Airbag-Supplemental Restraint SystemThe Airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)front, side* and side curtain* airbags are designed toprovide further protection for the driver andoutboard passenger in addition to the primary safetyprotection provided by the seat belts.

Please read the caution boxes below, and refer tothe Owner’s Manual for more details.

*If installed

•The driver and front passenger airbag SupplementalRestraint System (SRS) is designed only as a supplement tothe primary protection of the seat belt systems of thedriver and front passenger. The front seat occupants areparticularly susceptible to injury if they do not wear theirseat belts; when sudden braking or a collision occurs, theymay be thrown forward. To obtain maximum protection inan accident, the driver and all passengers in the vehicleshould always wear their seat belts when driving becauseserious injuries or death can result to unrestrainedoccupants. For instructions and precautions concerning theseat belt system, see “Seat belts” in the Owner’s Manual.

•Toyota strongly urges the use of a proper child restraintsystem on the rear seat that conforms to the size of thechild. According to accident statistics, a child is safer whenproperly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat.

•Never use a rear-facing child restraint system in the frontseat. The force of the rapid inflation of the passengerairbag can cause severe injury or death to a child.

•Unless it is unavoidable, do not install a forward-facingchild restraint system on the front seat. If you must installa forward-facing child restraint system on the front seat,move the seat as far back as possible.

•Make sure you have complied with all installationinstructions provided by the child restraint manufacturerand the system is properly secured.

•The SRS side airbags and side curtain airbags (optional) aredesigned to deploy in certain types of severe side impactcollisions. In all other collisions, the side impact and sidecurtain airbags will not deploy. For instructions andprecautions, see your Owner’s Manual.

•Do not lean against the side doors when the vehicle is inuse. The side airbags and side curtain airbags inflate withconsiderable speed and force. Death or serious injurycould result.

•Do not modify, cover or replace the surface of the frontseats. Such changes could disable the system or preventthe airbags from activating correctly, resulting in death orserious injury.

Tire Pressure Warning System*

TRAC (Traction Control)*Two-wheel drive modelsHelps control spinning of the front wheels whichmay occur when accelerating on slippery roads.

Four-wheel drive modelsHelps control the spinning of all wheels which mayoccur when accelerating on slippery roads.

1 Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is an electronic system designedto help the driver maintain vehicle control under adverse conditions. It is not a substitute for safe driving practices.Factors including speed, road conditions and driver steeringinput can all affect whether VSC will be effective in preventingloss of control.

2 Brake-Assist is designed to help the driver take full advantage ofthe benefits of ABS (Anti-lock Brake System). It is not asubstitute for safe driving practices. Braking effectiveness alsodepends on proper brake-system maintenance and tire and roadconditions.

This vehicle will handle and maneuver differently from anordinary passenger car because it is also designed for off-roaduse. It has a higher ground clearance and higher center ofgravity than an ordinary passenger car. This vehicle designfeature causes this type of vehicle to be more likely to rollover. Utility vehicles have a significantly higher rollover ratethan other types of vehicles.

An advantage of the higher ground clearance is a better viewof the road allowing you to anticipate problems. However, itis not designed for cornering at the same speeds as ordinarypassenger cars any more than low-slung sports cars aredesigned for off-road use. Therefore, sharp turns at excessivespeeds may cause rollover.

Failure to operate this vehicle correctly may result in loss ofcontrol, accidents or vehicle rollover causing death or serious injury. Be sure to read your Owner’s Manual for moreinformation on safe driving both on and off-road.

Always observe the following precautions to minimize the risk of serious personal injury or damage to your vehicle:Always observe the following precautions to minimizethe risk of serious personal injury or damage to yourvehicle:•In a rollover crash, an unbelted person is significantly

more likely to die than a person wearing a seat belt.Therefore, the driver and all passengers should fastentheir seat belts whenever the vehicle is moving.

•Avoid sharp turns or abrupt maneuvers, if at allpossible. Failure to operate this vehicle correctly mayresult in loss of control or vehicle rollover causingdeath or serious injury.

•Loading cargo on the roof luggage carrier will makethe center of the vehicle gravity higher. Avoid highspeeds, sudden starts, sharp turns, sudden braking orabrupt maneuvers; otherwise, it may result in a lossof ability to operate this vehicle correctly.

•Always slow down in gusty crosswinds. Because of itsprofile and higher center of gravity, your vehicle ismore sensitive to side winds than an ordinarypassenger car. Slowing down will allow you to havebetter control.

•When driving off-road or in rugged terrain, do not driveat excessive speeds, jump, make sharp turns, strikeobjects, etc. This may cause loss of control or vehiclerollover causing death or serious injury. You are alsorisking expensive damage to your vehicle’s suspensionand chassis.

•Do not drive horizontally across steep slopes. Drivingstraight up or straight down is preferred. Your vehicle(or any similar off-road vehicle) can tip over sidewaysmuch more easily than forward or backward.

Avoid Abrupt Maneuversand Excessive Speed.
