We first arrived in the summer, and everything was so pretty. I took lots of photos! Tourists visit Moreton-in-Marsh, or Moreton, as we call it, because there are lots of very old houses in the village. People built many of the houses on the High Street in the 1600s or the 1700s, and now they often use the street to make historical films. The famous fantasy writer J.R.R. Tolkien visited Moreton, too. In Tolkien’s book The Lord of the Rings there is a town called Bree, and a lot of it is like Moreton. So why did they make the film The Lord of the Rings in New Zealand, and not in Moreton? Probably because of the terrible English weather! There is a library and lots of tourist shops in Moreton, but there aren’t many places for young people to go. For me that’s OK because we’re only 27 kilometres from Stratford-upon-Avon. I can also get to London in two hours by train. My friends all live near me, so I like going to their houses or meeting in a café. I really love walking in the country around Moreton too, because it’s so beautiful. Moreton is a great place to live, and I don’t want to move anywhere different. Five years ago, my family left the big city of Leeds and moved to a small village1 called Moreton-in-Marsh. We first arrived in the summer, and everything was so pretty. I took lots of photos! Tourists visit Moreton-in-Marsh, or Moreton, as we call it, because there are lots of very old houses in the village. People built many of the houses on the High Street in the

TOWN

and

countrySome young people can’t stand living in small places, but others hate big cities. Two teenagers tell us about where they live.

I was born in a small village in Pakistan, but my family came to Birmingham when I was five years old. At first, my parents didn’t like Birmingham. They missed2 their country, and their family at home. Birmingham was big and noisy3. There was traffic on the street day and night, and they didn’t sleep very well. But now they like living here. And I don’t mind

hearing the cars outside. In fact, when I went back to the family village in Pakistan on

holiday I didn’t like being in a really quiet4 place. There was nothing to do there, and nowhere to go.

In Birmingham, our house is behind a market, in the city centre. Birmingham is a great city because there is so much to do here. There are great cafés, shops, cinemas and theatres everywhere – and many of them are very close to us. There’s a sports centre opposite us too, and I love going there for a swim with my friends after school. Birmingham is home to Aston Villa Football club, and Edgbaston cricket ground. My dad and I watched England and Pakistan play there last week. It was a really exciting match, but I didn’t know who to cheer for – England or Pakistan!
