GAS LINE RE-ROUTED

Workers from FortisBC were busy digging space for a new gas line in downtown Trail on Monday. City crews discovered an existing gas line passed through the sewer line at Pine Ave. and Farwell St. To prevent dangers from any possible leaks, FortisBC re-routed the gas line underneath the sewer line.

Trail's poor air quality may be keeping most indoors, wishing the smoke would clear. But the heavy haze residents are experienc-ing is, in fact, good for the region, according to Kevin Skrepnek, BC Wildfire Service's chief fire information officer.

“The smoke has been so dense it has actu-ally calmed some of the fire activity we're seeing, particularly in Southern B.C.,” he said via teleconference Monday afternoon.

“The smoke almost takes on the same quality that cloud cover would," he added.

Installing electric car charging stations in downtown Trail is not just about providing power to one or two motorists – it's all part of a bigger picture.

Politicians representing com-munities from Princeton to Fernie have long advocated to promote the 650-kilometre stretch of Highway 3 as an electric vehicles corridor.

Trail and Grand Forks are the most recent cities to sign on with the Sun Country Highway Municipal Destination program – and that's good news for Andrew Chewter.

Chewter commutes between Nelson and Teck Trail Operations in

his electric vehicle called a Nissan Leaf. He's passionate and well informed on electric power versus fossil fuel, and writes about the cars, travel plans, and charging stations on his website KootenayEVFamily.ca.

Against a smoky backdrop a crane lowers down roofing equipment from a recent job on top of the Trail Community Health Centre.

FROM PAGE 11Trail’s air quality

is considered at high risk, according to air quality values posted to bcairquality.ca.

The online tool maps out the prov-ince’s air quality down to the nearest com-munity with a simple click of the mouse.

The province mea-sures particulate mat-ter 2.5 (from fire), ozone and nitrogen dioxide levels in the air to determine air quality.

The numbered and coloured scale offers different refer-rals based on whether website users are at low, moderate or high risk.

Those most at risk when smoke clouds air quality include children, older adults, pregnant women, those with a chronic lung condition, or people who have been outside in these con-ditions doing extrane-ous physical activity.

Dr. Golmohammadi simply recommends staying inside when there is heavy smoke and even using an air filtration system like an air conditioner. But not all systems can get rid of the small particles.

*****The fire danger

rating remains high in the Southeast Fire Centre, where seven of the 13 wildfires of note are burning in the province.

The latest from

Karlie Shaughnessy of the Southeast Fire Centre:

- The fire west of Rossland in the Big Sheep Creek area is 190 hectares and 60 per cent contained. Thirty-three BC Wildfire Service per-sonnel, and five heli-copters are onsite. - The fire burning 10 kilometres north of Christina Lake on the Paulson Pass is 300 hectares in size and 80 per cent con-tained. Fifty-five per-sonnel, two pieces of heavy equipment and two helicopters are working on this fire. For information on Highway 3, visit www.drivebc.ca

- The Hanna Creek fire, located north-west of Oasis (Hanna Creek) is currently 0.64 hectares and is 100 per cent con-tained

- The Tenderloin Mountain, 20 km south of Edgewood is 50 hectares and 60 per cent contained. Twenty-two personnel are on-site and two helicopters. - The fire 5.6 km northwest of Renata is currently 26 hectares and 100 per cent contained. Twenty-eight fire-fighters, three heli-copters and one piece of heavy equipment were on site Monday.

- West of Rock Creek, the blaze is estimated at 4,534 hectares and 75 per cent contained.

Resources: 187

firefighters, including 65 contract firefight-ers, eight helicopters and 19 pieces of heavy equipment working on the incident.

- Stickpin Fire in Washington is south-east of Grand Forks, with the northern most part of the fire currently estimated

at 5 km south of the border and 19,240 hectares. BC Wildfire Service crews began fire suppression in the U.S on Sunday, and will be responsi-ble for “Branch 3” on the northeast portion.

