8:30PM—4PM Masonry Conservation Workshop, 1790-1890 (Rear of Memorial Building)This unique day and a half workshop will engage the participants in all aspects of masonry conservation as establishedby the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Preservation of Historic Structures. Work will be concentrated on a c. 1830masonry structure at the rear of the Memorial Building. The class is structured for the homeowner, craftsman, andarchitect. All conference participants are encouraged to stop by and observe the masonry experts during breaks or as analternate to conference sessions. Antique masonry collected from sites across the United States will be on display.The workshop will be moderated by REPUBLIC, INC. principal Stephen Brown and master craftsmen from across thestate. An additional $20 safety kit (must be purchased from TPT, based on insurance and liability) is required along withappropriate protective clothing and shoes. Class size is limited to 30. Please register early.

8:30PM—9:45PM Rural Conservation/Preservation Initiative, Bell’s Bend, Davidson CountyDavid Price, Historian/Architectural Historian, New South AssociatesThis is an overview of the History and Geography of the Conservation area, steps taken for conservation planningand development, and challenges currently threatening the area.

8:30PM—9:45PM Anatomy of a Tax Credit Deal *Don Holm, Farris Bobango Branan PLC (Memphis, TN)Mr. Holm was previously the General Counsel of National Trust Community Investment Corporation (NTCIC), afor-profit subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the United States. NTCIC is a nationalsyndicator of historic and new markets tax credits. This 101 session will give participants an overview of the historictax credit program, discuss combining the Federal historic credit with other credits, outline the steps involved indoing a transaction, and explain what it’s like dealing with the tax credit investor after the transaction closes untilthe investor exits.

McDonald—President, Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation“Revolving Funds, Easements and Preservation…It’s Just Real Estate”Mr. McDonald began work as Executive Director of Historic Savannah Foundation in 1998 and will begin his tenureas the President of the Ga. Trust June 1, 2008. A Montgomery native, he attended Emory University receiving degrees inHistory and English. He graduated from the University of Georgia, School of Law in 1982, and after a distinguishedlaw career he served from 1986-1990 as Executive Director of the Historic Salisbury Foundation, and from 1990—1998as Director of the Mobile Historic Development Commission. Mark has served as a board member for a number oflocal, state and national organizations including the Board of Advisors to the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

11:30AM—1:00PM 3rd Annual Tennessee Preservation St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 311 West 7th StreetLeadership Luncheon (1860-1861) Parish HouseJoin Congressman Lincoln Davis and other local officials and dignitaries as Congressman Davis speaks onconservation and preservation issues of interest to Tennesseans. 1:15PM—2:30PM Comprehensive Economic Planning, Maury Co., Conserving Natural and Cultural ResourcesBridget Jones, Ed.D., Executive Director, Cumberland Regions Tomorrow and Richard QuinThis is CRT’s first regional pilot community plan to advance to this point. This cutting edge pilot project focuses onnatural and cultural resources as a top priority and is a model for making conservation heritage tourism integral toregional economic planning.

2:45PM—4:00PM Restoration of Tennessee’s Historic Executive Residence—A Case StudyRex E. Garton, Jr., AIA CSI CCS LEED AP Hart Freeland Roberts, Inc.Mr. Garton has been intimately involved with this project and will discuss the complex story on the unique renovationsunderway at the Governor’s Residence, from existing conditions through the design process and projected completion.

2:45PM—4:00PM The Coming Impact of the Boomer Generation on Main Street—Demographic, Disabilities,and Design Review. *Phil Thomason, Thomason and Associates, Principal, (Nashville, TN)An overview of the impact Boomers will have in the next three decades as they retire and as many move back intohistoric downtowns. Communities must prepare for this impact by making their downtowns “Boomer friendly.”Mr. Thomason, a nationally recognized preservation planner, will present workable solutions to these challenges.

9AM-10AM Preserve America Presentations Memorial Building 308 West 7th Streetand Recognition EventSpeaker: John Nau, Chairman ACHP and Tom Miller, Moderator, Former Mayor of Franklin, ACHP MemberFirst Lady, Laura Bush InvitedPlease join us for a special public recognition of four Preserve America Communities in Tennessee: Columbia,Oak Ridge, Rugby, and Victorian Village in Memphis. (We will also be celebrating Maury County and Columbia’s 200thanniversary.) These communities have fulfilled the special requirements to achieve designation as a “Preserve AmericaCommunity,” and this will be the official public presentation of those awards. John Nau, Chairman of the President’sAdvisory Council for Historic Preservation, will be on hand and the First Lady, Laura Bush has been invited. This is a specialopportunity to honor some of the premier preservation communities in Tennessee, meet and greet their leaders, andparticipate in Chairman Nau’s recognition of their efforts.

10:15am-11:30am THC Director’s report and an update on the Restoration of Historic WynnewoodPatrick McIntyre, Director of the Tennessee Historical Commission and the State of Tennessee HistoricPreservation Officer, (SHPO) and Jerry Wooten, State Historic Sites Director & Capital Projects Administrator.Mr. McIntyre will give a brief talk on preservation in Tennessee and Mr. Wooten will make a presentation of the eventssurrounding the tornado damage to the National Historic Landmark site, Wynnewood in Castalian Springs and theextraordinary efforts the Tennessee Historical Commission and the state have undertaken to save and restore thisnational landmark.

10:15AM-11:30AM Architectural Primer of Tennessee’s Complex Architectural PatrimonyClaudette Stager, National Register Coordinator, Tennessee Historical Commission andPhil Thomason, Thomason and Associates.Ms. Stager and Mr. Thomason will give us a comprehensive historic overview of our diverse architecture. Ms. Stager willbegin with 19th century and early 20th century developments, and Mr. Thomason will present developmentsculminating in the late 20th century. A presentation of roadside “fun” architecture will complete the session. Ms. Stageris co-author of Looking Beyond the Dixie Highway: Dixie Roads and Culture.
