Rideshare Site Up And RunningRoad transportation is responsible for 46% of the aver-
age Canadian’s greenhouse gas emissions. Th e average yearly cost of operating a vehicle can be as high as $8,600 a year or $23 a day. Traveling together and sharing the movement of goods not only saves money and is more en-vironmentally sound, but can help your neighbours and possibly connect you with new friends.
Th e Kootenay Rideshare has become a community in-stitution for informal carpools and one-time trips. Th e program is administered by the West Kootenay EcoSo-ciety as a means to reduce greenhouse gasses and single passenger vehicle trips. With CBT Community Initiatives grants from New Denver and Silverton, the North Slocan’s Healthy Community Society teamed up with the West
Kootenay EcoSociety to enhance the Kootenay Rideshare website. Th e improvements have made the site more user friendly for everyone, and it has some specifi c elements to help users who reside outside of Nelson. New features include the transport of goods, maps, and a fi lter to elim-inate inapplicable rides. It is no longer necessary to read through the long list of people going everywhere.
“Th ese improvements will make the site easier to use, and I hope they will help people fi nd rides all over the region and the province,” said EcoSociety’s David Reid. “We are hoping for another round of improvements to improve access on the fl y for smart phone users, and to promote the site so it sees even more use.” Th e Nelson city council will consider a Community Initiatives Program grant for the Rideshare site in April. To use the site, visit www.kootenayrideshare.com.

Top Chef ShowdownSelkirk College Hospitality and Tourism students invit-
ed the public into Mary Hall recently to sample a variety of taste delights from around the world, and then asked them to vote on whose food they thought was the best – as part of Selkirk’s 2012 Top Chef competition.
“Top Chef is an annual collaboration between the Re-sort and Hotel Management Program and the First Year Cook Training Program that allows us to have our stu-dents get a real-life experience,” explains Harry Pringle, instructor in Selkirk College’s Resort and Hotel Manage-ment Program.
“Th e culinary students develop and try to perfect their four dishes and then have to present them to the public and get feedback on their product. Th e Resort and Hotel Management students get the opportunity to coordin-ate, promote and then run a major event. Th ey set the budget, undertake marketing activities and then defi ne the tasks required to ensure a successful event.”
And the public packed the house at Mary Hall, eager to partake in the deliciousness off ered up by the groups of student chefs, which included Mediterranean, Korean, Middle Eastern and French cuisine and featured dishes such as: roasted vegetable stack with pesto goat cheese and balsamic vinegar on a bamboo spear; braised short rib kalbi lettuce cups with gojuchang sauce, yam and pea-nut purée soup with ginger and pineapple, and Belgian chocolate truffl e with brie. Each group also off ered up a drink to accompany their food, served in fi ne style by Re-sort and Hotel Management students.
Aft er sampling everything, those in attendance were asked to vote anonymously for their favourites in the categories of Best Team, Best Bite, Best Dessert and Best Presentation.
Team Mediterranean (Mike Atsalakis, Jackson Franch-etto, Anja Blake and Deon Asencio) was clearly the crowd favourite, bringing home shiny trophies in three of the four categories, including: Best Overall, Best Presenta-tion, and Best Bite for their tart of lemon grilled sea bass, prawn and scallops in garlic aioli with fennel salad. Team Oasis (Dana Dickinson Sampson, Bemba Avirmed, Sean Hamilton and Alan Wilson) won Best Dessert for their warm sticky date pudding with coconut ice cream, gar-nished with bittersweet caramel. When it was all said and done, Pringle felt the event was a success.
“Th e excitement and hard work the students put into Top Chef was refl ected in the fi ne products they pro-duced,” he said. “I feel this year’s event was a great success and a successful one for the students.”
Culinary students who participated in Top Chef also felt good about their experience. “Top Chef was a great hands-on experience,” said Deon Asencio. “To do some-thing like that was totally amazing. It was an awesome ex-perience and I also learned a lot from it.”
“It was really cool,” added Dana Dickinson-Sampson. “You see how all of your eff orts are translated into the real world. A lot of people I don’t know chatted with me about what I’d done and how they appreciated that and came up to me aft er and made comments. Th at was really nice.”

For the fourth consecutive year, FortisBC sponsored the Earth Hour Challenge, encouraging residents from 17 communities to make a pledge to switch off all non-essen-tial lighting, appliances and electronics.
“We credit the success of this year’s Earth Hour Chal-lenge to the tremendous leadership shown by the partici-pating communities and non-profi t organizations,” said

Th e community with the highest per capita participa-tion for this year’s challenge is the Village of Salmo. By col-lecting the most pledges, per capita, Salmo earns bragging rights and a $5,000 energy upgrade for the Salmo Public Library, their designated 2012 non-profi t recipient.

