After an upset loss to the SheridanLady Broncs and a disappointing thirdplace finish at Regionals, the Lady T-Birdfamily looked to right things at the statetournament.

In the first round of the statetournament, East faced the reigning statechampion, Natrona, and dispatched themin four games.

The Lady T-Birds then faced a familiarface in the Sheridan Lady Broncs. Eastavenged the loss at regionals in threegames to earn a spot in the championshipmatch against Casper Kelly Walsh.

After East dominated the Lady Trojansin the first two sets and had plenty ofchances to put the match away, KellyWalsh crawled back in to take the thirdand fourth games. The Thunderbirdsrallied in the final set and held Kelly Walshoff for a 25-20, 25-16, 24-26, 26-28, 15-12victory. All six sisters and their teammatescelebrated the seventh state title for Eastand the third under coach Dan Box.

Senior Kayla and junior Kylee Higginswork well together on and off the court.All year long the sisters used theirrelationship to their benefit.

They have a set-up in their basement,like a mini-court with tape, to work ontheir footwork, and they are always in thegym together giving pointers and askingeach other questions on what they can doto improve an already impressive game.

Im a hitter and shes a setter, saidKylee. The hitters communicate with thesetters a lot, so even though were not onthe same team, it really helps to havesomebody like that at home.

Kylee developed her interest in thegame by watching Kayla play inelementary school and soon followed suit.Theyve both been at it ever since.

I think it helps to be a versatile player,said Kylee. I like sitting on the bench forvarsity because I get to support my sisterall the time. Shes always supporting me,so its really nice to know that we alwayshave each others back.

Although volleyball is her year-roundlove, school and success in the classroomis Kylees big focus.

I personally want to focus onacademics, she said. Im not reallycounting on any sports scholarships to getme to college.

Kylee and all the girls will continue tobe there for their sisters, making T-Birdvolleyball all about familyand titles.
