Welcome to the fall, 2012 edition of Expand Your Horizons.Once again, the Edson and District Community Learning

Society is pleased to offer many lifelong learning opportunities forresidents of Edson and surrounding area. Courses will be offered in first aid, safety, computers and technology, as well as Englishand Spanish. We also offer general interest courses such asgenealogy, money management, and crafts.

Our Learning Centre staff will accommodate your learningneeds from literacy challenges to GED completion, apprenticeshipand beyond. They will help you determine exactly which courseswill lead you to your goals and draw up an individual learning plan.Tutorial support is also available.

Community Registration Night will take place at the EdsonFriendship Centre on September 6, 2012. International Women’sDay 2013 is in the planning process and is sure to be an excitingevent. Ground Disturbance Level 2This is a 6.5-hour program. The first two hours review Level 1. Level 2 is designed for anyone who issupervising a ground disturbance; independently performing a ground disturbance; or issuing andreceiving ground disturbance permits. This program will ensure that Level 2 personnel fully understandall regulations and variances involved when a ground disturbance happens. The Level 2 program is thestandard program recognized by industry. A three-year certificate is issued upon successful completionof the course.Course dates:

Mental Health First Aid Canada: for Adults who Interact with Youth The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course isdesigned to help people provide initial support tosomeone who may have a mental health problem or beexperiencing a mental health crisis. The Boys & Girls Club of Edson & District offers a variety of programs for children ages 5 -12

After School ProgramThe program runs from September to June, 3 pm to 6 pm and 2:15pm to 6 pm on early dismissaldays. We focus on academic support, physical activity and healthy eating. We also provide free bussingand pick-up from local schools and an afternoon snack.

KinderClubOn non-kindergarten days (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, the Club offers a variety of activities such as story time, computer learning, free play, organized gym time, basic science, math, writing activities, cooking and baking, outdoor play, field trips. We include a morningand afternoon snack.

Full Day CampOn all non-student days (including Christmas Break, Spring Break and Teacher's Convention), from8:30 am to 6:00 pm, the Club offers a variety of activities such as swimming, skating, bowling, themedays and out-of-town field trips. We include a morning and afternoon snack.

Summer CampFor July and August from 8:30 to 6 pm, the Club offers a variety of activities, such as swimming, bowling, scavenger hunts, theme days and many out-of-town field trips. The summer program offers full summer, monthly, weekly and daily rates.

Red Cross Certified Babysitting CourseOffered every second month from 10 am to 2 pm, Saturday & Sunday, for children ages

10 and up, this program teaches the basics of infant and childcare, activityplanning, how to deal with unplanned situations and first aidtraining.

Quilter’s Quarters

Beginners Paper Piecing: Make this quick table runner in the day. Choose from two designs. One day class,Saturday 28th.

Beginners Quilting: This class is for everyone who wants tolearn to quilt. Learn all the basics of quilting in a fun, socialsetting while making your own quilt. Class runs for sixevenings starting the beginning of October.

Machine Quilting: Do you have a pile of finished quilt tops,and don’t know what to do with them? This class will giveyou some confidence with building your machine quiltingskills. One day class, Saturday October 6th.

Prairie Point Pizzazz! Make this stunning wall hanging andadd a new dimension to your quilt projects. One day class,Saturday October 27th.

Fireside Rag Quilt: Start with a simple rag quilt pattern, andadd design element to personalize your quilt. Two Saturdaysin November will have you cuddling with your rag quilt.

3D Flowers Baby Quilt: You won’t need 3D glasses to enjoythis quilt. This is sure to be the favorite quilt for your nextbaby quilt project. One Day class, Saturday November 3rd.

The Vivian Apron: Make this ‘Retro-Style’ Apron in one dayand bake muffins when you get home. One day class,Saturday November 24th.

FALL RETREAT! We are off to Jasper for our annual quilting weekend. Reserve your spot for this

weekend long quilting retreat. Friday October 19 – Sunday October 21.

UFO FRIDAYS! Bring your current quilt UFO (unfinished object) get some help,

or just spend the day quilting and visiting.Last Friday of every month 10:00 – 4:30.

Kids’ Sewing!Kids 8 years and older can get together with friends to learn quilting and make a variety of

projects from seasonal gifts to bed quilts. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays after school are reserved just for the kids (3:30-5:15) Call for openings.
