There were some nervous glan-ces towards the skies Saturday morning as crowds gathered along the streets of downtown Trail in advance of the 2014 Silver City Days Firefighter’s parade.

But the rain held back and the assembled masses got to enjoy the hour-long procession which included many perennial favour-ites; the Maple Leaf Band and Trail Pipe Band, visiting royalty from cities and villages near and far, the Steps Dance company and Trail Gymnastics Club dancing and springing down the street, the Trail 531 Squadron march-ing, in-step, with serious looks on their faces.

In addition to the returning attractions, this year’s parade also featured the inaugural run of the recently delivered City of Trail float piloted by “Captain” Larry Abenante and showcasing the new Trail royalty.

The highly anticipated float included many familiar Trail landmarks such as the covered stairs, rock walls, an abundance of flowers and the Victoria St. Bridge.

Once the parade was complet-ed festival goers had time to get to the food fair and order lunch and let the kids enjoy a few of the rides before the skies opened up and drenched much of the fleeing crowd in a short-lived rainstorm.

Attendance at performances at the street stage throughout the day varied as the audience waxed and waned with the intermittent showers but even if some of the crowd may have been disappoint-ed with the weather there were still plenty of smiles to go around on the faces of the young.

The man whose borrowed canoe was used by in a tragic mishap on Slocan Lake on Saturday says the four victims were “wonderful kids.”

“They were really full of life and fun. Just marvellous people,” Dan Nicholson, publisher of the Valley Voice, said Monday. “It’s a huge loss.”

Lily Harmer-Taylor, 19, died after the canoe overturned just off Bigelow Bay on Saturday afternoon. Jule Wiltshire-Padfield, 15, Hayden Kyle, 21, and Skye Donnet, 18, remain missing.

All four lived in the New Denver area although Kyle was originally from Gibsons. Kyle and Harmer-Taylor both lived with Nicholson’s family in Rosebery, while Donnet lived with them for a while when he was younger.

Nicholson said he knew all of them except Kyle since infancy, as they were friends of his own kids. Each had one parent living locally and another somewhere else and they “bounced back and forth.”

Kyle had been staying with Nicholson’s family for a couple of months. He moved from the Sunshine Coast to Nelson where worked on a demolition job with Donnet, and the two became close friends.

Once the job ended, Kyle needed a place to live, and asked Nicholson if they had a spare room. They agreed he could stay with them until he got himself back on his feet.

Harmer-Taylor and Wiltshire-Padfield were a couple and planning to hitchhike to Regina to see her father. She was just finishing high school in New Denver. Last fall, Nicholson and his wife offered her a place to stay.

On Saturday, the four took the canoe from Nicholson’s porch, but left the lifejackets sitting in the mud room. He said they didn’t tell him they were taking it, although he’s never had any problem with them using it. “They’re 15 to 21. They don’t tell me everything they’re doing. If they’d asked, of course I would have said ‘Yes — be sure to grab the life jackets.’”

Nicholson knows they reached New Denver and spent a few hours in town, because he saw some of them there. The tragedy occurred on the return trip.

He believes the three locals were experienced canoeists. “They grew up on this side of the lake. They weren’t perhaps the strongest swimmers, but I always felt they could handle themselves in the water. I don’t know if Hayden could swim or paddle.”

Saturday, Nicholson saw several emergency vehicles go by. Minutes later, Donnet’s mother phoned to ask if he knew what was going on.

Soon after, he went outside and met the mother of the local search and rescue leader who told him that Harmer-Taylor was in trouble and suggested that he return to the hospital.

“They brought her in and tried to warm her up,” Nicholson said. They worked on her for five hours. “They tried the defibrillator several times.”

But to no avail. Harmer-Tayor died overnight. Her three companions remain missing.

Review bridge options, says petitionerFROM PAGE 1

Reasons for sign-ing the petition varied but at the crux was the unfinished busi-ness of the Old Trail Bridge, a 103-year-old structure deemed unsafe and closed to vehicles and pedes-trians in 2011.

“My hope is that council will follow the similar process that is being under-taken to review the Pattullo Bridge in Vancouver and to take time to review all the options in public,” said Gabana. “Before any consideration can be given to the demo-lition of this bridge an analysis will have to be made of the stabil-ity of the piers,” he continued.

“So why not do it now so we don’t end up in an embarrass-ing situation down the road.”

The city has con-sidered second cross-

ing options since a 2011 public consul-tation revealed that Trail residents sup-ported a vehicular crossing but naysayed the associated prop-erty tax hike related to a multi-million dollar bridge construction.

Prior to clos-ing the bridge, the City of Trail invested $935,000 over 10 years and at least another $10 million is required for repairs that would only extend the bridge’s lifespan 10 to 15 years, according the city’s report.

