as well as school expectations. Thank you for sharing the responsibility of your child’s education with us. We look
forward to an exciting and activity-filled year working with you and your child. Together we can create leaders of the
future.
Traditional Learning Centre Program “To Think, To Value, To Know”
The Traditional Learning Centre program uses teacher-directed instruction and character education to
foster reflective thinking, continuous learning and responsible citizenship. It is a celebration of cultural
diversity and commonly held values. The virtues-oriented school environment prepares students to meet
the moral, technological and global challenges of the 21st century.
Guiding Principles:
Instruction is direct, sequential and enriched, built on the concept of a classical liberal arts
education.
Character education is intentionally taught in every class. A positive school climate and discipline
policy center on expected character values. Development of moral intelligence is the expected outcome.
Diversity is celebrated and common values are articulated in a virtues oriented environment that
encourages responsible citizenship and collaboration.
Parents and students commit to ALL program components while in the TLC program.

LE ROI DANIELS SCHOOL CULTURE
Character Education is a cornerstone of the TLC program. At Le Roi Daniels School, we demonstrate the
three pillars of respect – respect for self, respect for others and respect for the environment. We also
study numerous virtues throughout the year and participate in service projects to further our
understanding of the virtues.
The goal at Le Roi Daniels is to help children develop appropriate social skills and demonstrate Respect
for self, Respect for others and Respect for our environment.
Respect for self:
Each student will strive for academic excellence.
Students and parents recognize that diligence, effort and scholastic achievement generate self-
esteem.
Students understand that they must abide by the school's code of conduct and that they are the
main contributor to the school climate and culture.
Respect for others:
This comprises respect for human and property rights of others, respect for roles or legitimate
authority in home, community, country and respect for the contributions of those more or less
capable than oneself in given areas.
Students will contribute to an orderly, disciplined and secure school environment based on clear
ethical principles.
Respect for the environment:
Students are expected to care for and nurture the school environment, the extended environment
and the resources made available to them.
We also recognize the cultural celebrations of many different cultures. Some of the celebrations
recognized are : Navratri, Eid, Ramadan, Diwali, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, Lunar New Year,
Valentine’s, and Easter. If you have a celebration that you would like us to share, please send a note with
your child explaining what the celebration is and how it is celebrated, well in advance of the celebration.

Students attending the Traditional Learning Center are required to dress in uniforms at all times unless

Parents will be notified via a note in the agenda or a formal letter if your child attends school in clothing
that does not meet the TLC uniform requirements and parents may be required to bring the appropriate
clothing to the school that day. There may be additional consequences for students who repeatedly fail to
wear the required uniform.
Casual days are days when uniforms are not required. On these days students have the option to wear
casual (non-uniform) clothes to school. T-shirts or other clothing with rude or questionable slogans or
pictures, skimpy clothing such as bathing suits, T-string tops, tube tops, belly tops and very short shorts

days may occasionally be identified as non-uniform days, so please check the monthly calendar in the
newsletter.
Footwear: Students in the TLC program are required to have TWO pairs of shoes – one pair of indoor
running shoes and one pair of black dress shoes, as required as part of the TLC uniform. As snow, dirt and
mud in our hallways and classrooms creates a safety hazard, we ask that outdoor footwear be removed at
the students’ entrance. Both pairs of shoes should be kept at school. Please purchase gym shoes that have
non-marking soles. Platform shoes, roller shoes, flip-flops, etc. are not acceptable for safety reasons.

HOMEWORK
Regular homework is a requirement in the TLC program.
Parents are encouraged to discuss the child’s daily activities at school and to look over
worksheets, books or assignments sent home.
Students are ultimately responsible for completing their homework.
Students should have a specific location and time to complete homework so that it becomes a
routine activity.
Students apply acquired learning strategies from teacher-directed instruction to independent
work. Examples and step-by-step written instructions assist parents and students in
understanding the expectations of the assignment. Breaking down the work into small pieces
maximizes success and reduces confusion.
Homework is designed to reinforce skills and concepts from classroom instruction and provide the
necessary rehearsal needed to master the skill and build self-confidence.
Parents should assist their children in accessing homework. Please notify the teacher if support
accessing homework is required. Students will receive a letter at the start of the year outlining
the process for accessing homework.
Parents should monitor, mark and sign homework for accuracy and completion. It is better for
your child to receive immediate assistance and correction.
Parents should communicate through the student communication book if there is a concern
regarding homework.
There are 3 levels of homework for each grade and teachers will inform you of your child’s
expected homework level to best meet their learning needs.
Homework Length Guidelines:
Kindergarten through Grade 3 - 15 minutes per night
ALL students should also be doing nightly reading above their hometime
(**This time is approximate. Depending on the pace that your child works, their homework may take more or less time to complete**)
I have read and understand the Homework policy. _______________ ________________