Keep Your Tax Dollars From Funding War
Over 1.5 trillion dollars is spent each year by governments worldwide on militaries and war. If you want to work for peace and are interested in learning how to keep your tax dollars from supporting war, attend the Peace Café hosted by Selkirk College’s Mir Centre for Peace and Conscience Canada at Selkirk College’s Castlegar campus on Th ursday, April 19.
Event organizer, Anna Kirkpatrick says people have been approaching Conscience Canada wanting to learn more about the con-cept since BC southern interior NDP MP Alex Atamanenko introduced his private members Bill C-363 – an act respecting conscientious objection to the use of taxes for military pur-poses – to parliament late last year.
Kirkpatrick says she is personally op-posed to having her hard-earned dollars used to fund the military. “I want to dedi-cate my money and my time to creative, constructive, peaceful solutions,” Kirkpat-rick notes. “I cannot, in good conscience, allow my tax dollars to fund the military.”
Mir Centre for Peace Chair, Randy Jan-zen adds that the face of war has changed over the years and the secret to resisting it now lies in the fi nancing of it.
“A few generations ago they conscripted our young men,” Janzen says. “War has changed. Now they need our money more than our young people. So the notion of conscientious objection has changed. If we don’t believe in war to solve our problems, we need to stop contributing fi nancially. Instead we need to redirect our money to fund practices and research that utilize nonviolent strategies.”
“Th e timing of this peace café coincides with the upcoming deadline to fi le our in-come tax,” Janzen added. At the event Mr. Atamanenko will speak about his bill, fol-lowed by two short documentaries: Death and Taxes, and Conscience Canada’s own short fi lm, Work for Peace, Stop Paying for War. Th e evening will fi nish with an op-portunity for questions and discussion.
Th e Peace Café starts at 7 pm, with ad-mission by donation. Refreshments will be served. To learn more about Selkirk Col-lege’s Mir Centre for Peace, visit selkirk.ca/research/mir-centre-for-peace/.

HfHWK accepting Applications Th e West Kootenay Affi liate of Habitat for Humanity
(HfHWK) started off in 1996 with a couple of Nelson locals who wanted to build Habitat homes for low income families. It took about two years to get organized, obtain charitable status and become an offi cial affi liation of Habitat for Hu-manity. Many volunteers were gathered, and by July of 2000 the fi rst home was ready for the selected family to move in. Since the beginnings, nearly thirteen years ago, Habitat for Humanity West Kootenay has built a total of three homes in the Nelson area, including one duplex. Th rough these homes, a total of four families were given a hand up. HfHWK is nowaccepting new family applications for a 12 year old 3 bed-room duplex in Nelson uphill between Sunday, April 1 to Tuesday, May 1 2012. Applications are available at: www.habitatwk.ca, Share at 612 Lakeside, Nelson Community Services at 518 Lake Street or RHC Insurance at 601 Baker. For more information email: [email protected], mailing address: 809 - 622 Front Street, Nelson, BC V1L 4B7 or call 250-399-4561. Your down payment is 500 volunteer hoursand your interest free mortgage including land tax is lim-ited to 30% of your gross income.

Looking For Volunteers And Overdue Equipment
Th ose who experience a sudden illness or accident are oft en left stunned by how quickly their lives have changed. A car accident, a sudden slip, or a heart attack can leave a person helpless in a home built for the able-bodied. For the elderly, aft er hip or knee surgery, a broken bone, or the onset of de-bilitating disease, everyday tasks can become unmanageable.
Th e Canadian Red Cross, Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) is a volunteer-driven, community-based program that provides essential medical equip-ment to individuals on a “by do-nation” basis. Making this med-ical equipment available to the public has many positive impacts in the community. First of all, ac-cess to this equipment supports the independence of clients (pri-marily seniors), enabling them to remain an active part of their community, and thereby increas-ing their health and well-being. Secondly, public access to this service reduces long term facil-ity placements, facilitates hospital discharges, and supports people who wish to spend their fi nal days in the comfort of their own home.
People in the community can only access this service if there is a volunteer available to help them. Th ree hours a week can make a world of diff erence to someone in your community. We have various positions available; from client support to equipment maintenance and depot deliv-eries, full training and support is provided.
Volunteer support is critical in order to continue providing this essential service to those who need it and so is having equipment available to loan out. Many depot locations are short of equipment and are fi nding they are having to put people on a waitlist because of equipment not being returned and not having the inventory available for the next person.
Spring cleaning? Make your fi rst priority to return any equipment that you may have borrowed, there are many people on a wait list who need to borrow this equipment as part of their recovery.
For more info, please contact the Castlegar Canadian Red Cross offi ce located at 1250 26th, Street – in the old Kinnaird Middle School; at 250-365-3911 or 1-800-761-0099 ext 102 to ask for more information on how to become a volunteer or for nearest location to drop off your loaned equipment.

In total, over 6000 pledges to participate were registered with FortisBC, a record-setting number that is more than triple from last year. Th is level of engagement resulted in a 1.7 per cent drop in electricity consumption, or 5.48 megawatts during Earth Hour, that’s equal to switching off approximate-ly 90,000 60W incandes-cent light bulbs and rep-resents an increase of 1.9 megawatts or 30,000 light bulbs over last year.
Earth Hour is just one of the many initiatives that FortisBC supports to en-courage customers to save energy. To learn more visit fortisbc.com or call 1-866-436-7847.