Trail council opted to build a foot-traf-fic only bridge that would have no impact on property taxes because the city’s por-tion of the $9.8 mil-lion project will be paid off over 25 years through long-term infrastructure fund-ing call the Federal Gas Tax revenue.

FROM PAGE 1“It doesn’t come any-

where close to what this program does; it’s 1,000-times deeper than what any-one could imagine.”

The pageant is only one aspect of the program that ends with 80 per cent of the marks (personal interview, training, speech, communi-ty knowledge) tallied prior to the pageant, when the remaining 20 marks were added for talent, evening gown and an impromptu question.

Pianist McPhee wowed the audience with music from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, which earned her the Benson Oil Talent Award of the evening while Hunt and Meyer shared the honour of the Knights of Pythias Speech Award for two very different messages.

Meyer engaged the crowd with her passion for basket-ball and how not making the junior girls basketball team only fuelled her more and resulted in her becom-ing “a dude with a ponytail”

until she found her place on the senior girls basketball team with regional and pro-vincial most valuable player recognition.

“Now when someone says ‘you’re not good enough,’ I can say ‘oh but I will be and so much more,’” she ended her speech with confidence.

Hunt put herself out there with a speech on peer pressure, admitting that she has succumbed to the inevi-table and made bad choices as a result. But she found her way back to her real val-ues and a clear perspective on what’s important in life.

“Always remember that true friends will not force you to do something you don’t want to do,” she said. “They will respect your ideas, opinions and beliefs.

“Knowing what it does to your self esteem, I made it my goal to be open minded and not to judge anyone because you don’t know their story or what they’ve been through.”

The candidates were not the only ones recog-

nized that night. Michelle Epp, program coordinator, and Bev Benson, pageant coordinator, surprised Trail Mayor Dieter Bogs with a special plaque in commem-oration of his years of sup-port for the program and well wishes for his nearing

retirement from municipal politics.

Last year’s ambassa-dors, outgoing Miss Trail Cheyanne Friess and Trail Princess Emily Dawson, said their final goodbyes, which were met with bou-quets and hugs galore from the crowd.

The past year was one for the books, they agreed.

Dawson took the time to mark the end of Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan on behalf of the Legion, with a moment of silence. Meanwhile, Friess was pleased to announce her bid to become a British Columbia Ambassador, open to any young man or woman age 17 to 24 who has previ-ously held an ambassador/royal title in the province.

Dawson plans on taking the first year of engineering at the University of Calgary and Friess is off to the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook to pursue dental assisting with an eventual goal of further orthodontic studies.

VICTORIA – The B.C. government has

heard the protests and is re-thinking its plan to impose new fees on placer mining oper-

ations, Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett says.

In an interview to

mark Mining Week in B.C., Bennett said he has heard the criti-cism from the mining industry about intro-ducing permit fees under the Mines Act that could apply to all mining activities, including placer mines that search for gold and metal ores in the loose rock around riv-ers.

“I’m determined to make sure that we’re not discour-aging the junior level exploration with fees,” Bennett said. “That’s certainly my goal, that they wouldn’t be charged any fees, but we’re going to have to see where this settles out.”

Placer mining has come a long way from its roots in the waves

of gold fever that swept over the Fraser Canyon, the Cariboo and the Klondike in Yukon. Larger placer mines can expect to pay for licensing and regulatory costs of their industry, as forest and other industries do on Crown land, Bennett said.

When the fees were proposed in February, the industry response was swift and nega-tive from the industry. NDP mines critic Scott Fraser said he was get-ting letters as soon as the legislation was pre-sented, and small oper-ators were the most worried.

“They’ll get hit by this, and according to them, they’ll be pushed right off their claims,” Fraser said.

The larger picture of B.C. mining remains bright, Bennett said. Red Chris copper and gold mine is set to open this summer with the completion of a new electrical trans-mission line to north-western B.C.

Copper Mountain near Princeton and Mount Milligan north of Prince George are up and producing metal ore, adding to mine activity that has tripled in terms of value to the economy since 2001.

Slumping prices for metallurgical coal have reversed some of the recent growth in coal production, with closures announced at two coal mines in the Tumbler Ridge region. Teck Resources has

also delayed its plan to reopen Quintette Coal, which it opened as one of the first Tumbler Ridge mines in 1982 and closed in 2000 due to low coal prices.

Bennett said the metallurgical coal market is subject to cycles that are closely tied to Asian demand for steel, and the long-term trend continues to be strong. B.C. and Australia are the world’s leading sources of high-grade metal-lurgical coal.

Minister eyes fee break for small-scale miners

FROM PAGE 1do not have the stam-ina to do what teachers do every day, namely, do their regular jobs, and provide super-vision,” he said. “It is also ironic that our district is cancelling recess when SD#5 in the East Kootenay has just reinstated it after initially cancelling it.”

In secondary schools, the reduced day means that selected breaks will be elimin-ated or reduced. While school start times will remain the same, the bell will ring 15 min-utes earlier with school buses adjusting their pickup times accord-ingly.