COMMUNICATING WITH THE SCHOOL
Communication between the school and home is essential for student success. Teachers can be contacted
by email, communication book, and voice mail. Students will write in their communication book all
important information, upcoming events and homework assignments. Parents are asked to look for
messages each night and assist students in returning it the following morning. Teachers check the
communication book on a regular basis and will write notes, when required, to the parents. We encourage
all parents to use the communication book to share any minor concerns or questions to the teacher. When
an issue is more serious in nature, we ask that the parent refrain from using the communication book and
make contact directly with the teacher. Telephone calls will not be forwarded to teachers or students
during class time as this interferes with student learning. Please leave important messages with the
secretary who will pass them on during breaks or to the teacher’s voicemail. All other school information
will be posted on the school website (www.cbe.ab.ca/b320) in the form of electronic newsletters and by
monthly emails sent to parents’ email.
Your child’s teacher is always your first point of contact. To contact the teacher directly please
provide a note in the student agenda, phone, or email. If necessary, the teacher will involve school
administration should the concern or problem require. When sending emails, please be mindful that
teachers may not check their email during the day so please allow 24 hours for a response. Teachers will
not respond to emails after 5pm as we want to respect their time with their families. If your email is of
an urgent nature, please call the school office for help.
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT The Calgary Board of Education is committed to providing students and staff with a welcoming, caring,
respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. With
this in mind, the CBE is creating a system-wide Student Code of Conduct (Administrative Regulation
6005) with input from students, parents and CBE employees. This new code of conduct was applied to all
CBE schools beginning in the 2016/17 school year, individual schools will no longer have their own codes of
conduct. All CBE students are expected to abide by the new system regulation, which will be posted to our
Administrative Regulation page
http://www.cbe.ab.ca/about-us/policies-and-regulations/Pages/Administrative-Regulations.aspx.
I have read and understand the Communication and School Code of Conduct Expectations.

