Official bulletin of District 201Q2

District Governor Gary Young Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club

Issue 2 : August 2019

Well I have gotten off to a great start.

I should start with the International Convention where all the District Governors for 2019/2020 were sworn in. This was somewhat, to me at least, disappointing in the way it was organised but nevertheless we still managed to have a good time.

I think Pattie’s bag had more excitement as it wandered around Europe from London for a month until it decided to come home!

So what have I been up to since returning home?

I have started my club visits with the first being my own club Townsville Castle Hill then a quick visit to the combined Zone 5/6 meeting in Townsville, a visit also to the Townsville Host Club and learned more about their club project and this week the Townsville Barrier Reef Lions Club Officer Installation.

The weekend of 27/28 of July I travelled to Camp Kanga to visit 36 students of the Youth Exchange program. The students came from Italy, Germany, China, USA and Indonesia, to name a few. There were also students from Proserpine, Hughenden and Tully.

I somehow think that their supervisors were both sad and happy to see them all go home.

Thursday 18 July I accompanied PDG Keith Leonard OAM to a presentation night on board the YWAM Medical Ship. I believe Lion Keith is the Lions R4S Chairman. He tells me that Lions have donated more than 20,000 pair of recycled prescription spectacles each year to YWAM since 2009 to take to PNG.

I also had the opportunity to speak to the Papua New Guinea Foreign Affairs Minister about Lions in PNG being

part of 201Q2. He seemed very interested so we shall see what comes about.

The coming year will be one of hard work, change how we do things and our processes, training for those members who would like to advance themselves both as part of their club and also in leading the district in the future.

We, not only the district management group but also our club executives and our most prized group, you the members, need to look back at what we did to encourage our members in supporting our communities and also encourage like-minded people to come and join us .

To this end we have the “Campaign 1250“ which is our campaign to increase the district membership to 1250 by the end of February at the latest, along with the district membership care program, which means reducing our membership drops. In order to facilitate this, instead of dropping members we should contact those members, if we are not already doing so and ask the questions:

“Why haven’t we seen you for a while, is everything OK, how can we help?“

“Are you having a problem paying your dues, how can we help?“ and

Notes from Cabinet Secretary Norm McMullen

Greetings Lions, Lionesses and Leos Welcome to my very first report as your Cabinet

Secretary, this has been a steep learning curve for me, as I come to grips with new processes and some technical issues to start my year.

All clubs have a new platform for reporting activities and I do encourage all secretaries to log into the MyLion site and familiarize yourselves with this site and the reporting of your clubs activities. It is not fair on your members by not reporting all the hard work they do in serving communities or their fundraising efforts.

Training and familiarizing yourselves with this site will become easier as time goes by, there is plenty of support available to every club and every member that will ensure your club’s activities are recorded and this information can be used for Lions International in demonstrating how effective we Lions really are. The District’s reporting doesn’t reflect the commitment I see from clubs as I meet and get to know each of you and reflects some deeper issues that we must fix if we want the Lions community to know we are better than the reports reflect.

Information on the Lions site has been compromised as we transitioned to the new MYLion platform and some members information changed. While I am unable to confirm why the information changed, I can confirm the data can be fixed easily. Please log into the MyLCI site and check your members’ information and focus on the birth dates, last time I checked we had so many birthdays on the 1st of January and I know many of these Lions also celebrate another birthday later in the year.

As I write this report, we do not have a nomination for the upcoming vacant 2nd Vice District Governor or a nomination for the 2021 201Q2 District Convention. If your club has a suitable member that can progress to be

a leader of this district, please talk to them and encourage them to seek a nomination to the executive role. Likewise, if your club or Zone is interested in showcasing your town and boosting the local economy, please consider hosting a district convention and talk to your Zone Chair.

Please check your members and clubs financial status to ensure your delegates are able to participate and vote at Convention in Mareeba and any Notice of Motions or nominations for 2nd VDG are received by August 5th. I do hope to see you in Mareeba.

Lastly I ask every Lion to remember why you became a Lion, a Lioness or a Leo, and what you wanted to achieve when you decided to join one of the world’s largest community organisations. What was it about Lions that attracted you to keep coming back and does your club still reflect that same appeal for others as it did back in the day? If not … it is time to regain the passion.

Change starts with you!

Fellow Lions,

Each month I will be doing a bar graph of how the increases and drops are going

re the membership numbers for District 201Q2.

This bar graph represents the whole of 2018 – 2019. The one next month will start from the beginning of the new Lions year showing the progressive membership figures for the 2019 – 2020 year.

Our new membership increases are quite good with an increase of 135 member during the 2018 and 2019 year.