In order to reduce the supervision demands before and after school, SD20 is asking parents and guardians to try to drop off and pick up their children as close to the bell time as possible during this time.

Phase 1 of the job action has teachers refusing to supervise students outside the classroom except as an essential service order, arriving no more than one hour before class and leaving one hour after school hours, refusing all meetings except those related to work site occupational health and safety, and refusing to provide or receive written or elec-tronic communication from school managers.

Hotel closes over feds’ billT H E C A N A D I A N P R E S S

GIMLI, Man. - A Manitoba hotel owner says he has been forced to lay off more than 50 employees, close his hotel and put it up for sale because Ottawa owes him $3 million in unpaid bills.

Mike Bruneau, who owns Misty Lake Lodge in Gimli, says he’s owed the money for feeding and hous-ing dozens of aboriginal people who were displaced by the 2011 flood. Bruneau was paid a portion of the cash but says he is owed more.

The last evacuees left the hotel in November and their bills are still outstand-ing. Bruneau says he also needs to be reim-bursed for damage to the hotel and interest on the debt.

“They were in my hotel for 2 1/2 years,” he said Monday. “(The rooms) aren’t rentable. I wanted them to pay my bills, so I could fix the hotel up. They didn’t pay my bills, so I couldn’t go back to doing weddings and con-ferences, the kind of stuff I used to do.

“I had to shut the lodge down and lay everybody off. Now it’s for sale.”

T H E C A N A D I A N P R E S SJASPER, Alta. - The

newest tourist attrac-tion within Jasper National Park is not for the faint-hearted or the acrophobic.

Depending on the foot traffic, you can feel the Glacier Skywalk sway just a little as you’re looking through a glass floor almost 300 metres straight down to the valley below.

The $21-million attraction charges $24.95 per adult for access to a glass-floored observation platform that extends 30 metres above the Sunwapta Valley. The Skywalk opened to the public this month.

And while the views are stunning, the pri-vately owned glass deck in the sky, just off the Icefields Parkway, is not without contro-

versy.Many environment-

alists and residents of Jasper believe it is unnecessary and poses a risk to wild-life, particularly mountain goats and bighorn sheep. The Alberta Wilderness Association says it represents “encroach-ing commercializa-tion” into the national parks.

“We’re not con-vinced it really adds anything to the park. Anyone who wants to go to a national park wants to see, experi-ence and appreciate nature,” said con-servation specialist Sean Nichols. “When you take a glass-and-steel structure and stick it in the middle of nature one wonders what’s really natural about that? In my mind it’s so gimmicky. That’s the thing about gimmicks. At the end of the day they’re a hook to bring people in, but they don’t add anything.”

The project passed a federal environmental assessment in 2012 and was fully endorsed by Parks Canada.

“It really pro-vided a unique fit in terms of expanding the range of services

and experiences for visitors to the park,” said Greg Fenton, field unit superintendent for Parks Canada in Jasper.

Fenton said steps were taken to provide environmental protec-tion for the mountain goats and bighorn sheep in the area.

Brewster Canada, the travel company that built and operates the attraction, agreed to avoid construction during lambing sea-son and worked fewer hours a day during building to accom-modate animal move-ment.

“Brewster is required to implement an ongoing wildlife monitoring program just to make sure the protections of the environmental assess-ment imposed on the project are meeting the requirements,” said Fenton.

The glass floor is the focal point for visitors. It’s packed with tourists looking for spectacular photos. Employees do a con-tinuous circuit with brooms to brush away dust and keep the sur-face bright and shiny.

Alison Saunt and

her husband Paul from Manchester, England, stopped on their way from Banff to Jasper.

“It’s pretty amaz-ing, but when you look down, it’s not good,” she laughed. “But once you get your bearings, it’s spectacular and feels pretty safe, but there is a slight movement isn’t there?”

The area where the Skywalk is located was already a popu-lar viewing point for years before the pro-ject went ahead.

“The actual idea for this actually came from one of our driv-ers. He drove this high-way often and just said it’s an incredible view-point and it’s a great place to give visitors a new opportunity to check it out,” said Juliette Recompsat with Brewster Travel Canada. “The footprint of the whole attraction itself is no bigger than the viewpoint that was previously here.

“To us the environ-mental concerns and any controversy no longer surround this project. Now that it’s built we’ve seen a lot of great reactions from people.”

T H E C A N A D I A N P R E S SWOODY POINT, N.L. - Work continues to

dismember a blue whale near Woody Point, N.L., today but plans for a second blue whale beached in nearby Rocky Harbour are still up in the air.

Mark Engstrom of Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum says he’ll likely know by Tuesday whether his team can take it on as well.

It’s believed the two whales are among nine that were crushed or drowned in heavy sea ice earlier this spring.