Business Opportunities
KCR Presents.....An evening with David Barsamian on Saturday, April
14, 7:30 pm at the Self Design Commons (402 Stanley Street) in Nelson.
David Barsamian is the founder and director of Al-ternative Radio, the independent weekly audio series based in Boulder, Colorado, and has helped change the media landscape in North America. Alternative Radio is an internationally syndicated program carried by 125 radio stations, which has aired on Kootenay Co-op Radio since the station’s inception in 2000, and was the model for KCR’s long-running program Canadian Voices.
David Barsamian will speak on Uprisings: Kashmir to Cairo to Wall Street.
He has interviewed and authored books with Noam Chomsky, Arundhati Roy, Howard Zinn, Eqbal Ahmad, Tariq Ali, and Edward Said. His best-selling books with Chomsky have been translated into many languages.
Barsamian, who had visited India many times in the last 40 years reporting on conditions, learning Urdu and play-ing sitar, was deported on arrival in New Delhi on Sep-tember 23, 2011 and prevented from carrying out sched-uled interviews in regard to the thousands of recently discovered unmarked graves in Kashmir.
Tickets are $10 for Kootenay Co-op Radio members, and $12 for non-members, and are available at Otter Books and Kootenay Co-op Radio in Nelson. Seating at the venue is limited, so advance purchase is recom-mended. All proceeds go to Kootenay Co-op Radio.

Oreo is a velvety black and white Rex cross who is a spayed 5 year old bunny.
She was originally a little girl’s pet, perhaps
bought as a gift. But sadly, as the girl grew Oreo’s novelty wore off , with her cage eventually being moved to their garage. Fast forward to now, and
Oreo’s family no longer wanted to care for her, so she was surrendered. Her story really shows
how important it is for any family wanting a rabbit for their child to realize that the parents most likely will become that rabbit’s guardian. They will be the ones to care for that animal for its whole life (up to 12 years), not just a few years when the child still thinks the animal is “cool”.
Currently, Oreo is using a litter box and seems to enjoy treats and time out of her kennel. We hope that her new home gives her more time out of her cage, and more time with her new human caregivers, helping her to be more
confi dent in regards to people.
She is fi ne around cats, but is scared of dogs, which is reasonable for her, since she is a prey animal, and dogs appear to her as predators.
Eat for PeteI would also like to
remind everyone that the next “Eat for Pete” is being held at Gypsy at Red in Rossland. Tickets for the 5 course vegetarian meal plus a glass of wine are $50 and can be purchased at Gypsy or at Tails Pet Supplies in Rossland. $20 from each ticket will be donated to the Trail Regional BCSPCA!

Selkirk Trio At Th e Kootenay GalleryTh e Selkirk Trio, Nicola Everton, Jeff Faragher and
Sue Gould will be performing for the Kootenay Gallery’s TD Bank Sunday Concert Series at the Castlegar United Church on Sunday, April 15.
On tour throughout the East and West Kootenay, the Kootenay based Selkirk Trio features a program high-lighting the rich repertoire for clarinet, cello and piano.
With pianist Sue Gould living in Golden, cellist Jeff Faragher in Nelson and clarinetist Nicola Everton hailing from Rossland, fi nding a middle ground for rehearsals was the biggest challenge. Th e three professional musi-cians are used to packing an intense punch with their rehearsals and concert tour which will cover 15 concerts in seven days, including ten concerts for the Health Arts Society in extended care facilities throughout the region.
All three musicians are active chamber and orchestral musicians in BC and Alberta. Everton was a member of the Vancouver Symphony for over 20 years and now joins principal cellist, Jeff Faragher in the Kootenay Symphony. Susan Gould originates in Calgary, Alberta and has been performing as a pianist since her debut with the Mount Royal College orchestra at the age of eleven. Outside of their busy performance schedule, music education is a passion for the trio. Jeff directs the Obligato string pro-gram in Nelson, Sue the Young Voices Children’s Choir in Golden while Nicola enjoys teaching privately, both adults and youth.
Th e varied program which takes the listener on a music-al journey includes standard classics by Beethoven and Bruch, complex rhythms of Balkan composer Tajcevic, Godfather composer Nino Rota’s trio as well as jazz in-spired works by Cuban composer Paquito D’Rivera and Cole Porter.
Th is concert will take place at the Castlegar United Church on April 15 at 1:30 pm. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for Kootenay Gallery members.

Garden WorkshopYou can’t get much closer to the earth on Earth Day
than by studying mycorrhizal fungi. Everyone is welcome to this ‘by donation’ event, Enlivening your Relationship with Mushrooms, hosted by Lardeau Valley Seed Savers on April 22, 1 pm to 3 pm at the Lardeau Valley Hall. Features local mycologist, Peter McAlister, presenting a slideshow and discussion of his successes and failures with wild and domesticated species: culinary, medicinal and garden mushrooms, identifi cation of our local wild species in the Kootenays, and particular emphases on the benefi ts of mycorrhizal fungi in the garden.
Th is workshop is the last in the winter series presented by LVSS. We’ve learned how to enhance our gardens through nutrient recycling and pollination. Now join avid gardeners to learn how mushrooms help, or just come to identify the species out there. At each of our workshop we’ve taken away practical ideas and materials. We may take some fungus from this one.