It is the drops that we really need to focus on. We lost 212 members last year, some of which we have no control over – death, members transferred, etc. It is the ones we have control over that we really have to try and hold.

If we can cut the drops by half, the members gains would have been +29 not -77. This would have equated to a membership of 1177 at the end of June not 1082 we ended up with.

The new members bar graph for June is not showing up as there were only two new members for the month. It would be a fantastic result if we could transpose the

above new members YTD and the dropped members YTD bar graph this coming year.

Crater Lakes: 12,000 years in the making

While you are here for the District Convention, why not visit our ancient crater lakes right here on the Atherton Tablelands. The twin volcanic crater lakes of Barrine and Eacham are tranquil pools of water, fringed by rainforest.

Formed approximately 12,000 years ago by violent volcanic eruptions, it took several hundred years for water to fill these giant craters and for the trees to grow back, creating the placid lakes used today by local families and visitors for recreation.

There are no streams flowing into or out of the lakes, water is lost only through soakage or evaporation and is only replenished by rain.

Many people are surprised to discover the level can fluctuate by up to four metres between wet and dry seasons.

LAKE BARRINE

At Lake Barrine, the Heritage Teahouse Café has been in the Curry family since 1923, with the fourth generation still offering tasty light lunches and Devonshire teas, as well as a 45 minute guided rainforest and wildlife cruise on the lake.

On the cruise you may see fish, turtles and eels and many waterbirds and may be lucky to spot a large scrub python sunning itself on flattened sections of grass or fallen trees.

There is a short walk to the towering twin Kauri trees, thought to be over 1,000 years old, while a longer 5km circuit will take you along the shoreline.

LAKE EACHAM

The clear blue and green waters of Lake Eacham make it a go-to place on a summer’s day and with

motored craft completely banned, it is a serene and pristine beauty spot all year round.

Surrounded by dense rainforest, the lake has an average depth of 65m. Access to the water is simple and there is a pontoon provided for those who want to play in the deeper water.

There are several viewing platforms giving a better look at this breathtaking lake and its inhabitants, including fish and turtles.

Lake Eacham is a 10 minute drive from Yungaburra, with the drive through the enchanted rainforest giving way to a picture-book view.

There is a 3km walking track circling the lake and the area is renowned for birdwatching, not surprising given more than 180 species have been recorded within the rainforest.

There are picnic areas and barbecue facilities at the lakeside and numerous places to view stunning scenery around the 50ha lake circumference.

No motorised boats are allowed on either Lake Eacham or Barrine, but you can paddle out in a canoe or kayak to enjoy the

tranquillity and abundant wildlife up close.

This information was taken from Atherton Tablelands 2019/20 Visitor’s Guide book.

Townsville Castle Hill Lions donate to ALCCRF

Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation Trustee PDG Aussie Lanphier recently presented a Gold Award certificate to Townsville Castle Hill Lions President Dawn Rolfe for the Club’s generous donation of $10,000.00 to the Foundation.

Due to an increase in applications and dog numbers from rescue and shelters reducing, we commenced a Puppy Program in 2018. The young pups are placed with foster carers around Adelaide for six months whilst they grow and learn to be a normal dog. During this early stage, they wear a pale blue Australian Lions Hearing Dogs Foster Puppy jacket, then when training is completed, they become an accredited Australian Lions Hearing Dog, and graduate to the well known Orange jacket for the rest of their working life.

As with all our dogs, our new puppies are all shapes and sizes to meet the varied needs of our recipients. Not everyone wants a small dog and likewise not everyone wants nor has the room for a large dog.

Also there are many people who would love to foster one of our puppies in their homes, but unfortunately foster carers are limited to the suburbs around Adelaide due to the close proximity to our Hearing Dog Training Centre located at Verdun near Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills.

Our Puppy Program Co-ordinator, frequently assesses the puppies progress, and decides when pups should return to the Centre and begin training. Foster carers are able to visit the Training Centre frequently and see how well their little charges are progressing through the program.

Would you like to sponsor a Puppy? Although puppy foster carers are restricted to the Adelaide region, Lions and Lions Clubs that support a puppy in foster care are given naming rights for the dogs, and receive monthly updates on their progress while in Foster care and training.

Sponsorship cost of an Australian Lions Hearing Dog Puppy is:- $3000 for Club / Corporate Sponsorship and $1500 for individual sponsorship.

If you are interested, please send details of your Club, contact person, contact phone, postal address and email address to Australian Lions Hearing Dogs at:

[email protected]

Volunteer badges are available at the low cost of $6.60 each and it is suggested that each club have a couple on hand for use by non-Lions working at fundraising events or on projects.