Resources: 33 firefighters, three officers and two

pieces of heavy equip-ment. Smokey con-ditions are currently restricting air opera-tions on the fire.

Fires to date: (As of August 21, 2015) So far this season, the Southeast fire centre has seen 553 fires, which have burned 10,490 hectares.

FROM PAGE 1Three units are being

shipped to Trail at no cost from Sun Country, which is a Canadian-owned company that promotes the adoption of zero emission transportation.

Using $9,000 from its Climate Action Reserve Fund, the city committed to install-ing the stations within four weeks of receipt, and must provide power as a no-cost service.

Trail is the second local community to join the eco-friendly incentive. Rossland has been on board since 2013 with two charging

stations located in a lot on Washington Street.

“Right now, (with the exception of Rossland) from Nelson to Osoyoos, it’s kind of like the charging waste-land,” said Chewter. “There’s no public infrastructure at this point. So for Trail to be adding them, that helps to fill the gap, for sure.”

With the exception of the Tesla Model S, Chewter says electric cars are meant for use within a city or as a suburban commuter, and not (yet) for long distance travel.

“It’s for things we do on a regular basis, like the daily

commute, or going to the ski hill on the weekend or bik-ing (trails) in the evening,” he said. “We are doing these longer trips because we want to try it. But it’s not practi-cal to travel between here and Kelowna at this point. We do save money, but most people aren’t willing to stop for three hours, twice a day to charge their car – only to save maybe $30.”

For those who choose to drive electric over gas, two units for Tesla models and one for conventional (EV-60) vehicles will be installed in the Victoria Street parking

lot this fall. Each unit is considered

“Level 2,” meaning a full charge takes up to three hours.

“This fits in with City of Trail climate action goals,” says Trail Mayor Mike Martin. “And the whole idea is to pro-mote Highway 3 as a viable alternative through southern British Columbia,” he added. “And make it attractive for electric vehicle owners to choose this route and come and enjoy the ambience of our country side, as well as residents who drive electric vehicles.”

Two Kootenay regional directors are thrilled with the announcement that new ferries will be constructed for Glade and Harrop, but some residents in their communities continue to pine for the installation of a fixed link.

“We’re pretty happy we’re getting a new ferry because we just had our capacity cut by a Transport Canada rul-ing down to 50,” said Area E director Ramona Faust.

That will create problems come September, because there are at least 38 elementary school students who take the bus each morning.

Starting on September 6, that may cause back-ups.

“The fact we’ll have a new ferry in three years means the pain won’t go on forever.”

But some haven’t given up on the idea of a bridge.

“There is a group of concerned cit-izens who have met about the ferry since the capacity was cut and I think you’ll find there’s a difference of opin-ion even among them. I think anything at this point that will see us into the next 20 years will be welcomed.”

Andy Davidoff of Area I said some residents are hostile to the idea of a bridge.

“If you go across the river, the people there have a quality of life similar to the Gulf Islands, where you have a degree of isolation and privacy, whereas some other people want the convenience of having a bridge.”

But either way, his constituents would like to see the cost comparison between the two projects to confirm that replacing the ferry is the most “efficacious” route to go.

“If the ministry has determined this is the cheaper, most efficient way to go then we welcome all the enhancements. For some of my constituents replacing the ferry is not the first choice but at the end of the day we all deserve to see

the cost-benefit analysis.”He hopes the higher capacity of

the new ferry will allow more com-mercial vehicles to make the trip, and expressed hope that the river ramps will be upgraded.

“There are really rapid fluctuations of the river at Glade because of BC Hydro. They control the water going through each dam in the Kootenays as part of the canal agreement.”

Faust said conversations with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) have been col-laborative and respectful.

That being said, she thinks there could be more consideration for the specifics demands of their community.

The news of reduced capacity came shortly before the busy wedding sea-son, and she’s concerned it may affect their hosing of the upcoming MS Bike Tour.

