3. Which is your prefered option?

Option 3 Introduce a banned left turn

into Macfarlane Road for vehicles travelling north along Hopgood Street.

Additional comments (optional)

Residents of Macfarlane Road and Hopgood Street have indicated their concern about the number of vehicles passing through Macfarlane Road via Uxbridge Road and Wood Lane in order to find a parking space, contributing to congestion and obstructions.Some residents have indicated that they would like Macfarlane Road to be considered for closures to traffic at one entrance.

There are two notable business premises on Macfarlane Road, each requiring access for their delivery van and customers. Refuse vehicles also regularly require access, and Emergency vehicles must also be given due consideration as part of any proposed solution as well as residents’ delivery vans and BBC vehicles.

The Council has set out 3 proposals in this document (see overleaf). Please note the potential impacts of each option before voting and adding feedback. Please return the attached pre-paid form or complete the online consultation by visiting www.lbhf.gov.uk/macfarlaneroad by 20th July 2012.

Introducing a point closure at the northern end of Macfarlane Road was previously considered. However, this would cause increased congestion with large vehicles, such as refuse trucks and delivery/removal vans having to turn around and even more parking spaces would need to be removed to accommodate this option as there is no turning space available. Additionally, there are servicing requirements for the BBC’s technical equipment and vehicles travelling to the mechanics business would cause less congestion with the northern section being maintained as a two-way.

Advantages• More ease of movement for vehicles than with a

road closure;• No loss in parking spaces.

The map overleaf indicates a point closure on Macfarlane Road. This option will require the removal of three permit holders only bays in order to facilitate ease of access for refuse vehicles and emergency service vehicles and to allow for the gate to open. A refuse truck or delivery van visiting any property on the south-western corner of Macfarlane Road would turn around with difficulty which itself would cause congestion. Please see drawing overleaf for proposals.

Advantages• It would prevent vehicular traffic entering

Hopgood Street from cutting through Macfarlane Road to access Wood Lane.

Potential risks and disadvantages• It would not stop traffic from accessing Wood

Lane through Hopgood Street;• Should anyone park illegally on the yellow lines

adjoining the point closure larger vehicles might not be able to turn around at all;

• Large vehicles will find it difficult to turn around which could cause congestion;

• Three permit holder only parking spaces may be lost as a result of a point closure.

• A point closure may be likely to increase the perception of the generation of traffic because in order to enter and leave Macfarlane Road more vehicles will need to pass by a greater number of properties and back again.

Disadvantages• The traffic flow will remain the same.

INTRODUCTION QUESTIONNAIRE

Traffic travelling north on Hopgood Street would be banned from turning left into Macfarlane Road as indicated overleaf.

Advantages• It may reduce the volume of traffic cutting

through from Hopgood Street and Macfarlane Road to access Wood Lane;

• It would cost less than the introduction of a point closure;

• There would be no loss of permit holder parking spaces.

OPTION ONE MAINTAIN THE CURRENT ARRANGEMENTS

OPTION TWO PERMANENT POINT CLOSURE

OPTION THREE BANNED LEFT TURN INTO MACFARLANE ROAD

Potential risks and disadvantages:• Residents and businesses in Macfarlane Road

would also have to adhere to the banned left turn and need to make a longer journey to reach their property;

• Motorists do not always adhere to banned turns along smaller stretches of residential roads.
