REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

Somersworth, N. H. February 1, 1930

To THE ScHooL BoARD AND CITIZENS oF :MADBURY:-

Last July the State Board of Education reorganized several supervisory unions and the present union of which your district is a member, consists of Somersworth, Durham, Rollinsford and Madbury and is known as Supervisory Union No. 56.

The opening of schools in September found both teachers and superintendent unacquainted ''"ith conditions but with both school houses filled to capacity. Miss Mary M. Daley had 25 pupils at the Center School with all grades represented, 4 being in the 8th grade. Miss Eleanor Redden at the North School had 24 pupils in all grades with one in grade 8. The schools were well equippe.d with desks, books and maps and with jacketed stoves. The sanitary conditions "·ere not good and the janitor service has been poor because it has been done by pupil janitors paid seventy-fiye cents a "·eek. Pupils have often suffered from cold. The school nurse, Miss Ina M . Marden, has cooperated to help make the buildings and pupils clean, and has helped the teachers to start hot lunches. The Ladies Aid of J\Iadbury, the Womens' Guild, and the \Voman's Club of Durham have each contributed money to help pay the expenses of the lunches, and our debt is here acknowledged.

The attendance so far at the Center School has been as good as that of any school in this union, but the North

36

School has had Yery poor attendance. Much of the absence has been caused by sickness, in the home or among .the pupils. On my last visit I found 12 pupils present and 11 absent. I feel that the attendance could be better and would be better, if the parents concerned only realized how much irregular attendance hindered the proper advancement of the pupils.

What we should do at Madbury Center, if more pupils asked to enter, is a problem. The logical thing, in my opinion, is to build a ne\\. two room building, centrally located, and to transport pupils thereto. I understand that this has been advocated before and voted down by the district. Another solution "·ould be to send the 8th grade pupils to DoYer or elsewhere where they could get a better preparation for high school.

Both of your tear hers are Normal School graduates with experience and arc doing good work. They have gained the good will of the pupils and it is a pleasure to see them all at \\·ork. It is hardly possible, however, for them to do their best \Yark under present conditions. There are three other one teacher rural schools in this supervisory union and tests which I have given to all show that the pupils in those schools are nearer to the grade standard than are the pupils of Madbury. One reason for this is that the teachers in those schools are given increases in salary and retained when they have been successful. Another reason is that the 8th grade pupils arc removed to other schools.

Madbury ma)- think that the cost of her schools is high but in comparison with the median of the State for 1928-29, a;:: published by the State Board of Education, it is not. The State Median is $83.35 per pupil and Madbury's cost is $71.27. Of the 244 school district 163 pay more per pupil than Madbury. If your schools arc to maintain a satisfactory standard and your pupils enter high srhool properly prepared, more mone~· must.

37

be paid your teachers and repairs made to your buildings. The records for the year ending July 1, 1929 give the

following statistics: Average number of days schools in session 177, which

v,·as satisfactory.

is low.

50 56 92, which

Visits of the Superintendent . . . . . . . . . . . . . 52 Visits of the School Nurse. 40

Good community spirit was shown at the union Christmas tree exercises. We all, superintendent, nurse, and teachers, feel that we are having the support of the school board and a patient public in our efforts for good schools.

Respectfully submitted,

HOWARD L. WINSLOW.

LABAN M. EMERSON

The town has met with the loss of a Yenerable and Yalued citizen in the death of Mr. Emerson. He was born in Madbury May 7, 1845, the son of Solomon D. Emerson and Elizabeth Pinkham, and lived his entire life of eight-four years on his birthplace. The record of so long a life thus spent in service to his family and the town is \\·ell \\·orth noting, and too much praise cannot be given to one, who, amid the quiet scenes and duties of the farm and surrounding country, cou ld for such a period keep the even tenor of his \mys, standing firm in the faith that makes for righteousness, doing many deeds of kindness to neighbors and fellow townsmen, and never failing to respond generously to all appeals of charity and a worthy cause.

During the years, as his life's interests naturally increased , he kept in touch with all the advance movements

40

of the day, profiting by all the changes which his judgment prnnounced good. His passing was like the setting of the sun at the close of a "Perfect day".

Mr. Emerson was descended from a line of ancestors in the famous Emerson family, and can trace his special branch back to the pioneer, Michael Emerson, who came to America in 1650. Michael \Vas the son of Thomas Emerson of Cadny, England, where records show of his baptism and burial, and whose will is still extant. On the side of Mr. Emerson's mother, the Pinkham family descended from one Richard Pinckhame of the Dover combination of 1640 who had a grant of land on Great Bay' sometime previous to June 30, 1659.

Another ancestor in direct line was also noted for pioneer work, being Daniel Pinkham who settled a section of the White Mountains and for whom Pinkham's Notch is named.

Mr. Emerson married Electa A. Lane of Lee, N. H., who was the daughter of Alexander Lane and Mary J. Snell, the latter a descendant of Thomas Snell, one of the early settlers of New-town, a part of Lee.

There were three children of this union of whom Mrs. Rosa A. Emerson Hayes, and Albert D. Emerson are residents of Madbury.