“I know everyone does the best they can, and we’re thankful for that, but

perhaps we need a little more con-sideration for the lives we lead.”

Though some residents of Harrop and Glade remain ambivalent about the upcoming replacement of the fer-ries in their community, according to the Ministry of Transportation it’s the cheaper of the two options.

“For both the Harrop and Glade fer-ries a cost analysis was completed and it was determined that ferries continue to offer the most affordable solution, now and for the forseeable future,” wrote public affairs officer Sonia Lowe.

The bidding process will be open for approximately five weeks, and up to three respondents will be shortlisted for the second stage: request for pro-posals. If all goes according to plan the first vessel will begin construction in 2016, with all vessels expected to be in service by the end of 2018.

The new Glade ferry will be able to hold 9 vehicles, while the new Harrop one will be able to hold 24.

OPINION

Is B.C. really burning? Not exactlyOn a recent drive

through the B.C. Interior, I passed through McLure

and Barriere, communities north of Kamloops that were devastated by wildfire in 2003.

While these com-munities have recovered, blackened tree trunks are still visible where fires burned for 75 days and forced the evacuation of 3,800 people.

With the early start to this year’s fire sea-son, the media attention and effects of an unusual spring drought, you might think that B.C. is on pace to match that ter-rible summer.

You would be wrong. As of last week, area burned and money spent by the B.C. Wildfire Service had only just exceeded the totals for mid-August dur-ing last summer’s fire sea-son, which were high but not remarkable.

The number of indi-vidual fires is higher this

year, but that’s mostly a result of lightning storm patterns. Spending has topped $200 million, as it did last year at this time before finishing just below $300 million. The 2003 total was above $400 million, and the 2009 sea-son was slightly below that.

Forests Minister Steve Thomson cautions that there are still many weeks to go and hot, dry con-ditions are expected for much of that.

Once the damage is done for the year, the min-istry reviews the impact on forests and begins assessment of which areas should be replanted and which should be left to regenerate naturally.

Pine forests need fire to regenerate, and the strat-egy in recent years has been to allow fires to burn out naturally and contain them to protect people and property.

Decades of fire suppres-sion, based on viewing

Crown forests strictly as a timber resource, helped create conditions for the beetle epidemic that has left vast quantities of dead wood to fuel more fires.

The 2003 fire season set the tone for politic-al debate on forest fire policy that has continued since then.

The opposition points to recommendations from former Manitoba premier Gary Filmon that remov-ing fuel from around communities is the best protection.

This task has proven

impossibly big, especially as rural community tax bases shrink, but the ideo-logical dance continues in Victoria. The NDP campaigned in 2013 on a promise to double tree planting, and its general approach is to spend more money and hire more staff.

Speaking of political dances, Premier Christy Clark has made a couple of appearances at fire sites where homes and busi-nesses have been threat-ened or destroyed.

(Today’s big-city media formula is to empha-size danger and promote attacks on premiers of all stripes. If they don’t visit disasters, they are cal-lous and uncaring. If they do, they’re exploiting the situation for photo ops.)

In her first fire scene appearance this summer, Clark warned that drought and huge fires may be “the new normal” for B.C. as climate warms and shifts. This is great positioning

for the government’s plan to attend the latest global climate doom festival in Paris this fall, but it’s not borne out by recent forest fire results.

In terms of dollars spent and area burned, the years 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 were all well below average. Last year and 2009 were sub-stantially above average, but 2008 and 2013 were among the quietest years on record.

Is drought the “new normal” too? The B.C. government’s own climate change forecast is for increasing overall precipi-tation, albeit with more rain and less snow.

Snowpacks for south-ern B.C. were indeed the lowest on record this past winter, but that record only goes back 31 years. And when were high snow-fall records last broken? That would be 2011.