The museum is labelling each bone and preserving samples that will be trucked to Ontario and later available to global scien-tists.

Local officials had asked for help to deal with the huge carcasses after the federal government said it wasn’t responsible.

Engstrom says he had hoped to dismem-ber both whales but it’s a massive job that has cost more than expected.

He expects to finish work on the first whale on schedule Tuesday, five days after work began.

Controversial skywalk opens to public

T H E C A N A D I A N P R E S SOTTAWA - NDP Leader Tom

Mulcair is making one last appeal to Conservative MPs to vote against their government’s controversial overhaul of election rules.

New Democrats say the so-called Fair Elections Act remains a trav-esty, even though the government has backed off some of the most contentious provisions.

Mulcair is urging 20 Tory MPs, who’ve shown an interest in pro-moting and protecting democracy in the past, to show the courage of their convictions when it comes to Bill C-23.

MPs will spend several hours later today voting on proposed amend-ments, including 45 initiated by the government after the original bill was panned by electoral experts in Canada and abroad.

Mulcair says the amendments don’t go far enough to redeem the bill, which he claims is aimed at ensuring the Conservatives can cheat during elections without get-ting caught.

A final Commons vote on the bill is scheduled for Tuesday evening, after which it will be sent to the Conservative-dominated Senate for approval.

OPINION

NDP’s farmland holy war falls flatThe NDP’s holy

war against changes to the Agricultural Land

Reserve got nastier last week, as it became clear it was defenders of the status quo who were being mowed down.

Ever since legisla-tion was tabled to divide the ALR into two zones, with greater emphasis on social and economic needs to help viability of farms in the Kootenay, Interior and North regions, almost all the protest has been from unaffected areas. And much of it depends on emotion rather than fact.

In the legislature, Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog rose to praise the late Dave Stupich, who birthed the ALR sacred cow as agriculture minis-ter in 1973.

Krog likened Stupich to the Biblical Daniel for his bravery in preserving farmland for our chil-dren’s children.

Cowichan Valley MLA Bill Routley did his sig-

nature “jiggery pokery” routine, this time accus-ing cabinet minister Bill Bennett of being “giddy” at the prospect of pay-ing off his friends with development land.

Before he gets too jiggery outside the pro-tection of the legislative chamber, he would be well advised to find some evi-dence.

Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson, who at least represents an area being given broader latitude for secondary uses on farm-land, warned of drought in California.

The history of this is currently a hot topic in the quasi-religious cli-mate change debate.

Meanwhile in the real British Columbia, life and farming go on under the existing farmland protec-tion regime.

The largest ALR exclu-sion in B.C. history took a big step forward last week, as a federal-provin-cial review panel issued its report on the Site C dam proposed for the Peace

River.The panel noted that

the dam would flood 2,775 hectares of farmland, representing all seven categories of soil quality. Opponents use a figure about twice that size, as if all the affected land was farmable.

The panel accepted that this land, including the small amount of micro-climate bottom land, rep-resents 0.2 per cent of the Peace region’s farm receipts.

I would add that’s because what is farmed at all is mostly growing hay, which requires minimum

capital and labour.“It has potential, to be

sure, but its unique and irreplaceable contribu-tion would be for those labour-intensive crops like vegetables, which are not remotely practical in a labour-short region,” the report states.

We have to bring in Mexican guest workers to get vegetable and fruit crops off in the Fraser Valley and Okanagan. For a five-month growing sea-son in the bush outside Fort St. John? This is a classic example of the reli-gious fervor that replaces reason among the south-ern faithful of the ALR.

And how is the status quo working?

Summerland council just voted to swap 80 hec-tares of flat farmland for 90 hectares further away in the Summerland Hills. The town is on restricted lakeshore terrain and the council wants to increase its urban zone, using the community need provi-sions that are enhanced by the current legislative

amendments.This was after a loud

demonstration organ-ized with the help of a fake grassroots protest machine called LeadNow, complete with slick signs and website. (LeadNow also helped round up anti-pipeline protesters this past weekend.)

The media were fooled as usual, but not Summerland council. LeadNow has moved on to lining up people to flood the Agricultural Land Commission with form letters and petitions against Summerland’s plan.

The B.C. Agriculture Council, whose board first supported and then objected to the ALR amendments, has clarified its objections.

It wants flexibility for secondary uses extended to the prime farmland zones of the Okanagan, Fraser Valley and south-ern Vancouver Island.

Friday’s Puzzle solved

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SNEW YORK - Fox will air new series on six

of seven nights in the fall, including the much-awaited “Batman” prequel “Gotham.”

Fox has the larger immediate challenge, as ratings have plummeted this season in large part due to the sinking fortunes of “American Idol.”

“Gotham” will air on Mondays, following a 12-year-old future caped crusader in a city teem-ing with crime. An unscripted series, “Utopia,” will place people in an undeveloped area and ask them to develop a new civilization. It will air Tuesdays and Fridays in the fall.

