WHAT WAS THE WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE?

● Women's suffrage is the right of women to vote.

● It is also used for the economic and political reform movement aimed at extending these rights to women and without any restrictions or qualifications such as property ownership, employement or marital status.

The suffrage movement was a very broad one

● In Britain: The Women's Social and Political The Women's Social and Political UnionUnion with Emmeline Pankhurst as its most important representator. She was arrested and sent to prison in serveral occasions between 1907 and 1917, together with other suffragists.

WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE IN BRITAIN● Women's suffrage in Britain was part of a

gradual improvement in women's rights. The movement also campaigned for the right to divorce a husband, the right to education, and the right to have a job such as a doctor.

WOMEN SUFFRAGE IN BRITAIN● 1912 was a turning point for

the Suffragettes, using more militant tactics such as chaining themselves to railings, setting fire to mailbox contents, smashing windows and occasionally detonating bombs

● The First World War provided the first opportunity for women to take on traditional male jobs

● At the end of the war, in 1918 the Representation of the People Act gave women over 30 the vote, and in 1928 all women over the age of 21.

started in 19th Century, culminating in 1920.

● World War I provided the final push for women's suffrage in America. Members of the NWP held up banners saying that the United States was not a democracy.

● During Second Republic (1931-1936) women were granted many new rights of which they had been hitherto deprived.

● Spain was therefore one of the first among South European states to enfranchise women.

● In 1932, laws on divorce and civil marriage were passed. Women were accorded full legal status ; abortion was legalised, the crime of adultery was abolished and legal measures ensuring women's equal access to the labour market were taken.

The end of women's freedom in Spain and its later restauration● After the Spanish Civil

War,Franco's dictatorship tolled the knell of all those democratic rights.

● Numerous democratic laws were abolished: the laws on civil marriage and divorce.

Abortion was severely punished. Women's legal

ability was greatly restricted, and subjected to the

authority of the father or the husband.

● In transition to democracy (1975-1978),women's legal

ability was restored and extended.