T H E A S S O C I A T E D P R E S SNEW YORK - “Straight Outta Compton” easily

maintained its box-office lead with an estimated $26.8 million in ticket sales over a sleepy late summer weekend at the multiplexes.

The N.W.A biopic, a much buzzed-about hit, dominated over the late August releases that often characterize Hollywood’s dog days of sum-mer. It has now made $111.5 million in two weeks.

The low-budget horror sequel “Sinister 2” fared the best of the new releases, opening with $10.6 million.

“Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation” came in second with $11.7 million in its fourth week.

PROUDLY SERVING THE COMMUNITIES OF ROSSLAND, WARFIELD, TRAIL, MONTROSE, FRUITVALE & SALMO

TIMES PHOTO

From the Trail Creek News in 1895 to the Trail Times in 2015, the venerable local newspaper and its staff (from the left; Liz Bevan, Shannon McIlmoyle,

Sheri Regnier, Jeanine Margoreeth, Kevin Macintyre, Dave Dykstra, Jim Bailey, Michelle Bedford, Lonnie Hart and Guy Bertrand) are celebrating its 120th

anniversary in 2015.

Newspaper grows from humble beginnings in 1895B Y S H E R I R E G N I E R

Times Staff

The source of prosperity of the

Trail Creek county is, of course, its

magnificent ore bodies, according

the first edition of the Trail Creek

News. “Our interests at present

lie centred in and about the noble

structure that is rising foot by foot

on the brow of the hill overhanging

the beautiful town of Trail and of

its growth and magnitude we now

write,” noted the paper's writer and

editor W.F. Thompson on the inau-

gural front page.

The day was Saturday, Oct. 19,

1895 when Volume No. 1 of The

Trail Creek News was hot off the

presses. Under the headline, “This Means

You! When You Patronize the News

You Help Trail Grow,” Thompson

writes that it is now in order for

every citizen of Trail to subscribe

for the home newspaper, The Trail

Creek News, and “the times are

right for such a movement, the

price is right and if the News of

today is not all right, we will make

it right in future issues.”

The price was said to be “cheap”

at $2 per year, and the News office

would be found open all day long

and far into the night, and future

readers were expected to hand in

their subscription at once, so they

would not miss one issue of the

Trail newspaper. “If you want the

news, you must read the News,”

Thompson proclaimed almost 12

decades ago. While there's no silver or gold

commemoration for more than a

century of news reporting, the Trail

Celebrating 120 years

Look for our next historical spread

in SeptemberMore often than usual, the licence plate on the car in front of me this

summer, in locales as var-ied as Vancouver and Powell River, has been Albertan.

Typically, these cars and trucks have been brand new, top of the line, optioned-out beauties. Nothing second hand or ‘cheaped out’ for our Albertan cous-ins. B.C. folk notice these things, and to a certain degree have come to expect them. Our west-ern provincial neighbours are these kind of people.

T h e y ’ v e always had money for toys and a lifestyle many veteran ‘coasters’ haven’t been able to afford. Many of us know that we too could drive east and tie into some of that frothy oil money, if we chose to. And to be fair, a lot of us have.

This summer, however, there is a sense of change and uncertainty in the air. Our neighbours next door to our Vancouver apartment still have white-and-red Alberta plates on their Porsche SUV, but they have decided to live here. And they are encour-aging their adult children and grandchildren to do the same.

Up coast, I’ve seen a surpris-ing number of young Albertan families slowing down in front of For Sale signs on houses.

Just as $100 oil drew so many Canadians from the have-not provinces to Alberta, so does $45 oil give cause for an exit. I think this time around it’s an exit worth tak-

ing.Obviously, Alberta is a sin-

gle industry resource econ-omy with all the attendant benefits and problems. The benefits are obvious; some of the problems not so much.

Consider how easy it has been to earn professional grade salaries from low-level skills. This fact in itself builds dependency on one economic

sector, argues against pursu-ing advanced education, and rewards intel-lectual compla-cency. These are not winning arguments in a fast changing world.

