How to Write a ReportEdited byBritneyand103 others
Have you been assigned to write a report for your middle or high schoolclass? Here's a basic guide on how to do it.
EditSteps
1) 1
1) Follow the assignment instructions exactly. If your teacher gave youa handout containing the guidelines for the report, re-read it before youstart. Highlight important pieces of information, such as formatting rules, how many sources you need, and what the report should be about.Remember, these are the things your report will be graded on - pay
attention to them.2) Do the research. The research for your report could be as easy as
reading a book, or finding a few sources about something you've beenlearning in class. Whatever it is, make sure you have the correctnumber of sources for your paper. For each source, you should knowthe information you'll need for the bibliography (such as the author, publication date, publisher/website, city in which it was published, pagenumber for where you found the information, and so on).
Consider using notecards to organize your sources. Use one
notecard for each source, and list all the information you mightneed for the bibliography. This can save you a lot of scrambling
later.3
3) Refine your thesis statement. Your teacher might have given you athesis statement, or you might have to come up with one on your own.Either way, make sure it's something you understand well and can writeabout.
Remember that a thesis needs to make a point. Instead of saying"Grass is green," say "Because grass is green, it is capable ofperforming photosynthesis." If you're in high school, your thesisstatement will likely need to be a little more subjective - that is,someone could argue against it, but you're going to argue for it inyour paper.A thesis statement summarizes what you want to prove in yourreport for your reader. All of your subsequent topic sentences ofbody paragraphs should tie back into this thesis, so make surethat it is general enough to stand throughout your essay.

44) Write an outline. An outline doesn't have to be a list - it can also be an
idea web or concept map. Whatever format you use, find a way to writedown your ideas. Start with your thesis (or the topic that the report
should be about, such as the name of the book you read or the scientificprinciple you studied). Then write down two or three big ideas from yourresearch. After you've done that, write down some details about eachidea.
Organize your outline. Once all your basic thoughts are on thepage, figure out the best order for your report. You should startwith your thesis, then go into your big ideas one by one. The ideathat's most closely linked to your thesis should come first. Theidea that links up your first and third ideas should go second
5) Start writing. Once you have an outline that can serve as your rodmap,
start writing the report. Here are some general sections you can
consider including:
Introduction - This should contain your thesis and give your
audience a small preview of what you'll be discussing in your
report.Body paragraphs - The body paragraphs are the "big ideas" you
generated in the outline. Each idea should have its own
paragraph (or several of its own paragraphs, if you're writing a
long report), and it should connect to the paragraphs around it in
some way.
5)
ConclusionThe conclusion wraps up everything you just argued
for in the thesis and body paragraphs. It should be a few
sentences restating why you're right, and why your thesis
statement is true.

Bibliography - If your teacher wanted to double-check your
sources, he or she would use the bibliography. Different teachers
will have you do bibliographies different ways, so check the
assignment. Examples includeMLA,APAandChicago.6
6) Proofread your report. When you've finished writing, print out a draft ofyour report. Read it over carefully, marking any corrections with acolored pen or marker so that you can see them easily later. Makecorrections.
If your teacher allows it, consider having a parent or friendproofread your report as well. Ask them if your arguments make
sense.
7) If you have the time, let your report sit for a few days. Don't readover your report at all during this period. Distance yourself from thepaper so that you can view it with a fresh set of eyes later.
8) Format your report. Try to follow your teacher's formatting instructionsto the letter. If he or she made no formatting instructions, go withsomething clean and classic. Standard format for academic reports inthe United States is 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced
lines, and 1-inch margins all around.

In business, the information provided in reports needs to be easy to find, and written insuch a way that the client can understand it. This is one reason why reports are divided into
sections clearly labelled with headings and sub-headings. Technical information which
would clutter the body of the report is placed in the appendix.
The structure of a report and the purpose and contents of each section is shown below.

PERSONAL REFLECTION
Greetings
First of all, I am very grateful to my lecturers for helping me throughout the
completion of this assignment. I have to admit that this assignment challenged me to the
limit due to my limited command of English. I also take this opportunity to highlight the roles
of my colleagues who kept supporting me with extra information and data to complete this
task.
In my opinion, this assignment also beneficial to improve my English. Since this task
required searching a lot of information in books and via internet, I had to improve my English
in order to understand the content of the information. Therefore, it helped me a lot to
improve my English to the higher level.
Before the completion of the assignment, I have to share and exchange ideas with
some of my classmates how to make this work.
During the completion of this task I face with some difficulties to get the suitable
materials and searched the requirements of questions needed.Actually, I do not understand
the requirements of an assignment question. However,I asked to my friends and read over
and over again the question given.I have been trying to get information from the Internet,
magazines, newspapers and other sources. For prepare a report related to the activity in
school, I did not face a lot of problems just need to translate the report available to the
English language. The school library became one of the main sources to get the information.
I managed to borrow a few books as references. Some of the English teachers also
generous enough to translate and edit my assignments. They also teach me on how to fully
utilize the dictionaries to find the meanings and to understand the grammar of English. In
completing this assignment, I was able to learn the writing of reports, types of reporting and
report writing structure. There are various types report.Among the report writing are business
reports, scientific, accident reports, research reports and etc. most common pattern of report
writing. There should be have title page, executive summary, table of
contents,introduction,body,conclusion,reference list and appendix.