SCHOOL PROCEDURES AND INFORMATION
Absences
All students are expected to be punctual and attend school each day.
If your child is going to be absent or late from school please phone our Attendance line at 403.777.6420 and select OPTION #1. If we do not receive your call and your child is not in class, we
will attempt to contact a parent. Students leaving the school for appointments or due to illness must sign
out through the office. Requests for early dismissal should be written in the student communication book
and students will be sent to the office at the requested time.
EXTENDED ABSENCES are strongly discouraged as they significantly impact student achievement.
Please contact school administration well in advance of considering an extended leave (5 or more days).
Emergency Contact Information
Le Roi Daniels School maintains an information file for each student. This file is updated early in each
school year. This information is used in order to help us deal quickly and efficiently with any emergencies
that occur with your child. It is critical that parents keep the school informed of any changes
regarding telephone numbers, names of contacts, caregivers, etc.
Emergency School Closures
In case of the need to evacuate our school, our relocation site is at Fairview School. Staff will accompany
all children to Fairview School across the parking lot where they will await pick-up by parents. Every
effort will be made to contact parents through School Messenger with the telephone numbers and
contacts provided by parents.
On stormy days, the radio or television will provide information about whether buses are running or if the
school is closed. Please listen for public announcements about school closures and availability of bus
transportation. Please ensure that your child has a safety plan should the school bus not arrive to pick
them up. This is especially important if a family member is not at home after your child leaves to catch
their bus.
Emergency Procedures
The school will be using SCHOOL MESSENGER to contact parents in school wide emergency situations.
By doing so, all parents will be informed of the nature of the emergency, the school’s action plan to deal
with the situation and present location of all students.
Fire Drills and Lockdowns
Students are taught fire drill and lockdown procedures in their classes and these are practiced
throughout the school year. Fire drills are conducted six times throughout the year. In the event there
is a need to evacuate, our relocation designation is Fairview School or Lord Beaverbrook, if necessary.
Assemblies
We hold frequent whole school assemblies, which are outlined in our monthly calendars. Parents are
welcome and encouraged to attend our assemblies.
Field Trips
Field trips are planned to enhance the instructional program by providing opportunities for learning that
cannot be replicated in the classroom. A letter will be sent home for each trip to outline the details
regarding departure and arrival times, purposes, curricular relevance, location and costs. All students are
expected to participate in these learning activities unless parents have a serious objection for the
activity, a health concern exists or a student is under disciplinary consequences. It is expected students
will represent our school with pride by demonstrating responsible and mature behavior in the community.
11
Unless otherwise indicated, students are expected to wear FORMAL UNIFORMS on all field trips. No
child will be denied access to off-site activities because of inability to pay; parents are asked to contact
the principal if this is the case. Field trip expenses are calculated on the entire group attending and the
school is unable to modify pricing if students do not participate. Off-Site Activity fees are non-
refundable.
Supervision
School Supervision by staff will begin 15 minutes before school starts. Please ensure students do not
arrive prior to the beginning of supervision. Supervision during recess and noon hour is provided by an
adequate number of staff members at all times.
Technology
The Calgary Board of Education is committed to helping its students thrive in the 21st century and has a
Learner Accessible Wireless Network (LAWN) in all schools. This wireless student network allows
students to use their personal devices to connect with the internet at school. The use of personal
devices by students with the guidance of parents, teachers and school staff will further assist in
addressing individual student preferences. The wireless network provides a more flexible delivery of
resources, and increased opportunities for student choice and differentiation. Digital citizenship is an
emphasis on both safety and ethical behavior in the use of all digital technologies. Students will
understand how to manage personal information, be well-informed, critical consumers of internet
information, and further develop their ability to recognize and deal with online hazards. Be assured that
the content filtering that is normally used to filter inappropriate materials on the school’s internal
network will also be applied to the open access network. As with any personal belonging a student brings
to school, the school cannot be responsible for electronic devices that are lost, stolen or damaged. For
more information, visit the CBE website at http://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/technology-for-
learning/Pages/Digital-Citizenship.aspx . If students bring personal devices into our school, they are
expected to follow our Acceptable Use Policy which positively describes the ways in which we would like
to see Le Roi Daniels students using digital devices and social media for learning. The Digital Citizenship
document is included within these pages and is there for you to discuss with your child and sign to
indicate your agreement and understanding.
School Safety
To ensure a safe learning environment we must take considerable measures to keep our building secure.
We remind parents and visitors the following procedures:
All exterior doors are locked; therefore, all visitors to our school are to enter and exit through the
main school front entrance doors. It is also important that all visitors must check in at the main
office, sign the visitor book and wear an identification card.
The school is responsible for the safety of all students during the school day. Therefore, all students
are to remain on the school grounds during the school day with the exception of students going home
for lunch or when accompanying parents to appointments. Please remember to use the Sign-In/Out
Book located at the office when dropping off/picking up your child/ren for appointments, etc.
All parents waiting for students after school should wait outside near the flag pole or previously
designated location, not inside the front foyer or near the classrooms.
Volunteers/Visitors are to check in at the office and receive an identification card so that students
can identify the adults in the building.
When dropping/picking up students please do not drop off/pick up students in the parking lots. Also,
be mindful of your and your child’s safety when crossing the road. Please do not cross in the middle of
a road or between buses.
12
Injuries at School
Should your child be injured at school the following procedures will be followed:
A school staff member will take action to ensure the safety for the student, administer minor first aid if
required and contact the office. If required, the parent or guardian will be telephoned and apprised of
the situation and in consultation with the parents decide if the child needs to go home. If we are unable
to contact the parent/guardian or emergency contact person, an administrator will decide if emergency
treatment is necessary. If emergency treatment appears to be necessary, the child will be transported
to a hospital and the parents/guardian will be advised as soon as possible. In case of emergency, it is
essential that the office has the most up-to-date contact information for parents and other