C o n s i d e r too the broadly held awareness of carbon’s role

in climate change. The com-ing Paris UN Climate Change Conference in December will clinch the reality of needed energy grid change in our col-lective minds and souls. Even the Pope gets it.

So why would any prom-ising and critically thinking young student, especially those in maths and sciences, now pursue a career in oil and gas? Wouldn’t most teenagers and twentysomethings rather work in a small smart tech startup, or for Elon Musk at Tesla, or Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook? Why tie your career dreams to a sunset industry that financial wizards like Mark Carney think is way past the possibility of producing the hydrocarbons on the asset books of multinational energy companies? Why turn yourself into a stranded asset?

While Alberta has been the beneficiary of the fed-

eral government’s worldwide hucksterism of its birthright energy sector, other provinces like B.C. have been getting on with adaptation to the emer-ging realities.

There is a provincial carbon tax (notably a neutral one) on all oil, gas and diesel pur-chases.

Key cities are densify-ing. Urban transit is being upgraded. Citizens are walk-ing and biking to work in lar-ger and larger numbers.

The tech sector has arrived in Vancouver to join movies, year-round tourism, global real estate investment and condo construction as new examples of economic divers-ity. You can sense the com-petitive vitality that numer-ous smaller economic sectors provide the Vancouver work force. And the opportunities.

Contrast this with the pros-pect of hanging on in Alberta, especially for those without meaningful family roots. As someone who “has looked at carbon from both sides now” (thanks Joni), having worked for 30 years in Alberta, and seven in B.C., I think B.C. is firmly on the ‘now’ side of historic trends.

It reminds me of the situa-tion my great uncle Leighton faced when steam irrevocably replaced wind as the propul-sion system for ships. He was the captain of a four-masted tea clipper, the Melanope, and in 1906 he ‘came ashore’ in San Fransisco.

He always said it was the best decision he ever made

T H E C A N A D I A N P R E S SOTTAWA - It’s gut check time,

financial advisers said Monday as stock markets around the world went for a wild ride testing just how much risk investors are really comfortable with.

The S&P/TSX composite index plunged more than 768 points in early trading, then recouped all but 77 points of that before again selling off for a huge loss of 420.93 points or 3.12 per cent to 13,052.74 at the close.

The dive followed a tumble

last week that saw the Toronto market suffer through five con-secutive losing sessions - includ-ing a string of triple-digit losses - that brought the TSX down more than 800 points on the week.

“If you are telling me today that your risk tolerance is not what you thought it was and you’re in the wrong model and you don’t want any down-side losses, then we have some things to chat about,” said Brent Vandermeer, a portfolio manager with HollisWealth.

“This is part of what equity markets have consistently done and will continue to do and we have to endure these downside storms even though we get very fearful and worried it is going to keep going down to zero.”

The S&P/TSX composite index is down about 15 per cent from its high reached last year, while the Dow Jones industrial average is off more than 10 per cent from its high reached earlier this year.

Sadiq Adatia, chief invest-ment officer at Sun Life Global

Investments, said if you aren’t sleeping well at night, worried about your investments, you have too much risk.

“This is a great time to go and ask that question because it gives you a true answer as to what your tolerance for risk really is,” he said.

CIBC noted it expects the recent weakness in stock mar-kets will likely continue into year-end.

“What started as a modest second devaluation of the yuan

has now raised concerns of pos-sible competitive devaluations, slower global economic growth and new fears of deflation,” the bank wrote in a note to clients.

While the drop in recent days looks big, compared with the downturn during the 2008-09 financial crisis, the move remains relatively small.

During the financial crisis, the S&P/TSX composite index dropped more than 7,000 points from its 2008 high before reach-ing the bottom in 2009.

