th
The early years of the Lancaster Town Band by Marlo K. Schermerhorn, First Director & Co-Founder
Upon our return, I chose not to continue as director, and Bardol was pleased to continue in the capacity. He was a trombonist and pianist, a composer and arranger, and spent many hours copying off parts for the band to play. He provided about a dozen Friday night concerts each summer. He made his library available by depositing it in the garage of the home on Como Park Boulevard of Frank Strabel, the band librarian. Bardol, during the winter months, held open band classes at the high school under the Adult Education Program. By 1954, band membership had grown to about 35. In 1957, Bardol became ill and had to bow out. The baton was passed to Richard E. Pascucci, a graduate of Lancaster High School and Ithaca College. He was an ambitious young man and a fine clarinetist who had joined the music staff of Lancaster schools. He directed the Twin Village Band until 1970, at which time Clarence E. Kemp took over. His decade of tenure as leader of the band was filled with band “shows” that pleased his audiences. Kemp died Jan. 30, 1983, and by then Pascucci had taken over the directing again. The common name of the organization was now the Lancaster Town Band. A leg injury suffered in his youth caused Pascucci to give up directing and teaching in 1996, when Richard Goss became the new and present director. As he and the players are presenting the last concerts of this season, their minds are going forward to something new next year – a band shell for the community and band. 7
From The Lancaster/Depew Bee July 31, 2008 On a pleasant evening in 1942, a group of local bandsmen met in the music room at the south end of the Lancaster Union Free High School, now the middle school, on Aurora Street. They were Walter Bardol and Jesus Soto of Depew and Lancaster, residents Frank and Paul Strabel, brothers, and myself, director of the Lancaster High School band. Ray Bardol, brother of Walter, was scheduled to appear but had to keep another engagement. These six individuals were truly the founders of the organization now known as the Lancaster Town Band. Walter Bardol, director of the Depew Band, said that he had asked for the meeting and explained that membership in the group had fallen off so much that rehearsals had been canceled and the band had been dissolved. He thought, however, that there were enough willing bandsmen in the Lancaster-Depew area to support a new band. The members of the group decided to form a new group called the Twin Village Band. I was asked to be the director, and I accepted. The band grew to 15 to 20 members. We played summer concerts around the town, and after a few years, we were taken under the umbrella of the Town of Lancaster Recreation Department. In spring 1947, I spoke to Walter Bardol about taking over the band for the summer months because my wife, Cleta, our son, Devon, and I were planning a trip to the West Coast. He accepted. librarian. Bardol, during the winter months, held open band classes at the high school under the Adult Education Program

Loren Geiger (1946-2009) was a band director in the Orchard Park Central Schools for 37 years, as well as an internationally known composer/arranger and band historian. A native of Eggertsville, NY, Loren followed the path of his parents to attend the Eastman School of Music (B.M. 1968, M.M. 1970), studying tuba and music education. Upon graduation he began his long tenure in the Orchard Park Schools, first at the elementary schools, then at the middle school, and also directed the OPMS marching band. In addition to being a devoted teacher, he performed as a tubist in a great variety of local ensembles, including the Orchard Park Symphony and the Clarence Summer Orchestra, for which he also served as librarian, the Lancaster Town Band, the Amherst Symphony, Marine Band in Washington D C

and the American Legion Band of the Tonawandas. He frequently performed as a soloist and conductor as well. A lifelong circus fan, he enjoyed performing with the Shrine Circus and traveling rodeos when they came to town.
For 25 years he published a band history newsletter, the Boombah Herald, as a means to promote the history of band music around the world. He became a noted historian in the field, and maintained an extensive personal music collection. Loren distinguished himself as an arranger and composer of both band and orchestra works. He has over 800 titles to his credit, and his works have been commissioned by ensembles around the world, from Sweden to Japan to the United States Marine Band in Washington D.C.
He married Elaine Sivers in 1976, and was father to Rebecca Hamlen, Sarah, and Diana, passing on his heritage of music to his family.

Concert No. 5 – Tuesday, July 6, 2010, 7:30pmRichard E. Pascucci Memorial Band Shell
For sixty plus years, the Lancaster Town Band performed summer concerts in the Town of Lancaster without a permanent home. A permanent Band Shell was a long time dream of the late Richard Pascucci, former director of the Band. After performing on the steps of Como Park Elementary School and the picnic shelter at Keysa Park, the Band spent the last year’s of Mr. P’s tenure performing on the portable Erie County Band Shell Trailer by the Como Park Lighthouse. After the trailer was condemned the band moved to the Marino Gazebo inside Como Park.
Richard Pascucci’s unfortunate passing brought renewed efforts to build a shell in his honor. Erie County’s 2005 budget crisis, which temporarily closed the county parks, forced the Band to find a new home. Current Director, Richard Goss and I searched out possible locations within the Town of Lancaster. At the suggestion of vocalist Linda Koziol, the Band began performing under a tent at the Lancaster Youth Bureau. In September of 2005 we met with the Lancaster Town Board to seek permission to build a shell at the Town Youth Bureau. A small group of interested individuals began meeting to chart out a course of action. Amy MacPeek, our Secretary/Treasurer; Richard Goss, Music Director; Tom Fox, our “engineer”; Ken Graber, our legal counsel; Mark Wendel, our architect; Dan DeAngelis, associate conductor, Mike Koziol and myself comprised the initial group. In early 2006 thanks to the efforts of Amy MacPeek and Ken Graber we became a non-for profit 501C3 Corporation. This was the first of many steps along the way. In August of that year we signed a ground lease agreement with the Town of Lancaster. These two events allowed us to move forward with our plans.
Tom Fox and Mark Wendel worked together on the construction planning. Joe Casimino and Ken Graber helped us secure grant funding from Dale Volker and Dennis Gabryszak. Our loyal audience and community gave generously to our cause. Supervisor Bob Giza helped cement the final piece of the puzzle, securing funding from Tops Supermarkets. After five years of meeting and planning, construction began in spring of 2009. Special thanks go out to everyone listed in this program, and to anyone we may have inadvertently missed. Above all else, we thank Richard Pascucci for his dream and inspiration.