Re: Columns by David Black, “Plenty of benefits to building a refinery in B.C.” (Trail Times April 23) and “Great risks in shipping bitu-men to Asia” (Trail Times April 24).

Continued safe marine and pipeline transport of hydro-carbons is in everybody’s interest so Canadians can realize value for resources and oil producers can continue to deliver jobs and economic benefits. No one wants a spill of any product at any time.

The performance track rec-ord over the past 50 years is good, but even still, work is ongoing to improve preven-tion and ensure producers, transportation companies and spill-responders have the best information available to manage products safely and make the best plans possible for response, containment and clean-up in the event of an incident.

Black’s articles  incorrectly suggested the Canadian oil industry is not interested in the proposed refinery project and that transporting diluted bitumen is more risky than transporting other types of oil because of its chemical prop-

erties.Fact is, oil producers are

seeking increased access to existing and new markets – in Canada, the United States and internationally – to satisfy market demand for increasing Canadian oil production. All options to achieve that goal are worthy of study.

And diluted bitumen – oil sands bitumen diluted with natural gas liquids that allow it to flow – is no more danger-ous than other types of crude oil.

Chemically, there’s noth-ing about diluted bitumen the transportation system can-not be prepared to manage. Whether it moves by pipelines or tankers, diluted bitumen meets all the same specifica-tions and behaves the same as other crude oils.

Oil floats on water if it has an API gravity above water’s 10 degree API gravity. Diluted bitumen has an API gravity of 20-22 degrees. Any type of oil spilled in water, eventually “weathers” and can be driven below the surface by waves or currents. Diluted bitumen behaves the same way.

There have been several sci-entific studies completed on

diluted bitumen. Earlier this year, the federal government released a research study that demonstrated diluted bitumen floats on salt water – even after evaporation and expos-ure to light.

The study was commis-sioned by Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Natural Resources Canada as part of the gov-ernment’s plan to implement a world-class prevention, preparedness and response regime for marine transpor-tation. Results of the study will be used to inform spill responders and help guide more research.

Our industry is focused on responsible development of Canada’s resources. We wel-come transparency on our safety and environmental per-formance, based on sound sci-ence.

As producers, we transport oil with care and attention at all times. We expect all trans-portation providers to deliver safe services in a responsible manner.

Greg StringhamCanadian Association of

Petroleum ProducersCalgary

Transport system can handle bitumen

In a letter to this paper Greg Stringham, on behalf  of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, makes  assertions about the  behavior of diluted bitu-men (dilbit) in salt water that are at best half-truths.

He states that dilbit  floats on salt water and that it is no more dangerous at sea than other types  of oil.  That is wrong.

It is more dangerous at sea, and infinitely  more so than refined fuels like diesel and gasoline.

What Stringham doesn’t mention is that the same report from Environment  Canada that he quotes from, goes  on to say that dilbit sinks in sea-water when  there is sediment present.

Another  study by a top U.S.  environmental chemist, Jeff Short, says the same thing. It was filed by the Gitxaala Nation to the National Energy Board in March 2013, so Stringham is well aware of it.

That study says animal and plant matter like plankton, as well as sediment, cause  the dilbit to sink.

Our entire coast has sediment and plankton in abundance. All  our rivers are glacial and full of silt. Plankton is  omnipresent, which is why  the whales are here, and shallow seas like Hecate Strait throw up huge amounts of sediment from the bottom in storms.

Dilbit will sink in our wat-ers if there is a spill and it will harden up  like caulk-ing material on beaches and the intertidal zone. The inter-tidal zone includes large mud flats in the midcoast because the tidal range is more than 20 feet there. How would we ever get them clean again?

Stringham also says our Canadian oil industry is inter-ested in  the Kitimat refinery idea.

That is  news to me.  I  have talked to all  the compan-ies and there is no interest

whatsoever.  That is why I am spearheading the project.    It will keep dilbit out of tank-ers and  provide an enormous value-add for BC.

Canada’s oil industry needs a west coast pipe-line.  Coastal First Nations, the Yinka Dene First Nations, Prince  Rupert, Kitimat, Terrace, Smithers, the prov-incial and  federal NDP, the federal Liberals, the prov-incial and  federal Green Party, many  blue collar unions and the majority of folks in B.C. are against Northern  Gateway’s  idea of putting dilbit in tankers.

A refinery is economically viable.  Why is it so hard for our oil industry to see  that the way  forward is to build a green refinery which will cut greenhouse gases by 50 per cent, create thousands of jobs, generate billions of new annual taxes, and gain accept-ance for a safe pipeline?

DAVIES (NEE NORDLUND), MAY ILENE – May 23, 1922 – April 26, 2014

It is with deep sad-ness that we announce

the passing of May Ilene Davies (nee Nordlund) on April 26 at Langley Memorial Hospital.