Twenty years ago, almost to the day, Greater Trail hosted arguably the most prestigious and memorable event in its sport-ing history – the Babe Ruth World Series. For the next three issues, Trail Times Sports will take a walk down the base paths of time, and revisit the tournament that ran from Aug. 19-26, 1995; high-lighting its evolution, its players, and those that made the event possible.

Preparation for the 1995 age 16-18 Babe Ruth World Series was a long and challen-

ging process, that couldn’t have been accomplished without an inspired community effort.

The City of Trail along with close to 60 corporate spon-sors boosted the World Series Committee’s budget to $500,000. But it was the thousands of vol-unteers from construction work-ers to scorekeepers, hostesses and bat boys, billet families and ticket sellers that made the Series an unparalleled success.

“It’s the biggest sporting event Trail has ever seen,” said tourna-ment committee director Brian Pipes. “Even when you have the summer or winter games here,

those are big, but not as big as this. As far as attendance and participation, it was huge. ”

The biggest priority was reno-vating Butler Park to bring it into line with Babe Ruth stan-dards and dimensions. Director Dan Ashman brought in Rud Haar, the groundskeeper for Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver, and with the support of residents, Cominco, and local contractors, the field was completed by 1993.

But that was only the start.“Getting the lights was a big

challenge, getting the ball park done was a big challenge, the bleachers was a big one,” said

Pipes.West Kootenay Power along

with local contractors GESCAN and Bryan’s Transfer helped Butler see the light of day, bring-ing a $112,000 lighting project in at a cost of $56,000.

To accommodate the thou-sands of fans, new bleachers were installed along the first and third base lines, and the out-field. With a team of 10 students, led by Cominco carpenter and Local 480 representative Gord Menelaws, the crew added 6,000 more seats to Butler Park and its already 800 capacity.

Kootenay Glacier Kings primed for 55-plus GamesB y J i m B a i l e y

Times Sports EditorThe Kootenay Glacier Kings

hockey teams will join about 3,500 athletes in North Vancouver this week for the 55-plus B.C. Games.

The Glacier Kings will send two teams to the Games this year, the 55-59 and 60-64 age teams, with the more senior team looking to defend the gold medal it won at the 2014 Games in Langley, and the 55-59 team hoping to reclaim the gold they won in 2013.

The 32 players represent the largest contingent from the Zone 6 West Kootenay team made up of athletes from Nelson, Castlegar,

Greater Trail, Salmo, Grand Forks and Christina Lake.

“The teams are looking pretty good . . . but both teams are going down a little short,” said 60-64 player Wayne Florko.

The respective Glacier King squads are a centreman short of a full three lines, but are confident going into the annual event.

“Both teams are pretty strong, but we have some injuries, and some new guys. We are going to be a bit of a different team, but the core, the nucleus, is there on both clubs, so that will be pretty good.”

After winning gold in 2013 at the Games, the 55-plus team went

on to  capture the  gold medal at the 2014 Canada Senior Games in Edmonton last September.

The Glacier Kings will play in a four team round robin before the medal games go on Saturday, the final day of the Games.

Many players on the Kootenay squads played with or against each other in the Western International Hockey League on teams like the Trail Smoke Eaters, Nelson Leafs, Rossland Warriors, and Spokane Flyers adding a unique character that is both competitive and fun on the ice and in the dressing room.

“I think guys that have always played like the competition and

the real steep competition and that’s what makes it fun,” said Florko. “But what makes it even more fun is that a lot of us use to play against each other and now were playing together as a team and that is really neat. Lots of good stories and a lot of good players too.”

After a hot, dry summer, the players looked forward to tak-ing to the ice and getting in a few practices in Nelson and Trail before heading to the Games.

“Once you get a few skates under your belt it gets a lot bet-ter, but the first few were pretty tough. The older you get it takes you just a little bit longer to

respond. But yesterday (Sunday) as a group was definitely our very best skates for everyone.”