Cardwell Lions say G’day to Bernhard

A BBQ function was held on Saturday evening at the Cardwell Lions Hall to welcome Bernhard Horz from Herborn, Germany. Bernard is a Lions Youth Exchange student and is being hosted by Lion Julie and Lion Ian McKay from Cardwell Lions.

Lion Irene Braddick and Lion Martin Braddick (Camp Kanga Chairpersons) from Tully Lions Club also attended with Tareke, a student from Tully State High School, who will be attending Camp Kanga with Bernhard. In total there will be 36 youths from 18 countries attending Camp Kanga (Lions International Camp) in Proserpine.

So far Bernhard has enjoyed his time in Cardwell and visits to Kirrama Range, Wallaman Falls, Paronella Park, Tully Gorge, Tully Mill Tour, Ingham Show and all the tourist sites around Cardwell. He has also enjoyed some fishing and crabbing trips.

Cardwell Lions held an auction at the Lions Hall on Sunday 28 July. There was also a car boot sale and market stalls.

Dalrymple Regional Lions Club were happy to sponsor young footballer Chase Glenright to go away to the NQ Rugby competition in Brisbane with his team.

Dalrymple Lions make a dream come true

He was so excited to be able to join the team. Due to lack of funds, as the family has been going through cancer treatment for his mother, he didn’t think he would be able to go.

It was great to make this little boy’s dream come true.

TODAY'S RESEARCH IS TOMORROW'S CURE The Queensland and Northern New South Wales Lions Medical Research Foundation

is committed to start-up funding for world class medical research.

Welcome one and all!

National Diabetes Week has been recognised this month and Dr Olivia Holland has been out and about, sharing this important week with us all. If you haven't followed her on our Facebook page and would like to catch up on her activities, you can do that HERE

I want to take this opportunity to firstly thank all those clubs and individuals who have very kindly supported the ART UNION, but also make a request for clubs to offer their further support for the Art Union as it draws to a close at the end of August. There are still tickets to sell so we need to make these last few weeks count as they will be critical to its success. All money raised goes to support our researchers and their valuable work.

Support comes in many shapes and forms and this month I'd like to especially thank the Northern NSW Community Trust. A recent and very generous donation of $15,000 has only served to highlight that this Trust, in District 201Q1, over its lifetime has been a generous and consistent supporter of the Foundation. PDG Ray Phippard OAM was instrumental in establishing the Trust, and the original constitution stipulated the support of the Region 1 community and Lions Medical

Research Foundation as its objectives. Ray was active within Lions Medical Research Foundation since its formation so it was an obvious progression to include it as an established recipient.

There is no doubt that Ray Phippard’s pre-eminent considerations centred around his enduring interest in Lions Medical Research Foundation. If we take into account his ongoing donations to the Foundation and couple that with his vision and influence at Trust level, he played a substantial part in the success of the Foundation. Ray’s admittance to the Australian Lions Hall of Fame, his OAM and life membership to the Past District Governors Association are testament and influence at Trust level, he played a substantial part in the success of the Foundation. Ray’s admittance to the Australian Lions Hall of Fame, his OAM and life membership to the Past District Governors Association are testament to his devotion not only to Lions Medical Research Foundation but to Lionism in general.

With kind regards Allan Turner—Chairman #MedicalResearchMatters

National Diabetes Week ran from 14 to 20 July this year and it gave LMRF researcher Dr Olivia Holland a chance to share some insights with us.

She believes resolutely that ...

'Diabetes is a huge health problem, and not one we will be able to solve overnight. Continuing research will be vital to helping those already suffering from diabetes, but also in stopping more people from being affected in the future.

‘I believe that if you really want to influence health outcomes, it’s not treating long term damage that matters, it’s preventing that damage to begin with. With assistance from Lions Medical Research Foundation and their many supporters, other researchers and I are able to continue to discover more about diabetes and help improve the way we treat this critical health issue.’

Things to think about What if my dog only brings

back the ball because he thinks I like throwing it?

If poison is past its expiry date, is it more poisonous or is it no longer poisonous?

Which letter is silent in SCENT—the S or the C?

Do twins ever realise that one of them was unplanned?

Why is the letter W in English called double u? Shouldn’t it be called double v?

Many animals probably need glasses, but nobody knows it.

If you rip a hole in a net, there are actually fewer holes in it that there were before.

Your future self is watching you right now through memories.

The church organist The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how

he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in. The substitute wanted to know what to play.

"Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances."

During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Anybody who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."

At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star Spangled Banner." And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!