May was born in New Norway, Alberta on May 23, 1922. In 1925 she moved to Kimber-ley, B.C. After gradua-tion from high school, May attended Pittman Business School in

Vancouver, returning to Kimberley to work as a cashier at the Bank of Montreal. In 1944 she married Ken. After the birth of their rst child in 1947, May’s priority became one of being a mom. In 1971 May and Ken moved to Trail where they resided for 36 years before moving to Langley, B.C to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

An avid gardener, knitter, pianist, bridge player and crossworder, May also enjoyed her sports – bowling, bad-minton and golf. A lifetime member of United Church Women (U.C.W.), May was ac-tive in Trail United Church and sang in the choir. Another passion was the Hospital Aux-iliary where she worked tirelessly wrapping

bandages for use in the hospital.

May’s greatest joy was her family. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Ken, in 2008. May will be lovingly remem-bered by her children Leiana Wilson (Craig), Robert (Karen), Co-lin (Sharon) and Ilene Dyck (Andrew), her grandchildren Megan (Graham), Aaron (Ka-trina), Brittany, Jessy, Courtney, Bronwyn, Tanner, Marissa and Kelsey; great-grand-sons Braden, Owen and Mitchell; brother Lloyd Nordlund and brother-in-law Alec Frame and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday May 23 at 1:00pm at Henderson’s Langley Funeral Home, 20786

DOUBLE THE FUN AT SILVER CITY DAYS

ART HARRISON PHOTO

Vincent and Kenneth Ferarro take a break after watching a long parade to enjoy a bite of hotdog bun at the Silver City Days Food Fair.

T H E C A N A D I A N P R E S STORONTO - Jeff Plewman,

the Toronto electric violinist and experimental musician who per-formed as Nash the Slash with his face enveloped in surgical banda-ges, has died. He was 66.

His death was announced on Facebook by friend and collabor-ator Robert Vanderhorst, who wrote that Plewman died over the week-end. Vanderhorst also confirmed the death in an interview with the Toronto Star.

Plewman co-founded the pro-gressive-rock band FM, who issued their debut “Black Noise” in 1977,

and quickly established a long career as an eccentric solo artist whose compositions were nearly impossible to classify.

On his atmospheric solo records, Plewman would sometimes play all the instruments himself.

He was secretive about his iden-tity, performing with a tuxedo, top hat and sunglasses as well as the rags on his face, and he was evasive when asked in interviews for his real name.

He announced his retirement from music in 2012, writing on his website that it was “time to roll up the bandages.”

Sun shines on record Silver City Days Fun Run B y J i m B a i l e y

Times Sports EditorThe Silver City

Days Fun Run was an unmitigated success from the beautiful sunny day to the rec-ord number of partici-pants that took to the course on Sunday.

Close to 300 resi-dents and corporate citizens enjoyed the sunshine and a brisk five or 10-kilometre run or walk through Sunningdale and downtown Trail.

The Run was also buoyed by its largest corporate participant, Teck’s Inspiring Health and Wellness initiative that saw close to 100 employees take a walk or run in the park, while also recognizing the final day of Mental Health Awareness week.

“It’s been a great turnout for us,” said Gord Menelaws safety chair for USW Local 480. “For us a small community we’ve been rocked hard in the last month with a couple of events and we felt it was the perfect time to really focus on mental health and mental ill-ness, so that’s where our focus is.

“When people are proud to where their Teck T-shirt and be part of the Teck team, it’s nice just to say to people - that for today especially - we are all one as a Teck family and it’s pretty cool.”

The great weather helped boost numbers on the day of the event with over 80 people signing up Sunday morning,

The race got under-way at Gyro Park follow-ing the loop through Sunningdale and the scenic Columbia River, through downtown and West Trail before

finishing at Gyro. While the run went

off without a hitch, a technical glitch delayed the award pro-ceedings. In the end, the winners were sort-ed out and rewarded with medals, ribbons, and gift certificates from Gericks Sports.

Trail’s Mike Zahn sprinted to top spot for the “sixth or seventh time” in the 5-K men’s, while Barbara Brych took the women’s 5-kilometre crown. In the 10,000-metre run a pair of Boston Marathon veterans claimed the men’s and women’s category with Mike Henrickson win-

ning the men’s side in just over 37 minutes while Heather Johnson claimed first-place prize for the women.

H e n d r i c k s o n , who ran the Boston Marathon just three weeks ago, led the Fun Run from start to fin-ish and when asked what the difference was between the marathon and the 10-k event the Trail runner quipped: “It’s much more peace-ful. I had the course to myself for most of it and it was wonderful.”

The Boston mara-thon is a daunting 26-mile odyssey, yet, the 10-k Fun Run course proved a chal-

lenge for the Fortis worker who found himself tiring at the half-way mark.