The 55-59 Glacier Kings open the Games Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. while the 60-64 Kings play the Vancouver Schooners at 1:30 p.m.

“The key will be playing your system, taking care of your own end, and not giving up odd-man rushes and stuff like that,” said Florko. “You have to play smart, and probably through the course of it, we’ll have to make adjust-menst with one guy short.”

About 100 participants from the West Kootenay will compete in 24 sports and games.

Tuesday, September 8, 2015Kootenay-ColumbiaSchool District #Superintendent’s MessageThe Labour Day weekend in September marks the end of summer for students and staff. September is an exciting time as we begin the school year helping students on their learning journey. We encourage all of our community to be actively involved with your schools. Talk to your child’s teacher and principal and find a way to stay involved and connected. Parental involvement really can make a difference in student achievement.

All schools will be open at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8th for the registration of students new to the district and for any local Kindergarten and Grade One students not previously registered.

Students will report for instruction on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at times noted below. September 8th will be a shortened day for students. Shortening the day will allow students an opportunity to become acquainted with their school, while at the same time enabling teachers to finalize their preparations for Wednesday, September 9th, the first full day of instruction. Kindergarten students will have gradual entry over the first two weeks so please contact your school for those times or visit the district website at www.sd20.bc.ca.

To our existing students and families welcome back! To our new students and families, whether you are just starting kindergarten or moved here over the summer, a special warm welcome to your new school and district.

Times sTaffThe Kamloops Sun

Devils captured bronze at Baseball Canada’s 2015 Canadian Senior Men’s National Championship in Chatham, N.B. on Sunday.

Kamloops defeated Nova Scotia 5-1 in the bronze medal final on Sunday. With the score tied 0-0 and two out in the fifth inning, a Scott Nevison hit, and a Brendan Reid walk

would bring up Erik Herbranson. A double steal would put both runners in scoring pos-ition and Herbranson would deliver a two-stike single to left field to score both runners and put the Sun Devils up 2-0.

New Brunswick would get one back in the sixth but a three-run inning sparked by a Dave Hole home run would seal the deal for the Devils.

Jake Hein got the win for Kamloops, giving up two hits and two walks, while striking out one. Hole went  2-for-3 with a solo homer and one RBI. Scott Nevison was also 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while Luc Simpson stroked a double and an RBI.

Canada lost to Quebec 1-0 in the semifinal match, before Ontario beat Quebec 4-1 in the final.

FROM PAGE 9They added a press box, installed

a new scoreboard, and rewired the whole system.

“We got the lights done plus we rebuilt the whole scoreboard and put a new electronic line out there,” said Smyth, whose brother Roy did much of the electrical work. “We needed a big place for the press box for the announcers and that so we took the top of Butler Park stadium, and rebuilt that into a facility so all the lines had to go back up into there – it was a huge undertaking.”

But it was well worth the effort. With vendors lined up along the street, and 50-50 ticket sales top-ping $5,000 a draw, and the best young players in the world taking to the field, the resulting influx of crowds was unprecedented at a Babe Ruth World Series. In the first

two days over 24,000 people went through the gate, with crowds of over 6,000 spilling in for the Trail Jays’ matches. In the end, 113,364 fans attended, setting the record for Babe Ruth 16-18 World Series that still stands, and smashing the previ-ous record of 78,000.

“Despite some great opening action, it was the organization and the pristine condition of Butler Park that had fans enthralled,” wrote Times sports editor Guy Bertrand at the time.

“It’s a dream come true,” com-mittee director Eleanor Gattafoni-Robinson told Bertrand. “After all this time, it’s an unbelievable feeling to see what we’re seeing here.”

Trail’s Babe Ruth World Series committee couldn’t have been more dedicated and successful, for it was the response of the community that made the difference to visiting teams and dignitaries.

Bill Smith, chairman of the board for Babe Ruth League Inc., had met with Ashman and Gattafoni-Robinson at the 2014 Babe Ruth World Series in Wharton, Tex., and said he was skeptical when the Trail representatives told him what was in store.

