. I thought it would be best to ask your advice on a longer-term solution. What about a patch kit? I suppose I could replace the entire tent section, too, before it begins to look like a patchwork quilt?! Thanks in Advance,Barbara PikeGrove, OK

Barbara,

We are happy to help! The Starcraft canvas is expensive, especially with the cost of shipping, but a viable option although not necessary at this point. The 60 mph duct tape is temporary at best but if you plan to patch that area, the adhesive from the tape may create a problem when applying a permanent patch. That being said, desperate times call for desperate measures and my wife would use bubble gum if it meant keeping the skitters at bay! You should be able to find a canvas patch kit with glue at a sporting goods or outdoor outfitter type store. Keep these tips in mind when you are getting started on the repairs; trim the rough edges with scissors until they are smooth and straight, cut your patch so that it will overlap at least two inches all around, and most of all, be sure you patch both the outside and the inside to create a better bond. If the outside patch were to ever fall off, you will still have in place a weatherproof canvas! Safe travels!

... 1988 Southwind motorhome. 1. The shower faucet is leaking and I have no access for repairs because the faucet is in the outside wall. I have been told I need to cut a hole in the wall, as the manufacturer did not make a way to access in case of a problem. Suggestions?2. What brand of recoating product do you suggest I use for the fiberglass roof?3. My ceiling is sagging due to the fact that the foam backing is deteriorating. I am thinking of installing some sort of thin panel to support it- what kind of adhesive do I need? Something that would be weather resistant would be good. Thank you for your help and suggestions. I appreciate it. Dan GalindezSanta Nella, CA

Dan,

Good for you in attempting to repair your older unit and I hope my suggestions help you along the way. 1. Rather than cutting a hole in the outside wall of the motorhome, I think it would be best to remove the shower stall wall to gain access to the back of the faucet/shower diverter. It may be a little more work, but it will look better in the long run. Once you have the shower stall wall removed, make the repair and cut an access panel directly below the shower diverter for future repairs. If it’s too difficult to remove the shower wall, you could cut a hole from the outside and install a custom-sized baggage door that would match your other exterior doors. There is a company in Hollister, CA called All Rite Aluminum that will make a custom door for you with a Fleetwood frame—they may be able to match the color for you as well. 2. Dicor is the product I recommend you use for your fiberglass roof coating/repairs. Dicor makes a fiberglass roof coating system. Part # RP-FCP-1, that is the clean and prep solution. Usually two coats are required and one gallon will cover approximately 350 square feet. Measure your roof to determine how much product you will need. Excellence in your roof prep will be the key to making the roof coating stay put. Dicor also makes a self-leveling sealant if you need to caulk around your vents, antennas and/or moldings. 3. The most simple and cost efficient way to repair the sagging foam and vinyl is to remove it entirely. After removal, you will need to sand away the remaining foam that is adhered to the paneling. With all the foam removed,

... served us well for many years. Recently I was backing in to the space next to my house where I store it (my wife was out with the girls at a Bingo Tournament) and I was certain I could put the rig away without any eyes on the ground behind me. Mistake. BIG mistake. I never even looked at the corner of the house but it sure reminded me it was there as I ran right into it and crunched the ladder on the rear of the motorhome. The rain gutter took a small hit, but my ladder really looks like a pretzel. Worse off, the wife didn’t win at Bingo so we are concerned about the cost of what must be replaced. Please help, as I will never hear the end of this.

Ashamed in Arkansas

Mr. Ashamed,

OUCH. It sounds like you still have a good, sporting sense of humor if nothing else. The OEM replacement ladder is probably not available for this old of motorhome so you will need to purchase a universal motorhome ladder. I suggest the “Top Line” Ladder as they have always been high quality. Using a hacksaw, screwdrivers and a drill you should be able to cut and match the shape of your old pretzel, I mean ladder. Lol. Be sure you measure twice and cut once while shaping the new ladder. Once you are certain there is a good fit, use a high quality sealer at all of the mounting points. Thanks for your inquiry, and your humor.

prime and paint with a good quality, washable interior paint. The other option on the market for this repair is to purchase ceiling fabric that is available for RVs and is fairly easy to cut and install. If you go this route, be sure to buy the contact cement made for the specific fabric you order. Either way, the original foam and vinyl materials must be completely removed and sanded for prep.

vibration is, since on these hitches, the movement is also amplified along this translated horizontal axis.

Although this description has perhaps been a little long-winded and detailed, the point is that the whole problem begins with a small amount of movement of the ball mount within the receiver. The Roadmaster Quiet Hitch virtually eliminates receiver-related sway simply by removing the source of the problem; the initial excitation of the ball mount.

The device, which is essentially a U-bolt clamped around both the ball mount and receiver, secures the two components together. When installed correctly, it prevents any movement of the ball mount in the receiver. Additionally, it has the added benefit of preventing excess wear on the towing vehicle front tires due to trailer sway.

As I mentioned earlier, there are several things that can cause a trailer to sway or not track properly. Elements such as wind, road condition, tires, and trailer loading can cause trailer tracking problems. However, in the absence of any of these, a trailer should pull smoothly down the road. However, the receiver hitch may still cause a significant amount of trailer sway. By utilizing the small, simple, and inexpensive Quiet Hitch, you will never have to worry about a receiver hitch causing trailer sway.

Before heading out with your camping trailer, remember to secure your hitch pin, safety chains, equalizer system, anti-sway bar, and your Roadmaster Quiet Hitch.

Additional information on Roadmaster and their products can be found at www.roadmasterinc.com. ■