“For a shorter race, you’re wheezing and hurting pretty good. I found myself wish-ing this was over and done with a lot more intensely than I did in Boston. In Boston you know it’s a marathon so you know you’re going to be at it for a while, so you throttle it back a bit. 10 K you really have no reason to hold anything back, so you run really hard – and it hurts.”

Hendrickson was impressed with the numbers of partici-

pants, and happy to have enjoyed it with his expectant wife on Mother’s Day. He will also take on the Christina Lake Triathlon in June and a half-marathon in Creston in September.

Johnson, mean-while, participated in the 2013 Boston Marathon that was marred by the finish-line bombings that killed three people and injured close to 300 others. The Fruitvale resident and her hus-band Chris Kent emerged unscathed but the experience was understandably unset-tling.

“I thought about going back, but I thought it would be just a bit of a gong show, a little over-whelming, and I just wanted to let the race settle a little bit, and enjoy what I had. But the goal is to go back at some point,” said Johnson.

The Fun Run may not quite compare, but it is an enjoyable prim-er for the couple who have big race plans for the summer.

“It was awesome, this race is always a lot of fun,” said Johnson. “The route is beautiful, challenging, you know you got some little

hills but lots of fun and there’s always lots of fast guys and some fast girls to chase too.”

Johnson and Kent are preparing for an extreme six-day, 120-mile race through Colorado in August. Johnson will also com-pete in the Blackfoot Ultra, a 50-kilometre ultra-marathon in Edmonton on May 24.

Zahn, the perennial 5-k men’s winner, had his eye set on breaking the 18-minute barrier, but will have to wait another year to take a shot at it after finish-ing the 2014 Fun Run in 19 minutes flat.

FROM PAGE 11“Same routine, I run to work,” said Zahn. “I

extended the route a little bit this year, I thought it would improve my time, but maybe with my age I’m getting slower, because I added about 12 seconds or so, but I felt a lot better this year.”

Brych, a former competitive runner from Nelson, ran a scorching 5 kilometres in 20 minutes and four seconds to capture the overall women’s 5-km title.

“I’m a retired competitor so I’m doing the smaller stuff,” said Brych. “It felt better than I thought it would, and again it’s a lot slower than I use to run, but it felt really good. The weather, good energy, everybody is happy to be here. It’s nice to go to these Fun Runs because everybody is in a good mood.”

Due to technical problems, the complete results were unavailable at press time. Results will be posted when available.

By Times sTaffTrail native Trevor

Johnson picked up an assist and was solid defensively as Team Italy got off to a good start at the IIHF World Hockcey Championships in Belarus with a 2-1 vic-tory over France on Sunday.

Johnson assisted on the tying goal on a power play when he found Guillio Scandella in the slot with five

minutes to play in the second period. But it was his work on spe-cial teams that made the difference, as the Italians killed off five French power plays including a two-man advantage for almost two minutes.

Markus Gander net-ted the winner with 58 seconds remaining to hand France its first loss of the tournament.

“It was great to get our first win and get our confidence going,” Italy coach Tom Pokel said.

France began the tournament with a stunning 3-2 shootout upset over Team Canada in their opening match. Italy lost its first game to Norway 3-0 and will plays Denmark today at 9:45 a.m.

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SNEW YORK - NBC, which rebounded this

season from a stubborn ratings slump, will try to build on its gains with a dozen new series that include dramas starring Debra Messing and Katherine Heigl and a pair of comedies produced by Will Ferrell.

In the 2014-15 schedule announced Sunday Messing will star as a homicide detective and working mom in “The Mysteries of Laura” on Wednesdays this fall, while former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Heigl will return to the small screen as a CIA agent in “State of Affairs” on Mondays starting in November.

NBC decided to cancel “Dracula,” ”Community,“ ”Revolution,“ ”Growing Up Fisher,“ ”Believe,“ ”Crisis,“ ”Ironside,“ ”The Michael J. Fox Show,“ ”Sean Saves the World“ and ”Welcome to the Family.“

Leisure

Dear Annie: My hus-band and I are in our mid-20s, have been married for five years and have two children. We are both full-time students with jobs. My job is full time and his is part time. However, our responsibilities at home are split so that I do 95.5 percent of everything, and he does what’s left. My husband refuses to look for a full-time job and seems quite content being in debt and struggling to pay bills.

He also refuses to create a budget and won’t read any articles I bring home on the subject of communica-tion in marriage. He declines all suggestions of family time or date nights. He prefers to be alone, and that includes sleeping by himself.

I feel stuck. Is this a phase that will pass? Should I get a divorce? When we married, we said it was forever, but that was when he promised that every-thing would be split

50/50 and that we would share our lives. What do I do? -- Young and Stuck

Dear Young: This is not a phase that will pass. This is what your husband is going to be like as long as he can get away with it. The fact that he pre-fers to sleep alone indicates that there is more going on than an uneven split in house-hold chores.