“I thought they were putting the Chamber of Commerce sale on me,” Smith told the Times. “But it’s more than surpassed that. It’s people who make the World Series and these in Trail are the greatest in the world.”

Record turnout highlights success

Some of Trail’s finest young residents volunteered to act as hostesses and bat boys, while Butler was given a makeover and a new scoreboard, below.

T H E C A N A D I A N P R E S STORONTO - Steven Sabados won’t be returning

to the CBC-TV show “Steven and Chris” after the death of his husband/co-host Chris Hyndman.

In a statement on the show’s Facebook page, Sabados says “it’s impossible” for him to imagine continuing the daytime lifestyles series without Hyndman.

He adds the CBC understands and supports his decision and he hopes viewers can as well.

CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson says the public broadcaster “will be exploring new options” for its daytime schedule over the next few months.

Hyndman died earlier this month at age 49.In the Facebook message, Sabados says it’s

been “an incredibly difficult time” and he thanks those who’ve supported him over the past few weeks.

T H E C A N A D I A N P R E S STORONTO - Shomi is ready to show the coun-

try what it’s all about. The streaming video platform from Rogers

same price as Netflix, which has been the domin-ant subscription video service in Canada since it launched here in 2010.

CraveTV, a rival streaming service from Bell Media, is slated to open up to all Canadians on Jan. 1.

It’s currently only offered to subscribers of certain television providers, including Bell, Eastlink and Telus.

Dear Annie: My heart is breaking for my sister. She has been married to the same man for more than 30 years and he has never been kind or respectful toward her. They have two married sons and a grandchild with health problems. My sister loves that grandchild more than life itself, but she rarely gets to see him. Worse, her sons treat her ter-ribly and I have no idea why. The younger son takes advantage of her, and the oldest acts as though his parents are beneath him.

I have several siblings and although none of us is perfect, we have all tried our best to be good parents. My sister has recently developed medical problems, but she is so depressed about her life that she doesn’t care about her own health.

I am worried about her. She deserves love and respect and has sacrificed herself for the men in her life. Should I write a letter to my nephews and open their eyes? -- Big Sister

Dear Sister: If your brother-in-law has treated his wife disrespect-fully their entire mar-ried life and she has tolerated it, then her sons will treat her simi-larly. That is the pat-tern they grew up with and they see nothing wrong with it. Your sis-ter needs to assert her-self and demand more acceptable behavior, but we suspect she doesn’t know how.

If you want to write letters to your nephews, by all means do so, but be aware that it might not help and could estrange them from you. Can you enlist the help of your nephew’s wives? Men who treat their mothers disrespectfully often repeat the pattern with their wives. We also hope you will offer to go with your sister for counseling, not only so she can learn to stop put-ting up with such disrespect, but to help her move forward and take

control of her life and her health.Dear Annie: Eleven years ago,

when my father passed away, the funeral home gave my mother an American flag, since Dad was a veteran of WWII. As per his wishes, there was no funeral and my father was cremated. This flag was never used and my mother put it away in a closet. Now my mother is in a nursing facility

and I have the flag. Annie, we already have a smaller

flag that hangs by our front door. Dad’s flag has no sentimental value for me, but I have no idea who I can pass it on to or what else can be done with it. I can’t just throw it away. Do you have any suggestions? -- Daughter of a Vet in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Dear Daughter: Are there niec-es, nephews or grandchildren who might like to have this flag? Please

ask around. Here are some other ideas: Contact your local histori-cal society to see whether they will accept this item, perhaps along with your father’s other war memo-rabilia if there is any. Also offer it to nearby schools, the Boy Scouts or

Girl Scouts, your local fire depart-ment and the VFW to see whether they are interested. Finally, please contact the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs (cem.va.gov) to donate the flag for use in the National Cemetery.