contacts. Should a cell phone # or email address change, please contact the office as soon as
possible.
Medication
A Medication Release Form is required for all students who must take medication during the school day.
It is mandatory that the parent complete this form before any medication may be administered. Please
request a form from the school office. All medications are disposed of by the office if the expiry date
has passed. Medication left on June 30th will also be disposed of. Parent should pick up any medication in
the office on the last day of school. Medication no longer required should also be picked up. **Please do
not send your child with any medication in their lunch bag or backpack without the appropriate
notification to the school staff.**
Severe Allergies
A SEVERE ALLERGY ALERT FORM must be completed if your child has any dangerous, life-threating
allergies. The information on the form must be reviewed annually or sooner if your child’s conditions
changes.
Nuts
Our school is a “Nut Aware” school as we have students with severe allergies. Oil from nuts can
accidentally be transferred form one person to the next. We ask your consideration in looking for nut
free products for your child’s lunch at school.
Health Nurse
The community health nurse visits the school periodically to do routine checks, screening and participate
in classroom programs. Parental permission is required prior to having the nurse provide direct services
to your child. If you have any health related questions or concerns, please contact our school health nurse
at: (403)944-7180.
Snack Policy
As part of the CBE nutrition regulation, we promote and teach our students to make healthy choices and
choose from the “Most Wanted” foods list in the Alberta Nutrition guide for their snacks and lunches.
We are a “peanut aware” school, which means we are intentional in bringing awareness to allergies and
asking students not to bring nuts or nut products into the school. We understand and appreciate that
many families want to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays with their child’s classmates and we
welcome the “treats” that may come with it. Some alternatives to sweet treats are: fruit kabobs, frozen
yogurt tubes, whole grain muffins, and popcorn. A great alternative to food treats are the treasures to
be found at the discount stores: pencils, erasers, craft kits, skipping ropes etc. If you choose to bring
something to celebrate for your child or if there are class celebrations for special events (Christmas, Eid,
Valentine’s, etc.), please remember to be allergy aware and try to send alternatives to sugary snacks.
Thank you for partnering with us in building a healthy, nutritious community.
13
Lunch Time Expectations
Students will be able to enjoy some outside play time from 11:45-12:00. In the event that the weather is
colder than -25, students will enjoy some free time in the school to avoid the extreme temperatures.
This is the only time that students will not be outside so please be sure to have your child dress
appropriately for the weather at all times. If you feel your child is ill and should not go outside, then we
would ask that you please keep them home that day. If they are too ill to be outside, they are likely too
ill to be at school as well. We are also asking for students to bring home EVERYTHING that is brought to
school for their snack and lunch. This will help you as parents to see what your child has eaten that day
as well as support the City of Calgary Green Bin Program by allowing you as a family to sort through the
recycling and composting items. We do not want to make a mess in your child’s lunchkit so we are asking
for you to send either a reusable Tupperware container or ziplock bag for your child to put all their
garbage/ recycling in and bring home. Thank you for helping our school and our environment
Lost and Found
Children are encouraged to be responsible for their own possessions; however, belongings do go missing.
Articles of clothing, lunchboxes, shoes and other items go into the lost and found bin located in the
mudroom.
Valuables and Toys
We ask that students not bring valuable items, electronics, money, playing cards or toys to school. These
items do not accentuate academic learning and are therefore not permitted in school.
Student Telephone Use
Students are expected to make their after school plans with their parents prior to leaving home in the
morning. School telephones will be available for emergency and business calls only.
TRANSPORTATION
The Calgary Board of Education has contracted with Southland Transportation to provide bussing for
eligible students. Bus routes have been determined in consultation between the bus company and our
District Office, taking into account safety of students, ridership time and economics. Please check the
Bus Monitor (http://www.myschoolbusmonitor.ca/) for school bus delays. Parents will be informed if the
bus is going to be exceptionally late, so, it is imperative that the school has current phone numbers (work,
home, cell) of parents and/or care givers. The Board office may cancel school bus operation when road or
weather conditions are hazardous and constitute a safety risk to students. Please listen to the local
media for up-to-date information. When the school remains open and the transportation system is shut
down, parents are responsible for the transportation of their children to and from school.
Problems on the Bus
It is the responsibility of all parents to ensure their child(ren) understand the safety and behavior
expectations while riding the bus. The behavior of students on the bus is generally the bus driver’s
responsibility. Southland provides a set of Behavior Guidelines that are distributed to the students and
parents. If a student is a chronic behavior problem or if the student commits a major infraction of the
rules, the bus driver will complete a Bus Misconduct for the School’s Administration. The Administration
will then contact parents regarding the problem(s). The principal may suspend a student from riding the
school bus should behavior warrant such action.
Bus Students Not Riding on Occasion
If a student will not be riding the bus home, parents must inform the office by a note in the agenda, a
written note or a call to the Bussing Line (403-777-6420 #3) PRIOR TO 2:00pm. Students are not
permitted to ride a bus, other than their designated bus, without written parental consent and approval
14
from the school. If there is no prior confirmation from a parent then your child will be sent home on
their designated bus.
SOUTHLAND SAFETY PROCEDURES
Student Riding Rules
Be on time
Stand back from the bus while waiting
Sit down immediately, face forward
Stay seated at all times
Obey the driver at all times
Talk quietly
STUDENT DROP OFF/PICK UP
When picking up or dropping of children before or after school, parents are asked to exercise proper
traffic safety protocol. Please ensure that you and your children are using marked crosswalks and never
walking between busses or in front of a moving school bus. As well, parents are asked to choose safety
over convenience; parking only in marked areas and obeying traffic rules such as no U-turns.
School Council
Le Roi Daniels School Council invites participation of all parents in monthly meetings held at the school.
Please see our school calendar for the dates.
Volunteers
Parent volunteers are active in many areas of the school – the classrooms, the library, field trips – and we
are always ready to welcome new recruits! It is imperative that parents fill in the Volunteer forms just in
case they can come in and volunteer. Forms are in the office. All volunteers must undergo a police
clearance before volunteering in the school to ensure the safety of the children. All volunteers must
check in at the front office. Young children or other siblings may not accompany volunteers. We
appreciate our dedicated volunteers here at Le Roi Daniels.
I have read and understand the School Procedures and Information.