Get some counsel-ing, preferably with your husband, but without him, if neces-sary. Find out what you can change, what you cannot and what you are willing to live with.

Dear Annie: I have been married for eight

years and knew my husband for four years before that. The prob-lem is my stepchildren.

Whenever there is a family function, invita-tions are addressed to my husband only, as if I don’t exist. My hus-band’s children always buy him gifts for his birthday and holidays, but I get a gift from one or two of them, and the rest ignore me. I sign everything, “Dad and Mary” or “Grandpa Bob and Grandma Mary,” but the thank-you always goes to “Dad” or “Grandpa.” His grown children are nice to me, but I am not included in anything. Even on the wedding invita-tion from his son, it was addressed to “Bob Jones and Family.”

I have children of my own, and they would never dream of treating their stepdad like this. Am I being too sensitive? I am at the point where I don’t want to participate in any more birthday par-ties, holidays or any-

thing else that involves getting together with his kids.

I have tried so hard to get them to like me. I met their Dad after his marriage was over, and his wife had cheat-ed on him. They treat their stepdad great. So why do I get this treat-ment? I don’t think it’s ever going to get any better. Am I right to say forget about them? -- Feel Left Out

Dear Feel: We think the kids like you well enough, but they aren’t entirely comfortable with your position. And where their mother no doubt insists that they treat her husband with respect, your husband doesn’t seem to be demanding the same. He needs to tell his kids that notes and invita-tions to the two of you need to be addressed that way, and that your special occasions should be recognized with at least a card. Meanwhile, we hope you can handle some of this with humor

instead of bitterness. It will help.

Dear Annie: I was taken back by “Betsey’s” response to “Concerned Mother.” To this day, I send my mother a text telling her I am home when returning from a trip. This is something I

have done since I was a latchkey kid, all the way through college and now as a 33-year-old working mom. It gives both of us peace of mind. My 42-year-old husband does the same thing. We do not feel suffocated. It’s just what we do when we

know others love us. -- Latchkey Mom

Leisure

For Wednesday, May 14, 2014 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is an intense day for you. Venus is at odds with Pluto, and it is a Full Moon day. Count to five before you respond to others to avoid friction. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Full Moon today is the only Full Moon opposite your sign all year, which is why it is difficult to get along with others. You might be doing a slow boil about something. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You feel so intense when dealing with others today that an argument might arise. It’s important to be aware that everyone feels intense because of the Full Moon energy today. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Power struggles with authority figures are likely today. If possible, don’t even

go there. The Full Moon today makes everyone load-ed for bear. Run away! LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) You can’t please everyone today, especially authority figures, so just accept this. Today’s Full Moon could trigger arguments about politics, religion and travel plans. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) This is an accident-prone day because of the Full Moon. Therefore, slow down and take it easy. Pay attention. Avoid squabbles about inheritances and finances. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) A difference of values might set off an argument today, because people are touchy! Even relations with those who are close to you can turn into ego battles. Ouch. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Today the only Full

Moon in your sign all year is taking place, which is why it’s challenging dealing with others. Partners and co-workers require extreme patience. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) This is a challenging day at work. Just accept this. The Full Moon will create intense energy for dealing with children, romantic interests and co-workers. (Yikes!)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Be patient in dealing with children today, and similar-ly, be patient with romantic partners. Domestic squab-bles might arise because people want their own way. (Yes, some adults are chil-dren.) AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Family quarrels and domestic upsets might take place today. Relations with

siblings and neighbors also are testy. This is an opportu-nity for you to demonstrate grace under pressure. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Be careful, because this is an accident-prone day due to the Full Moon’s ener-gy. Avoid squabbles about money and possessions. Easy does it. YOU BORN TODAY You have high standards for yourself and others because

you are a perfectionist. You are energetic and quick to see opportunities. You like to be modern and up-to-date in whatever you do, and often are “ahead of your time.” This year might be one of the most powerful years of your life. It’s a good time to liquidate assets and sell property. Dream big! Birthdate of: Francesca Annis, actress; Tim Roth, actor; Amber Tamblyn, actress.

The Home of Champions welcomed its 2014 inductees last Thursday with a ceremony and a march to the monument in downtown Trail. Clockwise from top right; Brian LeRose accepts his plaque from Trail Coun. Kevin Jolly. Harper Robinson gets a joyful lift from inductee and dad Todd Robinson. Another father-daughter moment came when Bill Hanlon walked his inductee daughter Theresa Hanson to the monument for her plaque. The Trail Pipe Band led the inductees to the monument. From the left; Todd Robinson, Gordon Titsworth, on behalf of the Trail Pipe Band, Theresa Hanson, Thea Culley, Pat Iannone and Bruce LeRose. (There was no representative for inductee Dr. Harold Menkes). Thea Culley poses with her Rossland Secondary School field hockey coach Donna Hebert. Pat Iannone accepts his plaque from Thea Stayanovich.
